Mitochondrial genomes of 26 cichlid species were amplified by long-range PCR followed by the 454 pyrosequencing on a GS Roche Junior platform. The primers for long-range PCR were designed specifically in the mitogenomic regions with low interspecific variability. The whole mitogenome of most species was amplified as three fragments using the following primer sets: for the region between position 2 500 bp and 7 300 bp (of mitogenome starting with tRNA-Phe), we used forward primers ZM2500F (5'-ACG ACC TCG ATG TTG GAT CAG GAC ATC C-3'), L2508KAW (Kawaguchi et al. 2001) or S-LA-16SF (Miya & Nishida 2000) and reverse primer ZM7350R (5'-TTA AGG CGT GGT CGT GGA AGT GAA GAA G-3'). The region between 7 300 bp and 12 300 bp was amplified using primers ZM7300F (5'-GCA CAT CCC TCC CAA CTA GGW TTT CAA GAT GC-3') and ZM12300R (5'-TTG CAC CAA GAG TTT TTG GTT CCT AAG ACC-3'). -

The University of Southern Mississippi PATTERNS OF DIVERSITY, ZOOGEOGRAPHY, AND ECOLOGICAL GRADIENTS IN HONDURAN FRESHWATER FISHES by Wilfredo Antonio Matamoros Abstract of a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of The University of Southern Mississippi in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2010 ABSTRACT PATTERNS OF DIVERSITY, ZOOGEOGRAPHY, AND ECOLOGICAL GRADIENTS IN HONDURAN FRESHWATER FISHES by Wilfredo Antonio Matamoros August 2010 Nineteen major river drainages across Honduras were sampled from 2005-2009 in order to understand Honduran geographical patterns of freshwater fish distribution, to delineate the Honduran freshwater fishes ichthyographical provinces, and to understand patterns of species assemblage at the drainage level. A total of 166 species of freshwater fishes were sampled, a 64% increase over previously published reports. Eight species belong to primary freshwater families, 47 to secondary, and 111 to peripherals. In order to understand the species-drainages relationships, a presence-absence matrix was built for the 19 major drainages and 55 primary and secondary freshwater fishes. -

Caio Isola Dallevo do Amaral Gomes Revisão taxonômica do gênero Pseudophallus Herald 1940 com estudo osteológico de Pseudophallus brasiliensis Dawson 1974 (Teleostei, Syngnathiformes, Syngnathidae) Dissertação apresentada ao Instituto de Biociências da Universidade de São Paulo, para a obtenção do Título de Mestre em Ciências, na Área de Zoologia Área de concentração: Zoologia Orientadora: Profa. Dra. Mônica de Toledo-Piza Ragazzo São Paulo 2016 Resumo Este trabalho é dividido em uma revisão taxonômica do gênero Pseudophallus Herald 1940 e em um estudo osteológico de P. brasiliensis. Pseudophallus foi descrito a partir de duas espécies distribuídas nas drenagens costeiras do Oceano Pacífico no continente americano (P. starskii e P. elcapitanensis) e posteriormente foi incluída uma espécie das drenagens costeiras do Oceano Atlântico, P. mindii, com ocorrência registrada até recentemente entre o estado de São Paulo, Brasil até Belize na América Central, incluindo as ilhas do Caribe. Em 1974 foi descrita uma nova espécie, P. brasiliensis, com base em exemplares coletados no Rio Tocantins com contagens merísticas mais baixas do que os exemplares da América Central e do resto do território brasileiro. Além disso, os exemplares brasileiros apresentavam uma variação clinal decrescente em sentido Sul-Norte nas contagens merísticas. Em 1982 esta espécie foi sinonimizada com P. mindii pelo fato de outros exemplares coletados em localidades distintas apresentarem valores merísticos próximos aos dos exemplares coletados no Rio Tocantins, indicando que esses valores mais baixos eram resultado de variação intraespecífica ao longo da distribuição de P. mindii. Annotated Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of Suriname
Annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of Suriname by Jan H. MOL* (1), Richard P. VARI (2), Raphaël COVAIN (3, 4, 5), Philip W. WILLINK (6) & Sonia FISCH-MULLER (3) ABSTRACT. - Data derived from the literature supplemented by examination of specimens in collections show that 481 species of fish live in the fresh and brackish inland waters of Suriname, with 394 of these restricted to fresh waters. These 481 species represent 16 orders and 64 families. Orders with the largest numbers of freshwater species in the Surinamese inland fish fauna are the Siluriformes (157 species), Characiformes (147 species), Perciformes (40 species), Gymnoti- formes (21 species) and Cyprinodontiformes (21 species). At the family level, the Characidae has the greatest number of freshwater species (83 species), followed by the Loricariidae (60 species), the Cichlidae (30 species), the Callichthyidae (23 species), the Heptapteridae (19 species) and the Anostomidae (17 species). Present data indicate that 25 of the species are known solely from locations within Suriname and 89 species solely in Surinamese river systems including the Maro wijne/Mana and Corantijn watersheds which in part extend into French Guiana and Guyana, respectively. Of 481 total spe- cies, 187 (38.9%) were based on type series that originated within Suriname. Continued descriptions of new species from the inland waters of Suriname demonstrate that the present total most likely distinctly underestimates the specieslevel diversity of the fish fauna. In terms of species per square kilometer, the presently documented richness of the Surinamese freshwater fish fauna is comparable to, or even greater than, the richness of fish faunas of several other tropical South American countries. -

This situation stands true for Mexican freshwater fishes and their corresponding ecosystems. In this respect, Mexico has a long history of environmental policy, and seeking to protect its biodiversity, the country has carried out a series of important initiatives in response to the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), such as the creation of the National Biodiversity Commission in 1992, the elaboration of the National Biodiversity Strategy, regional action plans, as well as conservation strategies for terrestrial and marine species and environments, but unfortunately, little has been done in relation to the conservation of freshwater species, nor the ecosystems they live in. With this in mind, the main aim of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of the Freshwater Fishes of Mexico, their conservation status, and to develop a conservation strategy for species with imminent risk of extinction.
