Jan 6 Newcomers among the bands listed to play this week - The Renegades with singer Willie Sutherland, also Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Good win for Rovers - The Rovers brought off a first class victory by beating Carnoustie Panmure by two goals to one. Matt Smith, a Findochty loon now living in Carnoustie suggested that the Rovers should buy basketball boots, which he reckoned would hold well on the ice-bound pitch. They took his advice and it was £6 well spent. Up against a strong side the Rovers adopted a strategy that was before its time. Alex Simpson was set to range behind Alex Jappy, centre half, in a 'sweeper' role or extra defender.

Jan 13 Jones did good business at the Show - Messrs Jones Ltd, the Buckie shipyard got orders amounting to £25,000 at the Boat show in London. This could lead to work for additional 20 men. The Spey Mercia, the yacht the company had on show was built for a London businessman, Mr Wm. Wade

The Drovers is a new name listed among the bands booked to play at the different venues this week.

Fatal accident at Sherrifston, near Elgin , claimed the life of Buckie man, 29 year old Alistair Fraser when his mini car collided with a stationery lorry.

Rovers out of luck in the draw- Buckie Rovers have been drawn away from home again. This time they will have to travel to to play Cambuslang Rangers.

The Thistle play a brother of Tommy Christie - John 'Busty' Christie was in the Buckie team against Rothes on Saturday. A Navy man he had just been posted to Lossiemouth.

Birth announcement - It read that a boy, Karl, had been born to Isobel and Allan Fraser at Seafield Hospital on 28 December.

Jan 20 To receive awards - Mrs Betty Flett and Mrs Jessie Flett who rescued a three year old boy from drowning in Findochty Harbour are to receive awards from the Royal Humane Society.

Awarded the MBE. - Mr John Watt , a native of Fraserburgh and skipper of the Aden Fisheries vessel, Rizq-Al-Bahr that was built and launched in Buckie last year and then sailed to Aden was awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honour's List.

Jumble Sales - These are still seen as a good means of raising money. Both the ladies committee members of the Rovers and Thistle are to hold one.

The Mindbenders is a new name among the groups listed to play this week.

Jan 27 There is to be no administrative assistant for the Town Clerk - After all the noise created both within the council itself and the general public the council took the decision now not to create this post but to upgrade one of the senior members of staff.

Burns was celebrated by both Arradoul and Portknockie WRI's and also by Portessie Public Hall Committee Feb 3 Launch of the 'Diadem' A 63' seine net fishing vessel, the 'Diadem' is to be launched in the middle of next week from the shipyard of George Thomson and Son. Built for Skipper Edward G. Fiske of Lossiemouth and his three sons it has been ready on the stocks for some weeks awaiting the arrival of her engine with delivery expected this month. Three other fishing boats are meantime under construction at the shipyard, one a 76' vessel for Kilkeel in Northern Ireland, due to be launched in March, and two 69' vessels, one for Portsoy and the other for Buckie.

2 Don't invite crime - This is the message the police are trying to put across. Thefts of articles from unlocked parked cars have been taking place on an increasing scale in the Buckie district of late. The police have issued a further reminder to all motorists in the area to ensure that their cars and vehicles are properly locked up and made fully secure with the ignition keys removed before being left unattended. Cars left in dimly lit areas are especially vulnerable. (In December 2001 the police were issuing a similar warning but this was to make sure to lock the doors of your house, even though you may be in. A great number of handbags and other small, but valuable goods, have been uplifted by bold sneak thieves coolly opening the back door and helping themselves.) A Flu Epidemic is meantime through the local area with school children being among those badly affected. Of the school roll of 645 in Buckie High School Primary Department 280 pupils were off this week. Findochty School has also been badly hit.

Rovers crash - The Rovers good run in the 'Scottish' came to an abrupt end on Saturday when they were beaten by 7 clear goals by Cambuslang Rangers. The Rovers' team for Saturday is - S. Jappy, Wood and Taylor; R. Cowie, A. Jappy and Newlands; Reid, Simpson, Bruce, Robertson and Lyon. Reserve- Geddes.

Local actress was praying for the Rovers - Findochty born actress Nettie Morrison who lives in Cambuslang told the 'Advertiser' that she spent the entire afternoon on Saturday with fingers crossed for Buckie Rovers.

Feb 10 No ceremony - The hull of the 'Diadem' took to the water from Thomson's Shipyard with any launching ceremony. This will take place later.

