Page 22 Riding The Range • Spring 2009 ast fall the ARHA Charters were asked to nominate a member that they would be like to be considered for the honor of ARHA Member of the Year. The Association L memo stated that “there are so many members deserving this award,” and asked that each charter help with narrowing down the pool to assist in the decision-making for the final choice. The dilemma of choosing one member from each charter may have been equally difficult, but the Missouri club felt that they had one member who had clearly given of her time and talents, in a very selfless manner, and deserved recognition for all of her efforts. This member is Shannon McInerney.

The nomination for Shannon included a quote from a St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper article, dated September 14, 1993. The reporter wrote “Her power to persuade people to do things with her mixture of gabbiness and gaiety and purpose is approaching folk legend…” Shannon’s involvement with MoRHA and the ARHA began in 2005, and clearly this folk legend has continued. Shannon exhibits an unyielding commitment to both the ARHA and the Missouri Charter. Her energy, creativity and resourceful- ness have garnered many valuable resources for the club and its members. She has never requested any recognition or reimburse- ment for her efforts. At the 2008 MoRHA Awards Banquet, Shan- non prepared awards for the Board Members and other volunteers to recognize their efforts, but remained in the background as far as President Randy Cope presents Shannon McInerney with the personal recognition was concerned. 2008 ARHA Member Of The Year Award.

Shannon’s contributions to the horse world include years of love for horses, trail riding, and showing. She also founded and ran a not-for-profit organization, Second Career Thoroughbreds, where the racehorse and foundation community were also the recipi- ents of Shannon’s commitment to the equine industry. She operated this organization for nearly ten years finding good and lasting homes for many horses leaving the racetrack.

Shannon’s horse, Sugar Bear Coconut (aka “Lacy”), a gorgeous palomino, brought her to the ranch horse world. The Missouri Charter is forever grateful to Lacy for this. Shannon’s efforts have brought MoRHA countless corporate sponsors, provided give- aways for exhibitors at the Missouri shows, and have brought all-expense paid weekend trail rides used as club fund raisers. She writes the club newsletter, gets it published in a regional magazine, and maintains the website. She has also become the unofficial club photographer, which has benefited everyone. ###

The ARHA sponsored another successful Convention and Annual Awards Banquet in February. For us, one of the highlights of the week was the amazing response to the Live and Silent Auctions, supporting the American Ranch Horse Youth Foundation, which is responsible for awarding yearly scholarships to ARHA youth members. Members responded to requests for donations for the Silent Auction with overwhelming generosity. ARHA Charters responded to requests for “State oriented gift baskets” with equal generosity.

The Live Auction was conducted by Jed Lawrence, who led a spirited competition for the items donated by the State Charters. The Live Auction was very successful and started the evening off with a great deal of fun. The high selling charter basket was donated by South Kentucky Ranch Horse Association and was purchased by Kent & Sina Kelley. The Silent Auction closed shortly afterward, and it too brought in substantial contributions. The ARHA members and guests attending the Convention and Banquet were extremely generous.

We would like to thank everyone who participated. This includes the members of the State Charters who organized and prepared the Charter Baskets; everyone who contributed items to the Silent Auction; and then to every- The Kelley’s purchase the high selling basket that was donated by South KY Ranch Horse Association. one who purchased these terrific items.

The results of the evening’s events provide a substantial and healthy endowment for the Youth Foundation and Scholarship Fund. Thanks again to all who participated. ###
