  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • Theatrical Reviews Section
Theatrical Reviews Soft Power. Dir. Leigh Silverman. Play and lyrics by David Henry Hwang. Perf. Francis Jue, Conrad Ricamora, and Alyse Alan Louis. Center Theatre Group (Los Angeles), 2018. Imagine a future in which the United States is no longer a global superpower but, instead, China is, and the rest of the world comes to understand American culture through highly-visualized, -verbalized, and -physicalized gestures generated by Chinese musicals. Commissioned by Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group for their 50th anniversary season in 2018, David Henry Hwang’s Soft Power asked audiences to do just that, displacing those who are primarily used to, perhaps even unquestioningly comfortable with, the deep-seated stereotypes and assumptions that American popular culture continues to produce about Asia – if only for a few brief hours. In response to the frustrating orientalism and misappropriations found specifically in “Asian” musicals like The King and I and Miss Saigon, Hwang’s work functions as a loving critique of the broad strokes and generalities about Asian countries and cultures that Western musical theater has generated. Through a metatheatrical framing device, color-conscious casting and acting choices, and the excess and exaggeration highlighted by its set design and musical numbers, Soft Power flips the Americentric worldview upside- down to present a complex, farcical representation of America, embracing musical theatre’s form while simultaneously pushing back against the very sociocultural and political power system(s) that produce knowledges about other cultures. In a series of metatheatrical moves, a dramatized version of Hwang named DHH (Francis Jue) serves as the show’s protagonist who meets with a Chinese producer (Xue Xing, played by Conrad Ricamora) about his The Popular Culture Studies Journal, Vol.

  • Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. By foregrounding the role of the audience in creating meaning and by minimizing the “show” as a coherent work, I reconnect musicals to their roots in comedy by way of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of carnival and reduced laughter. The audiences I study are kids, queers, and collectors, an alliterative set of people whose gender identities and expressions all depart from or fall outside of the normative binary. Focusing on these audiences, whose musical comedy fandom is widely acknowledged but little studied, I follow Raymond Knapp and Stacy Wolf to demonstrate that musical comedy provides a forum for identity formation especially for these problematically gendered audiences. ii The dissertation of Samuel Dworkin Baltimore is approved.

Documentary Feature US, 2018, 79 minutes, Color, English www.wmm.com THE REST I MAKE UP A film by Michelle Memran The visionary Cuban-American dramatist and educator Maria Irene Fornes spent her career constructing astonishing worlds onstage and teaching countless students how to connect with their imaginations. When she gradually stops writing due to dementia, an unexpected friendship with filmmaker Michelle Memran reignites her spontaneous creative spirit and triggers a decade-long collaboration that picks up where the pen left off. The duo travels from New York to Havana, Miami to Seattle, exploring the playwright's remembered past and their shared present. Theater luminaries such as Edward Albee, Ellen Stewart, Lanford Wilson, and others weigh in on Fornes’s important contributions. What began as an accidental collaboration becomes a story of love, creativity, and connection that persists even in the face of forgetting. WINNER! • Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television
Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.