Flu Epidemic on the wane - The number of pupils back at school would indicate that the flu epidemic that swept the north east with great severity is losing its grip in the Buckie area apart from Portessie where it seems to be still rife.

What's your taste? The Size 4 a new name on the beat scene are to play in the Public Hall, Craigellachie while in the Town Hall, Cullen the Peter Davidson Scottish Dance Band will provide the music along with the Soundcasters.

A second son for the Reidhavens - Lady Reidhaven gave birth to a son in a London Nursing Home. He is to be called Alexander. His older brother, born in 1963 is called James Andrew.

Return to Fochabers - Mr and Mrs Richard 'Dickie' Grant, who came from Fochabers to take over the Lennox Bar in Portgordon six years ago have given the business up and are to return to Fochabers. The new owners are to be Mr and Mrs John McKenzie from Inverness. At a small ceremony Mr and Mrs Grant were met by customers and presented with a number of gifts.

Feb 17 Move for High School teacher and CO of Sea Cadets- Captain K. M. Bendelow, PT of Navigation at Buckie High School for the past four and half years has been appointed teacher of Navigation and Maths at Burnham on Crouch, Essex. He is at present CO of the local Sea Cadet unit. At a meeting of the Sea Cadet committee Sub Lt. Richard Brown was recommended to take over as CO, to replace Captain Bendelow. Sub Lt. G. Smith declined the offer because of his employment. Mr Brown has been administrative officer for the past year.

Jim Leask steps down- Buckie Thistle manager, Jim Leask has given up the post on health reasons.

Manager of the DE shoe shop in Buckie for great many years' dies - Matthew Bunyan died in Fochabers aged 81. He has been living with his daughter who is married to John H. McKenzie of the shipbuilding firm of Herd & McKenzie. Mr Bunyan will be remembered as a very successful bowler.

Feb 24 Water of the Pot O' Linn claims life of Buckie child - Five-year-old Alexander Angus was drowned when he fell through the ice at the Pot O' Linn on Tuesday. Alexander lived with his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Alexander Gordon, 37 Harbour Street. James Parkes, 18, an apprentice slater who was working nearby made a brave attempt to rescue the child after he heard the scream for help, wading into the frozen water until it was up to his chest and searching with his hands below the surface. A full report is given on page 1

Death of retired architect. The death took place this week of Robert M. Fulton, a native of Forres, at the age of 72. He played for Buckie Thistle in the 1920's. He lived at Wyndham, High Street, the home of his mother in law. He was in business as an architect in Buckie for 40 years and for thirty years was Burgh Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector of Portknockie. He is survived by his wife and two sons Graeme and Alistair.

They're hard to come by - The West Church have had no success in fixing up a Church Officer with yet another advert found in this edition.

*** A 'Herdies' launch - The 'Golden Strand', an all steel stern trawler, the first of her type to be built at Buckie was launched from the yard of Messrs Herd & McKenzie without any ceremony. She has been built for Mr Cecil Mair, 165 Seatown, Cullen and Mr Wm. Wood, 2 Harbour Place, Portknockie. The 50' long vessel will join the Buckie fleet. The 'Golden Strand' demonstrates a complete departure in fishing boat construction at the port. Her 180hp Caterpillar diesel engine is place forward with accommodation amidships and fish room in the after part.

The Rovers played a friendly match against Inverness Caley - Score - 3-3. Geddes scored an 'ogee' for Caley while the Rovers' counters came from Simpson, Lyon and Walker.

4 Mar 3 A major extension to the 'Bulb' factory - It was estimated that 50 more jobs would be created at Buckie following plans for a major extension to the AEI factory. The factory presently employs 260 people and when extended this should rise beyond 300. The factory is meantime bursting at the seams said a spokesman for the firm.

The next election will see a three cornered fight - W. H. K. Baker the present MP will again be fighting for the Conservatives, Robert Middleton for Labour, while Basil Wishart will carry the Liberal banner. (Mr Middleton died on 9 January 2002, just at the time that was typing up these notes.)

The 4 Pennies will be playing in the Two Red Shoes next week while a 50/50 dance will take place at Cullen where music will be played by The Cufton '5' plus The Oddity. Both bands will be on the stage at the one time and will play dance about. The week after in Cullen the two bands will be The Drummond Cook Band plus The Rebel Sounds. On Friday 18 March Dave McIntosh, singer, will appear with the Jack Sinclair Band.

