Introduction The Irish language has had a role in broadcasting since the establishment of Ireland’s first radio station 2RN in 1926. The founders of the state imagined that radio would play a key role in the development of Irish identity in nation-building (Watson, 2003; Pine, 2002; Day, 2012). Following the consolidation of the existing Dublin and Cork stations in 1933, a national audience could hear programmes in Irish for the first time, due to the introduction of a high-powered transmitter in Athlone. Although a separate service was promised for the Gaeltacht in 1926, a distinct station did not materialise until 1972, with the establishment of Raidió na Gaeltachta (Day, 2012). Some Irish is broadcast on RTÉ’s other radio stations but as a full-time national broadcaster, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta provides the majority of Irish language radio broadcasts in the country. Following the introduction of the Radio and Television Act of 1988, the pirate stations that had proliferated during the 1970s and 1980s were put off the air and new commercial broadcasters were licensed. Irish was granted only limited recognition in the schedules of these stations that came on air from 1989 onwards. As a result of a campaign by language activists in Dublin, Raidió na Life was established in 1993 as a community of interest service to serve Irish speakers in the capital (Ó Drisceoil, 2007). -

DETERMINATION OF MERGER NOTIFICATION M/06/067 – CONNACHT TRIBUNE/GALWAY BAY FM Section 21 of the Competition Act 2002 Proposed acquisition by of Connacht Tribune Limited of the issued share capital in Western Community Broadcasting Services Limited Dated 24/10/06 Introduction 1. On 25 September 2006, the Competition Authority (“the Authority”), in accordance with Section 18 (1) of the Competition Act, 2002 (“the Act”) was notified, on a mandatory basis, of a proposal whereby the Connacht Tribune Limited (“CT”) would acquire 73.27% of the remaining issued share capital in Western Community Broadcasting Services Limited trading as Galway Bay FM (“Galway Bay FM”) (“the proposed transaction”). 2. The Authority forwarded a copy of the notification to the Minister and notified the undertakings involved that it considers the acquisition to be a media merger, in accordance with section 23(1) of the Act. 3. The proposed transaction is also subject to the grant of regulatory consent from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (“BCI”). The Authority was informed by CT and Galway Bay FM that regulatory consent was granted for the sale of the remaining shares in Galway Bay FM not already owned by CT to CT on 21 June 2006 by the BCI, subject to several conditions imposed by the BCI, including clearance of the proposed transaction by the Authority. An Open Letter to Galway City Council Let’s Change Our Streets and make walking and cycling safer for all ages and abilities during the COVID-19 pandemic Brendan McGrath Chief Executive of Galway City Council City Hall, Galway Wednesday, 6 May 2020 Dear Mr McGrath, We are a broad city-wide alliance of residents, employers and community groups, led by Galway Cycling Campaign / Feachtas Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe. We live, work, trade and shop in Galway City. We would like to begin a conversation with our Council to Change Our Streets to reallocate space to people on foot and on bikes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all working to re-open our society. Protecting public health for people of all ages and abilities is our shared concern, especially for vulnerable people, cocooners, and those with disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most significant public health threat many of us will experience. We would like to express sympathy with those who have died of COVID-19, their families, friends, and colleagues. To all who are ill, we wish them a full and speedy recovery. This global health emergency has required us to change our behaviour in many new ways. People’s environments need to enable them to change their behaviours to adhere to social distancing in the months ahead. Urban design is critical to this. Choices that the City Council makes can encourage these new behaviours we need to adapt in order to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. As advocates for people on bikes, we would like to offer our insights on road safety and urban design. -
