We’ll pass it along to the actors and creative team throughout the performance. @theatreforanewa #MadForestTFANA A NOTE FROM JEFFREY HOROWITZ It is thrilling to be able to work with Gideon, Bard College, and this resilient company of artists on Caryl Churchill’s magnificent play. Faced with nearly overwhelming challenges of deadly disease, their production being disrupted, their college shifting to remote operations, relationships suddenly upended, and government-mandated social distancing, the artists used the constraints of their isolation to continue to create. I saw the 1991 American premiere of Mad Forest directed by Mark Wing-Davey at New York Theatre Workshop. It was brilliant. What Ashley, the cast, and creative team made is something I hadn’t seen before. The company had rehearsed together in person before being separated due to COVID-19 and forced to self-isolate. From their isolation, the company brings to this new production — re-conceived for Zoom — an energy to overcome their isolation. Ashley Tata built on this drive, went back in time to a 1990 play about the 1989 Romanian Revolution and then forward to now, reimagining Mad Forest and minting something new. It’s powerful not because there is a pandemic, but because the artists are exploring in fresh ways how Mad Forest comes alive on Zoom — not as a replacement for live theatre, but as another way performance can happen and a story can be told.

    PHOTOS: Headshots PRESS CONTACT: [email protected]// 212-539-8504 THE PUBLIC THEATER ANNOUNCES ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP PROMOTIONS Mobile Unit’s Roxanna Barrios Promoted to Associate Producer of Artistic Programs, Public Forum’s Bryan Joseph Lee Promoted to Director of Public Forum, and Producing’s Yuvika Tolani Promoted to Director of Producing September 15, 2020 – The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) today announced the promotions of Roxanna Barrios, Bryan Joseph Lee, and Yuvika Tolani. The promotions celebrate and recognize Barrios, Lee, and Tolani’s continued leadership, growth, and significant impact across the organization during their tenures. Barrios will serve as Associate Producer of Artistic Programs, Lee will serve as Director of Public Forum, and Tolani will serve as Director of Producing. Barrios previously worked on The Public’s Mobile Unit, most recently as Associate Director. In her new role, she will be overseeing and supporting all projects from The Public’s Artistic Programs, which includes Joe’s Pub, Mobile Unit, Public Works, Under the Radar Festival, Public Forum, and Public Shakespeare Initiative. “Roxanna has, over the past six years, become one of the most beloved and irreplaceable members of our artistic staff. Imagine a future in which the United States is no longer a global superpower but, instead, China is, and the rest of the world comes to understand American culture through highly-visualized, -verbalized, and -physicalized gestures generated by Chinese musicals. Commissioned by Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group for their 50th anniversary season in 2018, David Henry Hwang’s Soft Power asked audiences to do just that, displacing those who are primarily used to, perhaps even unquestioningly comfortable with, the deep-seated stereotypes and assumptions that American popular culture continues to produce about Asia – if only for a few brief hours. In response to the frustrating orientalism and misappropriations found specifically in “Asian” musicals like The King and I and Miss Saigon, Hwang’s work functions as a loving critique of the broad strokes and generalities about Asian countries and cultures that Western musical theater has generated. Through a metatheatrical framing device, color-conscious casting and acting choices, and the excess and exaggeration highlighted by its set design and musical numbers, Soft Power flips the Americentric worldview upside- down to present a complex, farcical representation of America, embracing musical theatre’s form while simultaneously pushing back against the very sociocultural and political power system(s) that produce knowledges about other cultures. In a series of metatheatrical moves, a dramatized version of Hwang named DHH (Francis Jue) serves as the show’s protagonist who meets with a Chinese producer (Xue Xing, played by Conrad Ricamora) about his The Popular Culture Studies Journal, Vol.
