L’anno sociale 2019-20 lo sarà sempre per l’Emergenza COVID-19, che ha decimato le nostre attività di service e fatto cancellare tutte le Conviviali Pasquali e tutte le Convention annuali. Dopo la Convention Straordinaria di Paestum, sono state cancellate anche la Convention Europea, quella del Kiwanis International e quella del nostro Di- stretto di inizio settembre. La pandemia da COVID-19 è stata devastante ma, fortunatamente, nessuno dei nostri soci è stato contagiato. Il KNEWS 4 è un numero speciale, essendo stati Marzo, Aprile e Maggio i mesi più difficili e terribili di questa pandemia che, oltre a stravolgere le nostre vite, ha cambiato il nostro approccio al Kiwanis: si sono modificati i modi di vedere i soci, di vivere la vita associativa ed anche il nostro modo di fare service. Abbiamo dovuto cancellare, così come in tutto il Distretto, le attività già programmate, sia per il rischio di contrarre il virus che per il lockdown. Non abbiamo potuto fare diversamente. Anche se le attività di service pubblicate in questo numero sembrerebbero esigue, tantissimi sono stati i gesti di solidarietà e generosità che ci hanno contraddistinto. Abbiamo reagito bene a questo difficile momento, affrontandolo con forza, coraggio e grande umanità. Lo abbiamo fatto a vari livelli, internazionale, distrettuale, divisionale e di club. A livello internazionale, grazie anche al grande impegno del nostro KI Trustee Elio Garozzo, abbiamo do- nato alla Caritas Diocesana ed al Banco Alimentale, tramite la Protezione Civile di Catania, ingenti aiuti umanitari provenienti dagli amici kiwaniani austriaci. Oltre ad avere compiuto un indescrivibile gesto di umanità, abbiamo dato al nostro Kiwanis grande visibilità e ricevuto il ringraziamento degli amministratori del Comune di Catania. Abbiamo aderito alla raccolta fondi Distrettuale - Emergenza Coronavirus: “Doniamo un respiro” -, testi- monial Valeria Marini, fortemente voluta dal nostro Governatore Maura Magni e realizzata con l’obiettivo di donare ventilatori e vari presidi sanitari agli ospedali di tutto il territorio nazionale. Nell’ambito della rac- colta fondi Distrettuale “Doniamo un respiro”, data la possibilità alle Divisioni di poter effettuare anche di- rettamente la raccolta, sia per abbreviare i tempi che per la migliore conoscenza delle esigenze degli ospe- dali locali, abbiamo condotto la raccolta fondi - Emergenza COVID-19 “Aiutiamo a respirare” -, grazie alla quale abbiamo donato un Ventilatore ed relativi accessori alla Rianimazione dell’Ospedale S. Marco di Ca- tania. Con questa donazione, oltre ad avere messo in evidenza la grande sensibilità e generosità dei kiwa- niani della Divisione e contribuito a salvare diverse vite umane, abbiamo voluto ringraziare tutto il persona- le medico di quella struttura per il continuo impegno nella lotta contro il virus. Inoltre, abbiamo ottenuto grande visibilità e migliorato i rapporti di collaborazione con l’Azienda Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele di Catania. Diversi sono stati i Clubs divisionali che hanno donato fondi a favore di associazioni, ospedali, enti e citta- dini indigenti. Questo è quanto abbiamo potuto realizzare e ringrazio tutti perchè nessun kiwaniano ha mai affrontato un anno sociale più difficile di questo. In questo difficile momento, il Governatore Maura Magni ha contribuito notevolmente a tenere unito il Di- stretto, con una serie di incontri online (“Aperitivi” virtuali, “Un tè con Peter Pan”, etc), che hanno contri- buito a farci conoscere meglio, a rafforzare il nostro entusiasmo, a motivarci e “gestire” insieme il cambia- mento, in una dimensione corale, l’unica in grado di consentirci di raggiungere gli obiettivi di questo anno sociale. 5 KNEWS N° 4 16 giugno 2020 Anche il Training Leadership Education del Governatore Eletto 2019-20, Angela Catalano, si è svolto online. Un grande successo sia per i trainer che per gli organizzatori. Anche questo ha contribuito a farci conoscere meglio, a migliorare il nostro rapporto, a darci coraggio, ad unire il Kiwanis. Non tutti i mali vengono per nuocere. Noi kiwaniani abbiamo dimostrato che sappiamo adeguarci ai tempi, che il Kiwanis c’è sempre e che con l’esperienza dei tanti collegamenti online di questi mesi, possibilmente modificheremo in futuro anche il nostro modo di incontrarci, vederci e fare service. Piano piano, adeguandoci alle varie fasi di apertura dettataci dal Governo Centrale, ripartiremo per concludere alla grande anche questo anno sociale “SUPERPOWER”. Probabilmente, anche nei prossimi mesi persisteranno le condizioni di emergenza COVID-19 e non arriverà presto la paventata apertura definitiva, in particolare nei mesi invernali. Noi resisteremo e continueremo ad adoperarci per salvare quante piu’ vite umane e ad aiutare quante più persone possi- bile. La pandemia non e solo virale ma anche sociale e, sotto questo aspetto, i prossimi mesi saranno ancora devastanti. Un anno sociale difficile per tutti. Se consideriamo che noi ci troviamo nell’impossibilità di comple- tare gli obbiettivi prefissati nel presente anno sociale, gli Officer eletti nell’impossibilità di realizzare le normali riunioni organizzative, l’esigenza di molti Clubs di confermare i propri direttivi e quindi la conseguenza per gli Officer distrettuali di collaborare o meno con i Presidenti con cui si era imposta- to un progetto, la cancellazione della Convention e la problematica di eleggere nuovi officer distret- tuali nella riunione di delegati di

