Ms. Hall wore a Renaissance dress and addressed everyone with an accent. I even dressed up as a pirate for the occasion. We were going to the Renaissance Festival, a place we were all excited to see once again. Students discussed whom they were going to spend the day with. We all lined up to enter three buses and the long excitement began to build as the hour and half ride continued. Once we all arrived, students grabbed their tickets and ran inside, where the buildings were designed for the medieval era it was trying to represent. The smells of cooked meat floated in the air, attracting very hungry visitors. Long lines began to form as people ordered turkey legs, the main attraction there, food wise. Soon, the heat became unbearable and the accessibility of both slushies and fans were heaven sent. Small shops were everywhere, selling from hand-made pots and cups to corsets. The shop owners stayed in character as they discussed what they were selling. From peasants to pirates, they all genuinely played their characters well. Plays were performed at the two theaters as people began to circle them, wanting to see what silly things the performers would do. Soon, everything came to an end at 3 o’clock, and everyone retreated into the buses and returned to school. Students discussed what they did and saw as the hour and half ride took its course. Traveling back in time made it an exciting day and the photos here depict some of what took place. Happy Viewing! Halina Gąsiorowska University of Social Sciences and Humanities & University of Warsaw Warsaw, Poland [email protected] HOMELESS BLOGS AS TRAVELOGUES. TRAVEL AS A STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITION AND EMPLACEMENT Recommended Citation Gąsiorowska, Halina. “Homeless Blogs as Travelogues. Travel as A Struggle for Recognition and Emplacement”. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 3.1 (2017): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2017.3.01 Abstract: Applying Clifford’s broad concept of travel, I discuss American homeless blogs as autobiographical travel writing serving the struggle for recognition of the street people. The analysed travelogues are hitchhiker Ruth Rader’s Ruthie in the Sky blog and self-made woman Brianna Karp’s Girl’s Guide to Homelessness – a memoir published on the basis of the blog bearing the same title. In the travelogues I analyse the characteristic features of a personal travel writing: travel of the self, advice for future travellers, geographic information and portrayal of society in which the travel is undertaken. I claim that homeless bloggers recounting their stories of otherness and displacement in the US contribute to (re)constructing American cultural identity their personal Self, just like many other American travellers before. Additionally, homeless blogging about homelessness is shown as the process of emplacement (Casey) – the bloggers’ attempt of making themselves at home in the world. Key words: homeless blog, autobiographical travelogue, struggle for recognition, emplacement tramp, self-made (wo)man Homeless blogs – the personal blogs written by the homeless about their experiences of homelessness – started to appear as early as in the 1990s, but it was not before the economic crises of 2007 when the bloggers became media sensations in 5 METACRITIC JOURNAL FOR COMPARATIVE STUDIES AND THEORY 3.1 the US.

"teen mom" tv shows & stigma around young parents Creators of reality shows such as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant say they are intended to prevent young pregnancy and parenting, but their greatest effect may be to increase stigma on pregnant and parenting youth. MTV’s hit reality shows 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom were produced with an agenda of preventing teen pregnancy by displaying a carefully constructed image of early-age parenting. Analyses of this media have found that the structure and content of the series minimize social inequities that often underlie young parenting. The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications THE “NEW TEEN MOMISM”: 16 AND PREGNANT AND THE NEW “TEEN MOM” IDENTITY A Thesis in Media Studies by Jacqueline N. Dunfee © 2012 Jacqueline N. Dunfee Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts August 2012 ii The thesis of Jacqueline N. Dunfee was reviewed and approved* by the following: Michelle Rodino-Colocino Assistant Professor of Communications Thesis Advisor Matthew McAllister Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean of Graduate Education College of Communications *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Teenage pregnancy in the U.S. has been represented in popular culture in quite contradictory ways: as a serious social problem and an enviable, even glamorous youth identity. One important case in point is the television franchise 16 and Pregnant, a show that, together with its spin-off series, demonize and glamorize teen pregnancy. Above all else, 16 and Pregnant produces the spectacle of the pregnant teen as a new identity for reality television. The purpose of this thesis is to show how the content of the series 16 and Pregnant reflects and array of historical, cultural, and political-economic factors. I adopt a feminist perspective in my political-economic and textual analysis of the show and related media. The following analysis draws on Douglas and Michaels’ (2004) conception of “new momism” and Murphy’s (2012) conception of “teen momism” and applies these terms to 16 and Pregnant to explain how teen moms are constructed as both morally reprehensible yet also desirable figures that echo neoliberal and postfeminist ideologies.
