Chapter 1: Getting Ready for Egypt Egypt is a country in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge to Western Asia. Covering an area of about 1,001,450 square kilometers (386,660 sq mi), Egypt borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west. Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most famous monuments, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx. The southern city of Luxor contains numerous ancient artifacts, such as the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Egypt is widely regarded as an important political and cultural nation of the Middle East. Climate Egypt does not receive much rainfall except in the winter months. Temperatures average between 80 °F (27 °C) and 90 °F (32 °C) in summer, and up to 109 °F (43 °C) on the Red Sea coast. Temperatures average between 55 °F (13 °C) and 70 °F (21 °C) in winter. A steady wind from the northwest helps hold down the temperature near the Mediterranean coast. 5 Mansoura University Faculty of Medicine- International Students' Office The Students' Handbook. Chapter 2: Getting Ready for Mansoura city Mansoura means 'The Victorious (city)'. The city is named after the Egyptian victory over Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade. Mansoura lies on the east bank of Damietta branch of the Nile, in Delta region. Mansoura is about 120 km northeast of Cairo. Across from the city, on the opposite side of the Nile, is the town of Talkha. Mansoura and Talkha together form a metropolitan city. The Egyptian Arabic dialect spoken by Mansoura's population is a northern Egyptian Arabic dialect, with noticeable influences from the city's surrounding rural villages, each of which has contributed to the city's population over the years. There are some similarities to Alexandrian Egyptian Arabic in some aspects of pronunciation. Mansoura National Museum used to be Dar Ibn Lockman, the house where Louis IX was imprisoned in 1250 during the Seventh Crusade. The suits of mail and swords of the crusaders are displayed in the museum, as well as a collection of maps and huge paintings depict the Battle of Mansoura. Mansoura branch of the National Library was recently inaugurated as General Mansoura Library. Mansoura is famous for its architectural style, especially the Shinnawi Palace (A propriety for Mohamed Bek El-Shinnawi, a member of the Wafd Party). It was built by an Italian architect in 1928. The mosque of El-Saleh Ayoub El-Kebir is one of the most important places in Mansoura. It was built by a loyal servant of the Sultan and is located in Al-Sagha Street that separates "Old Mansoura" from the modern city. You can get out to: Gizirt El Ward Sports Club, Nile club, El Hawar club where the families and youth of Mansoura spend their weekends. Again, just ask. It is known to everyone. The clubs are only worth visiting to get a better understanding of the culture and fashions. 6 Mansoura University Faculty of Medicine- International Students' Office The Students' Handbook. Advice on Qualification Equivalencies 2018-2019 University of Cambridge – Graduate Admissions Office This document is advisory only and is designed to give Departments a guide for the minimum entry requirements for each country. It is worth noting that there can be great variation in the education systems between countries, and Departments should, as always, consider each application on the strength of the references and other supporting materials in addition to the academic qualification. The document has been compiled from a variety of sources including: UK NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom) www.naric.org.uk; The International Office; and views from individuals in several Faculties. Please note that this table lists the University’s minimum requirements. Departments and Degree Committees differ in how they regard qualifications, and may therefore require a higher grade or qualification than that specified below. An academic case will be considered with relevant supporting information for applicants who do not meet these guidelines. Comments and views from colleagues on this document are very welcome. Please contact Clare Impey at the Graduate Admissions Office if you wish to comment on or add to any advice – [email protected] . When requesting more information about a specific case, it is helpful if you can send copies of the applicant’s academic transcripts where possible. ****NOTE: Where multiple grading schemes are listed on one transcript, whichever requirement is the highest should be applied. A Report on the Mapping Study of Peace & Security Engagement in African Tertiary Institutions Written by Funmi E. Vogt This project was funded through the support of the Carnegie Corporation About the African Leadership Centre In July 2008, King’s College London through the Conflict, Security and Development group (CSDG), established the African Leadership Centre (ALC). In June 2010, the ALC was officially launched in Nairobi, Kenya, as a joint initiative of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. The ALC aims to build the next generation of scholars and analysts on peace, security and development. The idea of an African Leadership Centre was conceived to generate innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced on the African continent, by a new generation of “home‐grown” talent. The ALC provides mentoring to the next generation of African leaders and facilitates their participation in national, regional and international efforts to achieve transformative change in Africa, and is guided by the following principles: a) To foster African‐led ideas and processes of change b) To encourage diversity in terms of gender, region, class and beliefs c) To provide the right environment for independent thinking d) Recognition of youth agency e) Pursuit of excellence f) Integrity The African Leadership Centre mentors young Africans with the potential to lead innovative change in their communities, countries and across the continent. The Centre links academia and the real world of policy and practice, and aims to build a network of people who are committed to the issue of Peace and Security on the continent of Africa.