Abstract: On December 24, 2018, the Etna volcano has recorded a significant eruption. Linked to this phenomenon, after a seismic swarm of 72 shocks, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck a large area North of Catania city, on the Eastern coast of Sicily. Six villages reported 28 injured people and damages to the building. According to seismologists the earthquake had an unusual level of magnitude. Yet, despite the real danger of this event, many people who live around the volcano, in one of the most densely populated areas of Sicily, perceived these facts in an ambivalent way. Indeed, their lives continued as before even in awareness of the natural hazard, while several media presented the situation as really dangerous in a worried tone. This paper, part of a wider research still in progress, aims to analyse the perception of the risk towards the biggest and highest volcano of Europe by the inhabitants of some villages that rise around the Etna. Based on a previous research conducted in 2013 in the same area, this study compares the ways in which this recent earthquake was perceived by some residents in the area and the ways in which some online newspaper narrated the event.

    The volcanic hazards of Mount Etna Living in the shadow of Italy's volcanoes Throughout Etna’s history, nearby towns and cities have been threatened by ash falls, lava flows and earthquakes. Figure 1 shows a house destroyed by a recent lava flow on the flanks of the volcano. Roads, agricultural land and tourist facilities are regularly affected by eruptions and ash clouds can disrupt air travel. In 1669 half the city was destroyed by a lava flow. The city has also been periodically affected by ash clouds that blow over the city causing pollution and transport disruption, particularly affecting the international airport. At the time the population of the village was about 10,000. Many people’s homes were destroyed by the lava flow (Figure 3). With help from the military, there was an orderly evacuation of the town’s inhabitants and families were able to remove furniture and fittings from their houses. Evacuees were relocated to nearby towns staying with relatives, friends or in hired apartments.

This paper compares morphological and sedimentary characters of beach types occurring along the Ionian coastline of NE Sicily and local coastal uplift rates, with the aim of evaluating how vertical coastal movements influence beach morphologies. The Ionian coastline of NE Sicily may be divided into many coastal provinces and subprovinces, following the relative positions that each segment of littoral occupies within the general geological setting of the central Mediterranean. This coastline runs perpendicu- larly along the Africa-Europe plate boundary, crossing successions belonging to the chain, volcanic products, a foredeep and a fore- land sector. In this paper only the northern sector, pertaining to the chain and volcanic coastal provinces, is examined. From the south to the northern edge of NE Sicily, four main localities were chosen for examination: (i) Capo Peloro/Messina; (ii) Taormina/Giardini-Naxos; (iii) Riposto/Praiola; (iv) Ognina/Catania. In these sites, a series of combined observations on the gradient of the nearshore profile, grain size of sediments, local water dyna- mics, and uplift rates identified classes of distinct beach types and models.
