MEADES Phd Thesis PLAYING AGAINST THE GRAIN RHETORICS OF COUNTERPLAY IN CONSOLE BASED FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER VIDEOGAMES A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Alan Frederick Meades School of Arts, Brunel University February 2013 1 ABSTRACT Counterplay is a way of playing digital games that opposes the encoded algorithms that define their appropriate use and interaction. Counterplay is often manifested within the social arena as practices such as the creation of incendiary user generated content, grief-play, cheating, glitching, modding, and hacking. It is deemed damaging to normative play values, to the experience of play, and detrimental to the viability of videogames as mainstream entertainment products. Counterplay is often framed through the rhetoric of transgression as pathogen, as a hostile, infectious, threatening act. Those found conducting it are subject to a range of punishments ranging from expulsion from videogames to criminal conviction. Despite the steps taken to manage counterplay, it occurs frequently within contemporary videogames causing significant disruption to play and necessitating costly remedy. This thesis argues that counterplay should be understood as a practice with its own pleasures and justifying rhetorics that problematise the rhetoric of pathogen and attenuate the threat of penalty. Despite the social and economic significance of counterplay upon contemporary videogames, relatively little is known of the practices conducted by counterplayers, their motivations, or the rhetorics that they deploy to justify and contextualise their actions. Through the use of ethnographic approaches, including interview and participant observation, alongside the identification and application of five popular rhetorics of transgression, this study aims to expose the meanings and complexities of contemporary counterplay. It examines counterplayer testimonies that articulate the practices and rhetorics underpinning the creation of incendiary user generated content, grief play, glitching, modding, and hacking on the Xbox 360 platform in particular. This study represents a contribution to the field of game studies in an area so far under- researched, offering voice to a previously silent demographic, that of counterplayers. In focussing upon their practices, communities and motivations, this study challenges the framing of counterplay as reductively oppositional or hostile. Instead, counterplay is shown to be an act of seduction, a means of articulating identity, status and recognition, as an expression of hacker ideology, and as a re-engagement with the carnivalesque.     Asheron’s Call: Redefining The Role Of Player Killing Vasiliy Zhulin STS 145: History of Computer Game Design Professor Henry Lowood March 18, 2003 In the past few years, a new genre of gaming matured for the mass market – the genre of Massively-Multiplayer-Online-Games (MMOGs). Games like Ultima Online, Everquest, Asheron’s Call, and the others that followed blurred the line between gaming and reality. No longer could the player save his progress at any stage, shut down the game, and return to it later to find it in the same state. The virtual worlds of these MMOGs were persistent – life moved on even if some players were offline. Virtual societies developed, complete with their own politics and history. The designers simply provided some basic rules and framework, and the players themselves did the rest by “living” their virtual lives. One of the pieces of framework provided in MMOGs is the ability to fight other human characters, as opposed to just non-player monsters. Player vs. Player combat (hereafter referred to as PvP combat), or more commonly known as player killing, allows players to battle the toughest opponents in any game – humans themselves. Unfortunately, in the first two MMOGs, Ultima Online and Everquest, the idea of PvP combat was not balanced to satisfy the majority of the players. In Ultima Online, player killers (hereafter referred to as PKs) actually ravaged peaceful players and, after killing them, looted the players’ items from their corpses. Many customers were furious! ALON CONFINO Germany, International Justice and the 20th Century The turning of the millennium has predictably spurred fresh interest in reinterpreting the 20th century as a whole. Recent years have witnessed a bountiful crop of academic surveys, mass market picture books and television programs devoted to recalling the deeds and misdeeds of the last one hundred years. It then comes as no surprise that Germany often figures prominently in these new accounts. If nothing else, its responsibility for World War I, World War II and the Holocaust assures its villainous presence in most every retrospective on offer. That Germany alone experienced all of the modern forms of government in one compressed century – from constitutional monarchy, democratic socialism, fascism, Western liberalism to Soviet-style communism -- has also made it a favorite object lesson about the so-called Age of Extremes. Moreover, the enduring international influence of Weimar culture, feminism and the women’s movement, social democracy, post-1945 economic recovery, West German liberalism, environmental politics and most recently pacifism have also occasioned serious reconsideration of the contemporary relevance of the 20th century German past. Eirik Jungar Uppsala University Abstract Streaming video games, that is, live broadcasting playing video games on the internet, is incredibly popular. Millions tune into twitch.tv daily to watch eSport tournaments, their favourite streamer, and chat with other viewers. But all is not rosy in the world of streaming games. Recently, some game developers have aggressively exercised their copyright to, firstly, claim part of the streamers’ revenue, and secondly, control the context in which their game is shown. The article analyzes whether game developers have, and should have, such rights under EU copyright law. Reaching the conclusion that video game streams infringe the game developer’s right to communicate their works to the public, I argue that freedom of expression can and should be used to rein in their rights in certain cases. Subjecting the lawfulness of streams to game developers’ good will risks stifling the expressions of streamers. The streamers, their audience, and even the copyright holders, would be worse off for it.     WORLDBUILDING INSIDE A BOX: EUROPA UNIVERSALIS IV AS A CATALYST FOR WORLDBUILDING JAYHANT SAULOG School of Design and Informatics Abertay University (May 2018) ABSTRACT Worldbuilding (the practice of creating fictional worlds) faces a unique challenge due to video games’ interactive nature, especially regarding sandbox games and non-linear narratives: how does one build a world in a genre so inherently pervasive? Where the player can be anyone and travel anywhere at any time? Where the game is less driven by the main story (or even lacking it completely), and instead leaves the world and setting to stand on its own? However, with the right platform, the pervasive nature of the sandbox genre can act as a catalyst to work to the worldbuilder’s advantage. When the platform asks questions, the worldbuilder is called to answer, and from this a development loop occurs resulting in a fleshed-out world that truly works in cooperation with the game. The research will seek to uncover the effectiveness of using the sandbox-strategy game Europa Universalis IV as a catalyst in the creation of a fantasy setting. The practical-led research will be twofold: the development of a game mod and the development of the world it will be set in. In addition to the main case study above, the research will look at existing literature on worldbuilding as well as a comparative approach on how other successful games have worldbuilt their settings.
