  • Structure and Proportion in Hindustani Ālāp
Structure and Proportion in Hindustani Ālāp. JOHN NAPIER[1] University Of New South Wales ABSTRACT: In this paper, I investigate structural proportions in improvised Hindustani (North Indian) vocal music. 235 examples of two types of ālāp were examined: 175 in the genre of khayāl, 60 in the genre of dhrupad. Both studio recordings and recordings of concerts were used. Three sets of proportions were investigated: the climactic arrival at the upper tonic as a proportion of the time till a point of structural change that is made explicit through rhythmic intensification (C:R), the first point as a proportion of the whole (C:W), and point of rhythmic intensification as a proportion of the whole (R:W). Average proportions for each genre, and the degree of consistency-flexibility within each genre were measured. The results show that proportions may vary between genres, but that flexibility- consistency does not. The data obtained were also used to investigate proportions and consistency-flexibility amongst singers of similar stylistic training, across individual singers, and across different performances by the same singer. The conclusions are followed by suggestions for a further, emic-driven examination of proportionality. Submitted 2015 September 17; accepted 2017 March 17 KEYWORDS: proportion, improvisation, Hindustani music, North Indian music INTRODUCTION THIS paper examines comparability and consistency of proportions in the large-scale structures of Hindustani music. This investigation was prompted by two concerns. One is a tendency, often revealed casually in conversation, to think of improvised music in general, and in this instance Indian music in particular, as less structured than so-called ‘composed’ music, either as conceived in planning, or as perceived in evanescent performance and recorded artefact.

  • Gharana Festival of Indian Music (2010)
Gharana Festival of Indian Music (2010) About Gharana Festival 2010 The Gharana Festival of Indian Music a 3-day festival that takes place in Chennai celebrating and experiencing Hindustani Classical music. The festival intends to showcase this rich Indian classical genre with the goal of bringing something new to the music community of Chennai. This annual festival features stand-out performances by artists who are the true torchbearers of their respective fields, carrying forward the tradition of music. We at the Prakriti Foundation started the festival as a response to the success of the first edition in 2006, Dhrupad, which included distinguished and legendary musicians of this art form. The enthusiasm witnessed amongst the audience, in a city which is dominated by Carnatic classical music, made it possible to make Gharana an annual festival. The festival opens its doors to people all over the country and the world, inviting them to experience and get a taste of Hindustani classical music in Chennai. The best part being that it is non-ticketed and is open to all! The 2010 edition of this festival featured Pandit Indra Kishore Mishra, Pandit FalguniMitra and Pandit Arun Kumar Mishra presenting Bettiah Gharana. Founded in the seventeenth century, this genre of Gharana mainly flourished during the nineteenth century. It exercised great influence over Dhrupad in the entire eastern region. Schedule Dhrupad by Pandit Indra Kishore Mishra Synopsis: Bettiah Gharāna performance by Pandit Indra Kishore Mishra accompanied by Jayamala Mishra on vocals and Shri Apurvalal Manna on Pakhawaj. Date: 22nd January 2010 Time: 6:30 PM Venue: Chandra Mandala, Spaces Dhrupad by Pandit Falguni Mitra Synopsis: Bettiah Gharana performance by Pandit Falguni Mitra, disciple of Pandit Bholanath Pathakji of Varanasi accompanied by Mrs.

  • An Introduction to Dhrupad Performance Platforms of India Samarpita Chatterjee (Mukherjee)* & Sabyasachi Sarkhel
Etnomüzikoloji Dergisi Ethnomusicology Journal Yıl/Year: 3 • Sayı/Issue: 2 (2020) An Introduction to Dhrupad Performance Platforms of India Samarpita Chatterjee (Mukherjee)* & Sabyasachi Sarkhel Abstract Dhrupad an ancient form of music was initially performed in the Hindu temples. Later on, Dhrupad musicians were patronized in the royal courts by the Rajputs and Mughals. With time, Dhrupad started disappearing in society during the early part of the 20th century due to the increased popu- larity of other forms of music and loss of royal patronage. Dhrupad became absent in music concerts, and Kheyal music started dominating music con- certs. Collective efforts of many people, musicians, organizations, and pat- rons initiated the Dhrupad concerts in Jaipur and Varanasi, as a step for the revival of Dhrupad in the 1970s. Before this time the All India Radio also took initiatives towards the promotion of Dhrupad. Slowly other Dhrupad sammelans were arranged across India. There were few Dhrupad artists of Dagar Tradition with a high level of artistry, who were not intimidated by adversities and, with their persistence and dedication, continued to serve authentic Dhrupad music to audiences through music concerts, as a concert artist and music concert organizer. Afterward, artists from other Dhrupad traditions played similar roles; as a result, in the last few decades, there had been an explosion of Dhrupad festivals/concerts across India. These festi- vals are organized by societies/organizations/academies (government/pri- vate) under the leadership of eminent Dhrupad masters. This study deline- ates an account of the significant Dhrupad concerts across India and, based upon the present concert scenario, concludes that Dhrupad seems to have been able to get back to the Hindustani Classical music audience.

Wade, Chair In this dissertation, I examine notions of tradition and fidelity to tradition in Indian classical music by investigating the development of musical judgment, categorical knowledge and aesthetic sense in the performance of Dhrupad - a genre of Hindustani music with medieval origins. Focusing on two contemporary performers of Dhrupad with very different histories of listening and practice, I show that categorical knowledge and strong notions of fidelity to tradition arise directly from the deeply dialogic and inter-subjective processes through which individual musicians develop and stabilize coherent aesthetic response to handed-down musical materials in situated practice. Specifically, I argue that strong notions of tradition and fidelity to tradition in Indian classical music are irreducible to a discussion of the disciplinary technologies of colonialism and cultural nationalism. Rather, I propose that tradition in Indian classical music has to be understood in dialogic relationship with intelligibility and individual musical judgment.
