Letter from Ian Manning Mildura-Broken Hill James Wells was indeed correct in assuming that the current Transport for NSW bus service between Mildura and Broken Hill revived a previous service. On Monday 13.11.2006 I was one of four passengers on the run which left Mildura at 0900, connecting with the overnight V/Line bus from Melbourne, successor to the Vinelander. Presumably the service had originally been introduced as a Vinelander connection. I did not avail myself of the overnight bus, but rather travelled from Melbourne via Swan Hill the previous evening. The motel opposite the station provided for after-midnight arrivals by leaving pre-booked room keys under the doormat. I was one of four passengers on the 0900 mini-bus driven by Tom Evans, proprietor of Junction Tours. We arrived at the Broken Hill bus station at 1230. The only other user of this substantial facility was Buses R Us, with their three weekly trips to Adelaide - NSW CountryLink buses left from the Crystal St railway station, as did the train which I caught to Sydney on Tues 14th to attend a seminar at the UNSW on the 15th. It was an interesting route from Melbourne to Sydney and, thinking I might repeat the trip, every so often I looked it up on the web. Junction Tours was replaced by Buses R Us, who after a while made the service conditional on sufficient bookings, then eventually marked it as suspended, but not for ever: there came the day when their website announced 'We're Back!'. James Wells is therefore correct in suspecting continuity between the Transport for NSW service and the previous operator.     Volume – 28 Number – 1 March 2021 to May 2021 Edition The B-class were the first mainline diesel locomotives built for the Victorian Railways. The design was based on the successful USA Electro-Motive Division F-unit locomotives with the distinctive bulldog nose. They were unusual in having a streamlined drivers cab at each end. Frank Shea of Clyde Engineering, Granville, NSW, had negotiated with EMD to build the new locomotive locally. The order was placed in 1951 and the first locomotive was delivered on 14 July 1952. The 26 members of the Class operated on broad gauge lines throughout Victoria, working the majority of the important passenger trains, as well as fast freights. Many timetables were accelerated, and steam locomotives began to be scrapped in large numbers. The Chief Engineers Office found that one B-class did the work of three steam locomotives. Our overview comments in relation to the Discussion Paper are attached to this covering letter. Rail Futures was founded in 2013 as a non-partisan group to advocate a much greater role for public transport and the rail mode in particular and to follow international trends of much closer integration of transport and land use planning. Its members include a wide range of professionals and transport and planning practitioners. We believe that policies designed to transport more people by rail and other public transport modes and encourage active personal transport must be closely coordinated with land use policies and effective implementation mechanisms. Such change will yield great benefits in terms of Melbourne’s and regional city’s efficiency, safety, social cohesion, environmental sustainability and overall liveability. The attached Rail Futures paper advocates a Plan for Melbourne that integrates metropolitan and regional land use and transport strategies to ensure sustainable, resilient and less car dependent cities. We respectfully urge that the views and proposals contained in the paper are carefully considered and taken into account in the work to revise the original Plan Melbourne document. I trust that the following Discussion Paper overview comments, albeit somewhat critical, and our principal submission in our accompanying Rail Futures paper, “Future Proofing Melbourne” will be considered in the constructive spirit in which they were developed.
