Dieses einzigartige, küstenfreie Land mag zwar eines der kleinsten 17 Europas sein, doch es hat dem furchtlosen Touristen einiges zu bieten: von 18 Partisanenkämpfen über Umweltverschmutzung hin zu rituellen Massenbe- 19 säufnissen. Großartige Landschaften, prachtvolle Architektur, jahrhundertealte 20 Hochkultur wird die Besucherin dort zwar vergeblich suchen – dafür aber beim 21 Eintauchen ins molwansche Universum garantiert alle Stereotype finden, die es 22 über Osteuropa gibt. Das sind viele, und die meisten davon nicht besonders 23 schmeichelhaft. 24 Zu Beginn der 2000er Jahre kam ein Reiseführer in die Buchläden, der seiner 25 Leserschaft eine unvergessliche Reise ins Land des schadhaften Lächelns ver- 26 sprach.1 Mit Molwanen wurde dem armchair traveller ein fiktives, aber doch 27 klar erkennbares Osteuropa in bestem Touristenlatein als ironische Dystopie 28 einer Urlaubsdestination präsentiert. Das Buch wurde ein durchschlagender 29 Erfolg. Später folgten weitere Bände über ähnlich unattraktive Destinationen, 30 etwa eine mittelamerikanische Bananenrepublik oder ein zweifelhaftes ost- 31 asiatisches Badeparadies. 32 Nicht zufällig erkor das erste Buch aber ausgerechnet Osteuropa zum tou- 33 ristischen Anti-Ort. Wenn auch in konsequent überdrehter und dadurch als 34 Satire kenntlicher Form, reproduziert Molwanen einen zugespitzten „westli- 35 chen“ Blick auf den östlichen Teildes Kontinents. Es ist nur eines von zahlreichen 36 popkulturellen Formaten, das in den letzten Jahren die ehemals sowjetische 37 Einflusssphäre aufs Korn genommen hat (man denke nur an „Borats“ Kasach- 38 stan-Parodie) und damit viel ältere Stereotype über das östliche Europa wei- 39 40 1 Cilauro, Santo / Gleisner, Tom / Sitch, Rob: Molwanen.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ILIAUNI Open Journal Systems (Ilia State University, Tbilisi) Ghia Nodia Components of the Georgian National Idea: an Outline Since the 1980s, theoretical literature on nationalism has abounded, its most influential stars including Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson, An- thony Smith and Rogers Brubaker. The main thrust has been to problema- tize the concept of nation as most people have tended to perceive it since the 19th century. To reject, that is, the romanticized idea of a nation as an age- old, pre-given entity one is supposed to speak of with awe. The new scholars of nations and nationalism disdain these approaches as “primoridialist” and “essentialist” - which, for them, is synonymous with unprofessionalism and inadequacy. On the other hand, most of Georgian intellectual tradition, in- asmuch as it is preoccupied with the concept of the Georgian nation, takes the essentialist-primordialist approach for granted - even when authors dis- play sharply critical attitudes towards different aspects of Georgian social or political realities. Georgian sociologists who teach contemporary theories of nationalism rarely apply them to Georgian material.1 The latter attempts are rare and mostly belong to foreign scholars.2 The aim of this article is to propose a tentative trajectory of the evolu- tion of the idea of the modern Georgian nation. I will not go into theoretical debates on nationalism but start by briefly summarizing my general approach towards the problem. Then I will proceed with a general description of two major components of the Georgian national idea: identity-building on the one hand, and the Georgian nation as a political project.

    Zaal Andronikashvili The Glory of Feebleness The Martyrological Paradigm in Georgian Political Theology For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. (Matthew 6:13) Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. (1 Chronicles 29:11) A monument to Saint Georgia was erected on Freedom Square in Tbilisi on 23 November 2006. The unveiling of this monument on Tbilisi’s central square, which differing times bore the names Paskevich-Yerevanskij1 and Lenin Square, among others, was a symbolic step. In modern political mythology Saint George, who replaced Paskevich and Lenin (the Russian and Soviet imperial representatives), is not only Georgia’s guardian saint but an allegory of Georgia who, in this mythological narrative, fights against the dragon personifying the imperial legacy and the enemy of freedom. How- ever, the symbolism of the monument does not celebrate a victory over evil, but makes a promise of a future victory. In the fight against evil he brings an eschatological idea to modern political contexts and vice versa (he proj- ects modern political contexts onto eschatology). In spite of the secular in- terpretation, Saint George’s monument represents a variation on the basic paradigm of Georgian political theology. In my article I shall speak on this very paradigm. Georgian historiography has recently become interested in political theology.2 The comparative political theology of eastern Christendom is al- most unresearched.3 For this reason I am unable in the present article to dis- cuss this issue exhaustively.

It is im- possible to speak of the formation of Georgia as a nation state without dis- cussing these. A reading of modern Georgian history from this angle should assist us in answering many still unanswered questions, to the extent that current political development is directly linked to that historical process which began in the nineteenth century, the aim of which was the formation of a new Georgian national and state self-awareness. In the present paper, it is particularly through the prism of secularization that we will discuss the history of the establishment of the Georgian state. Let us first of all recall several significant moments in recent Georgian political history which, in our view, are directly linked to a complex of themes at whose poles we may place secularization and counter-secularization. On 11 October, 2007, the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, an- nounced a political initiative which was supported by a large portion of the population and by the majority of opposition parties. In the Patriarch’s view, the restoration of the monarchy (the introduction of a constitutional monar- chy) would become a decisive factor in the restoration of territorial integrity and in national integration. The Patriarch’s initiative might have appeared as a chance occurrence in Georgian political discourse had it not been one of a series of political articulations. This series superficially demonstrates a con- frontation between the authorities, the opposition and society, and hints at a profound unity on the level of the mechanism of political thinking.

This shows that the diasporas cannot communicate with their historical homeland at the state level. At the same time, the expected state structure of postwar Iraq may greatly affect the life of the Kurdish and Assyrian communities in Georgia that share some of the problems with other ethnic minorities and have specific concerns of their own. There are indications that these communities have stepped up their activeness partly in response to the Georgian domestic problems and partly because of the coming geopolitical changes in the Middle East. The Southern Caucasus has been serving as home to the majority of the Kurds and Assyrians since the early 20th century when their ancestors fled Turkey. Today their diasporas may gain more weight in the context of possible geopolitical changes that are expected soon. Survey of History Assyrians in Georgia were first mentioned in the 6th century A.D. It was at that time that 13 Assyrian monks from the city of Urhai (Edessa, Mesopotamia) came to Georgia.