I'll buy Strathlene House Hotel might have been said by the present tenant James E. Murdoch to Buckie Town Council when he offered the sum of £3,500 for the property including the annex, lodge and part of the grounds with a further £200 for the furnishings of the hotel. His offer was unanimously rejected by the council as being much too low.

James 'Jimmy' Mayne died in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary this week at the age of 60. He was a native of the burgh and was a vanman with the Globe grocery firm for many years. Following wartime service in the RAF he set up in business as a motor hirer from his home on Cathcart Street. He later built up a small fleet of private buses. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter all three of whom help in the business.

No large scale development at Tynet - A Mr G.R. Cowie had plans to construct a filling station, motor showroom, restaurant, general store and Post Office in the existing buildings at Mill of Tynet but his plans were scuttled by Banffshire Planning Committee on the direction of the Secretary of State.

Rovers lose player - Alex Simpson who played at centre forward for the club has signed for Inverness Caley. Officials of Buckie Thistle were criticised for allowing yet another local player to slip through their hands but argued that Simpson had turned their offer down. ( One could not blame local players for taking this attitude during the long years when money was no object they were not given a chance when so many players from Aberdeen were in the team.)

Manager of the AEI factory moves - Mr J. Axon, manager of the AEI factory at Marchmont for more than two years left to take up a similar position with the firm at Preston

Mar 10 Portknockie to have a team in the Welfare League- a committee has been formed and with help from the town council Portknockie have decided that they will take part in the league. The name will be Portknockie F.C. and not as previously Seafield Albion.

5 Mar 24 Postman moves - Alex Curran a postman at Buckie for over 8 years has been transferred to his home town of Stirling. He was met by a deputation of his colleagues and presented with a gift by Head Postmaster, Mr Alex Lobban. Alex who was secretary of Buckie Rovers for a number of years received a clock from the club and was made an Honorary Member.

Don’t' be a fool come to our dance and have a breakfast before you leave - The Students Charities Ball to be held in the Two Red Shoes on Friday 1 st April will run from 9p.m. until 3 a.m. There will be a bar, three bands will play and breakfast will be served before the dancers leave.

Mar 31 Eight candidates for five seats on Buckie Town Council - More interest is being shown this year than for some time. The 8 candidates include four who are presently councillors - George C. Wilson, Adam Gowie, Alexander Murray and Peter Murray. Among the three newcomers are two former councillors, Wm. Thomson and John Burnett. The other candidate is Peter Jappy, Craigbo.

Gifts at three ceremonies - W.W. Dickie, rector at Buckie High School for the past 18 years was presented with gifts at three different ceremonies this week. He received a stereogram from the pupils of Buckie High School, a crystal vase and set of teaspoons from the children in the Primary Department . At a dinner give in his honour in the Marine Hotel he was presented with a carriage clock and a handsome cheque from members of staff. Mrs Dickie received a lizard skin handbag.

Buckie's Easter Princess - Miss Nessie Simpson, 20, of Cullen was chosen as Buckie's Easter Princess at a dance held in the Fishermen's Hall in connection with Aberdeen Charities Campaign. Chosen as her attendants were - Jean McIntosh, 17, 2 Alnath Place and Jean Crowe, 16, of Portessie.

Boat launch - A 63 foot long fishing boat, christened the 'Victory' was launched from the shipyard of Messrs Herd & McKenzie on Saturday. The new boat, which is powered by a 150 hp Gardner engine has been, built for three Lossiemouth men.

New rector for Buckie High School - Mr George McKenzie PT of Maths at Elgin Academy since 1961 was chosen for the post from 36 applicants, three being from Banffshire. Mr McKenzie who is 38 comes from a Lossiemouth fishing family and was educated at the local school and Elgin Academy. He graduated from Aberdeen University with 1 st Class Honours in Mathematics in 1949 and was also the winner of numerous class awards. He carried out research in Maths at both Aberdeen and Universities for the next two years . He graduated as a teacher in 1954 with his first appointment being at Robert Gordon's College where he was an assistant for three years. He was appointed PT of Maths at Grantown in 1957, remaining there for 4 years before taking up his present post at Elgin.

Coast railway to come under the axe - The Liberals offer to lead a campaign against this. Buckie Town Council is to continue their fight against the imminent withdrawal of passenger train services on the coast railway line. Councillor George C. Wilson spoke of the advantages of the railway when there were often difficulties travelling by road from Buckie to Aberdeen in winter.

