Taxonomy and New Records of Graphidaceae Lichens in Western Pangasinan, Northern Philippines

Fajardo1, 2* and Paulina A. Bawingan1 Abstract There are limited studies on the diversity of Philippine lichenized fungi. This study collected and determined corticolous Graphidaceae from 38 collection sites in 10 municipalities of western Pangasinan province. The study found 35 Graphidaceae species belonging to 11 genera. Graphis is the dominant genus with 19 species. Other species belong to the genera Allographa (3 species) Fissurina (3), Phaeographis (3), while Austrotrema, Chapsa, Diorygma, Dyplolabia, Glyphis, Ocellularia, and Thelotrema had one species each. This taxonomic survey added 14 new records of Graphidaceae to the flora of western Pangasinan. Botânica, Biológicas, Universidade Federal do Paraná Cx. P. 19031, 81531-970, Curitiba, PR – Brazil Abstract – Phaeographis flavescens and Thalloloma pontalense are described as new species. These species were found growing in restinga in Southern Brazil. Key words – lichenized fungi, lichens, Ostropales, Paraná Introduction The family Graphidaceae Dumort. contains about 1000 species and is an important component of the lichen biota in tropical and subtropical regions (Staiger et al. 2006). During a survey of Graphidaceae in Paraná State, Southern Brazil, one new species of Phaeographis and one new species of Thalloloma, both with stictic acid, were encountered. Phaeographis Müll. Arg. is a genus characterized by brown ascospores reacting I+ wine-red, generally inspersed hymenia, poorly developed and uncarbonized excipula and lirellae with exposed discs (Staiger 2002, Archer 2006, Cáceres 2007, Lücking & Rivas-Plata 2008). Thalloloma Trevis. is characterized mainly by the ecorticate thallus and lirellae with brown or red exposed discs, hyaline ascospores reacting I+ violet, uncarbonized excipula and clear hymenia (Staiger 2002, Archer 2006, Cáceres 2007, Lücking & Rivas-Plata 2008). The new species are described and illustrated below. Materials and methods The new species were described from specimens collected in a typical Brazilian coastal vegetation forest, known as restinga, in Paraná State, Southern Brazil. New species and new records of American lichenicolous fungi. – Herzogia 16: 41–90. A total of 153 species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from America. Five species are described as new: Abrothallus pezizicola (on Cladonia peziziformis, USA), Lichenodiplis dendrographae (on Dendrographa, USA), Muellerella lecanactidis (on Lecanactis, USA), Stigmidium pseudopeltideae (on Peltigera, Europe and USA) and Tremella lethariae (on Letharia vulpina, Canada and USA). Six new combinations are proposed: Carbonea aggregantula (= Lecidea aggregantula), Lichenodiplis fallaciosa (= Laeviomyces fallaciosus), L. lecanoricola (= Laeviomyces lecanoricola), L. opegraphae (= Laeviomyces opegraphae), L. pertusariicola (= Spilomium pertusariicola, Laeviomyces pertusariicola) and Phacopsis fusca (= Phacopsis oxyspora var. fusca). The genus Laeviomyces is considered to be a synonym of Lichenodiplis, and a key to all known species of Lichenodiplis and Minutoexcipula is given. The genus Xenonectriella is regarded as monotypic, and all species except the type are provisionally kept in Pronectria. A study of the apothecial pigments does not support the distinction of Nesolechia and Phacopsis. The following 29 species are new for America: Abrothallus suecicus, Arthonia farinacea, Arthophacopsis parmeliarum, Carbonea supersparsa, Coniambigua phaeographidis, Diplolaeviopsis -

The genus Japewiella is reported for the first time in India and is represented by J. tavaresiana (H. Magn.) Printzen. Furthermore, the following six taxa including one variety are new to India viz. Arthonia atra (Pers.) A. Schneid., Graphis brevicarpa M. Nakan., Kashiw. & K.H. Moon, Micarea erratica (Körb.) Hertel, Rambold & Pietschm., Pertusaria cicatricosa var. deficiens A.W. Archer, Elix & Streimam, Porina subargillacea Müll Arg., and Pyxine schmidtii Vain. Brief accounts for all the new records to India are provided to facilitate their identification. Arthonia redingeri Grube and Lepraria caesiella R.C. Harris are reported for the first time from south India. IAL President Since the inaugural IAL meeting in Münster in March 1986, our society has had tremendously successful and enjoyable meetings. I still remember the first meeting when, for the first time, I met a number of prestigious colleagues and – as an The 8 undergraduate student – could interact with colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere. These meetings are especially vital for th students and early career scientists where they can interact – Lichens in Deep Time IAL Symposium with colleagues and build networks. Older scientists, like myself, can pass on essential guidance to younger scholars, while at the same time also learn from their new and bright ideas. We are confident that this 8th Symposium in Helsinki will be equally as memorable as the previous ones. Helsinki has a rich history and tradition in lichenological research and we are looking forward to this event, entitled ”Lichens in Deep Time”. Contributions to the symposium will reflect the latest trends in using genomic data to better understand the lichen symbiosis and the evolutionary history of its partners, have a strong part in ecological studies, address the threats imposed by rapid man-made changes occurring to the biosphere and an ever-growing interest in tropical lichens.
