Excerpt from ERAGON Book One in the Inheritance cycle by Christopher Paolini DISCOVERY ragon knelt in a bed of trampled reed grass and scanned the Etracks with a practiced eye. The prints told him that the deer had been in the meadow only a half-hour before. Soon they would bed down. His target, a small doe with a pronounced limp in her left forefoot, was still with the herd. He was amazed she had made it so far without a wolf or bear catching her. The sky was clear and dark, and a slight breeze stirred the air. A silvery cloud drifted over the mountains that surrounded him, its edges glowing with ruddy light cast from the harvest moon cradled between two peaks. Streams flowed down the mountains from stolid glaciers and glistening snowpacks. A brooding mist crept along the valley’s floor, almost thick enough to obscure his feet. Eragon was fifteen, less than a year from manhood. Dark eye- brows rested above his intense brown eyes. His clothes were worn from work. A hunting knife with a bone handle was sheathed at his belt, and a buckskin tube protected his yew bow from the mist. He carried a wood-frame pack. The deer had led him deep into the Spine, a range of untamed mountains that extended up and down the land of Alagaësia. Strange tales and men often came from those mountains, usually boding ill. Despite that, Eragon did not fear the Spine—he was the only hunter near Carvahall who dared track game deep into its craggy recesses.

Kata Kunci: Fantasi, Karya Sastra Populer, Convention, Invention, Archetypes, Formula Introduction Nowadays, many people regard literary work as their way to have a relaxation, either high literature or popular literature. High literature refers to literary works that can only be criticized by people who have a good understanding on literary works. Meanwhile, literary work can be regarded as popular literature when it gains a good appreciation from the society. Then, the question is, can we use the same method in analyzing those two kinds of literatures? In this case, this study will analyze one of popular literature by figuring out the formula that constructs it. Formula literature is a kind of literary art. Therefore, it can be analyzed and evaluated like any other kind of literature. There are two central aspects of formulaic structures, their essential standardization and their primarily relation to the needs of escape and relaxation. Standardization, in important ways, is the essence of all literature. Standard conventions establish a common ground between writers and audiences. Without at least some form of standardization, artistic communication would not be possible.

About Christopher Paolini Christopher Paolini was born on November 17, 1983 in Southern California. He has lived most of his life in Paradise Valley, Montana with his parents and younger sister, Angela. The tall, jagged Beartooth Mountains rise on one side of Paradise Valley. Snowcapped most of the year, they inspired the fantastic scenery in Eragon. Christopher was homeschooled by his parents. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely. Some of his favorite books were Bruce Coville's Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, Frank Herbert's Dune, and Raymond E. Feist's Magician, as well as books by Anne McCaffrey, Jane Yolen, Brian Jacques, E.R. Eddison, David Eddings, and Ursula K. Le Guin. The idea of Eragon began as the daydreams of a teen. Christopher’s love for the magic of stories led him to craft a novel that he would enjoy reading. The project began as a hobby, a personal challenge; he never intended it to be published. All the characters in Eragon are from Christopher's imagination except Angela the herbalist, who is loosely based on his sister. Christopher was fifteen when he wrote the first draft of Eragon. He took a second year to revise the book, and then gave it to his parents to read. The family decided to self-publish the book and spent a third year preparing the manuscript for publication: copyediting, proofreading, designing a cover, typesetting the manuscript, and creating marketing materials. During this time Christopher drew the map for Eragon, as well as the dragon eye for the book cover (which now appears inside the Knopf hardcover edition).

The Depictions of Dragons in Paolini’s Eragon Peerawat Nonthaphodej Student, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok, 10100 Corresponding author: Tel: 095-737-1046 E-mail address: [email protected] Abstract This paper focused on the characteristics and depictions of dragons in Christopher Paolini’s Eragon (2002) in order to understand the roles that dragons play in human culture and how human culture changes the ways in which dragons are depicted. Said’s theory of oriental representation was used as theoretical framework in this study. The analysis revealed that Paolini’s dragons were unique and different from the past dragons. Paolini humanized his dragons by giving them more regal appearances, diverse colors, higher intelligences and superior morality, all of which were not seen in past depictions of dragons which focused more on their animalistic and reptilian natures. The role of dragons was also changed from the past depictions which painted dragons as evil antagonists or side characters. Paolini instead introduced many of his dragons as both main and supporting characters as well as a deuteragonist character. Furthermore, Paolini’s dragons were the driving force behind the plot conflict, contrary to the past depictions which saw dragons as only an object to be killed. In addition, unlike the depiction in the past which dragons were employed to present negative aspects of human nature, Paolini’s dragons were the metaphors of various real-life historical events and the real human society. Lastly, the dragon depiction in the story suggested that different races could live together in harmony.