**** Strathlene House Hotel sold - Buckie Town Council agreed by six votes to five on Monday night to accept an offer of £4,500 for the sale of the municipally owned Strathlene House Hotel to the present tenant, Mr J. E. Murdoch. The offer covers the hotel, annex, lodge and part of the ground adjacent to the hotel. The present facilities for the public at Strathlene - the ground to the north (seaward side, which includes the putting green, bathing pool, entrance drive and car park are unaffected by the sale and the community will continue to enjoy the amenities there as before.

No football on Victoria Park this week - The playing surface lies under several inches of snow.

Apr 7 Modern Dancing Enterprises have booked the Dave Harrow Quartette to play in Cullen while up in Craigellachie dancers can listen to The Executioners and The Facells.

Spey Bay Hotel, which was extensively burnt some time ago has been rebuilt to a certain degree and a new Cocktail Lounge and Public Bar will open on 10 th April.

Former Pupils Association - A FP Association of Buckie High School has been formed with Ian S. Bruce, present Head Prefect as president. The initial subscription will include the cost of the School Magazine. The vice-president is Sandra Coull, secretary - Susan Palmer; treasurer - Shelagh P. Brown. Committee members - Freda Milne, Moira Penwright, Louise Wilson and Helen Watt. All former pupils are eligible for ordinary membership.

Come Listen to the Big Band sound - The entertainment highlight of next week in Buckie is the visit on Monday first of the United States Third Air Force Band, with a 16 piece orchestra, who are to present a concert on behalf of the National Fund for Research into Polio and Other Crippling Diseases. . The concert is a must for all Glen Miller fans. The members of the band will receive a civic reception by the town council on Monday morning and in the afternoon will be taken on a visit to Inchgower Distillery and the AEI factory.

Farmer and ice-cream maker dies - Mr James Grant, Easter Bogs Farm died suddenly at his home this week aged 55. He carried on the farm of Easter Bogs and two outfarms, Minduff and Whitestripes as well as an extensive ice-cream business, which was begun in the latter years of WWII. He leaves a wife and a family of four sons.

Apr 14 Modern Dancing Enterprises advertise this week that the Smash Hit Show Stramash is to take place in the Two Red Shoes while two new groups, The Three Bells and The Senate will be playing elsewhere.

Boat launch - The 74 ' hull of the 'Steadfast Hope' was launched from the shipyard of Messrs George Thomson and Son this week. The vessel which is being built for Robert and Andrew Campbell of Kilkeel Northern Ireland is set to be completed in about six weeks time.

7 Apr 21 Buckie Municipal Election - Former Dean of Guild and Magistrate, Wm. Thomson, Shipbuilder, who lost his seat at the last election and declined to be returned through co- option was returned to the council at the recent election. A newcomer is fishing skipper, Wm. Cowie. A shock defeat was that of Adam Skinner Gowie. Also unsuccessful were John Burnett, a former councillor and Peter Jappy who had thrown his hat into the ring for the first time. The election generated more interest this year than last with 36.8% of the electorate voting as opposed to 25 % last time.

New CO for Buckie Sea Cadets - The new Officer in Charge of the Buckie Sea Cadet unit is to be Richard Brown who has been administrative officer for the past year. Captain Kenneth Bendelow, the first Commanding Officer is leaving shortly for a new teaching post in Essex. He received the gift of a silver salver at a small ceremony attended by the committee, staff and parents last Thursday while Dr Cameron, who presided, spoke of the good work which Captain Bendelow had done in connection with the Sea Cadet unit.

Another yacht launched - Another 'Spey' yacht was launched at Buckie on Tuesday from Messrs Jones Shipyard. This was the 18 th of its type to be built by the firm and for 51-year-old solicitor and estate developer, Wm. J. Wade of Gerrards Cross, Bucks. The yacht was on display on the Jones stand at this years Boat Show. She was christened Spey Mercia after Mrs Mercia Wade.

On trial - Buckie Thistle had Sandy Jappy, the Rovers keeper between the sticks on Wednesday evening against Peterhead when they won by four goals to one. The team was Jappy, Woodcock and Jameison; Farquhar, Cowie and T. Christie, Innes, McCall, Rattray, J. Christie and Bruce. The tables were turned completely on Saturday when they were walloped five nil at Nairn by the wee County. All five goals were scored by Dave Johnston to take his tally for the week to 9. (Johnston continued to be a prolific scorer with his club in the Highland League and was eventually persuaded to turn senior with Hearts but it didn't really work out for him.)

Successful Coffee Morning - Buckie Sea Cadets made £26 at their Coffee Morning held in the Commercial Hall on Saturday morning.

28 Apr A Bailie again - Wm. Thomson who was returned to the town council at the last election was appointed junior Bailie, a position he previously held. Jack Cole became Dean of Guild a post that has been vacant since the departure of Dean of Guild Wm. Masson to work in London.

It towers no more - A familiar land mark for 70 years has gone. The old high pointed bell tower and spire on the original part of the Buckie Low School on West Church Street was taken down by workmen on April 21 1966. It was found to be getting unsafe and the decision was taken to remove the tower and replace it with a flat roof. The lower part of the structure was erected in 1875 with the tower and spire in 1898. This was a the date which the workmen found inscribed on a slate. The work was done by the firm of Hector Flett, Building Contractor, Baron Street. (The tower was erected at the instigation of Rev Miller of the Free Church and cost £200 to erect. He felt that there was something missing on the street between the tower of the Church of and the twin spires of St Peter's RC Church. A.F.)

8 Wrestling - Wrestling fans will have the opportunity to watch their favourite sport when it returns for a third time to the Fishermen's Hall on Saturday 30 April.

The New Haven - is the name give to the extension to the Marine Hotel. A Dinner Dance will take place there on the 30 April when music will be provided by The Quartet

The St Louis Union hit recording of the 'Girl Group' will be in the Two Red Shoes this week, while The Drifters will be appearing in the Town Hall, Cullen. The New WildKats are to play at the Craig while next week live on stage at the Two Red shoes will be one of Britain's groups, The Fortunes with The McKinley Sisters , The Graeme Nairn St and The Facells Coming shortly to Elgin are Freddie and The Dreamers and also The Small Faces

Co-op butcher's shop - The SCWS had had a butcher's shop at 30-32 East Church Street since 1951. They had fallen foul of the town council since their arrangement fifteen years before had only been on a temporary basis.

May 5 Possible change of use for Enzie School (Clochan) At a meeting in Keith of Banff Education Committee members agreed that the buildings at Clochan were suitable as a school for mentally handicapped pupils. Mrs Johnston, the present headteacher would be willing to take charge, it was said.

Dust storms blown by winds reaching speeds of 50 mph were so thick that visibility was impaired and traffic held up. Dust, sand and top soil piled up in wreaths in some roads at right angles to the wind in the Moray coastal area that it required to be removed by tractors armed with shovels.

9 Not coals from Newcastle but oats from Australia - A cargo consisting of 420 tons of Australian oats for Banffshire was discharged at Buckie harbour last Thursday. The oats had been trans-shipped from London.

*** Buckie Thistle lost in the final of the Aberdeenshire Cup when they were beaten by Deveronvale by an aggregate score of six goals to three.

May 12 First lifeboat - The first lifeboat to be built in the north of Scotland for the RNLI was launched at Buckie last Monday, 9 May 1966, from the yard of Messrs Herd & McKenzie Ltd. She was the Mary Juicy, a 37' Oakley self righting vessel one of two lifeboats being built by the Buckie firm. The new lifeboat will take up duty at the Newbiggin station, Northumberland when completed. It is to undergo capsizing trials at Buckie today. (It has been said, by an official of the RNLI in Buckie that the former lifeboat on display at the 'Buckie Drifter' today in 2001 is the same vessel which before being put on display as a feature underwent considerable refurbishment

Fishing boat officially named - The 63 seine net fishing boat 'Diadem' the hull of which was launched three months ago from the shipyard of George Thomson and Son was officially named on her completion at the firm's shipyard on Saturday. The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs W. T. Fische, wife of the skipper who was later presented with a gold watch by the builders at a reception in the St Andrews Hotel. The Diadem left on Monday to join the Lossie fleet.

Rubber gloves - In the Queen's biography published today (10 January 2002) it is said that Mrs Margaret Thatcher when Prime Minister sent the Queen a pair of rubber gloves when she noticed that she wasn't wearing any when doing the washing up at Balmoral. George Tough is back with the Thistle - Tough , former player and joint manager of Buckie Thistle has been appointed trainer of the club. Alex 'Bomber' Thomson will assist him. Tough left Buckie to resume playing in the Highland League with Rothes for whom he has been trainer for some years.

HMS Wooton an inshore minesweeper built in Buckie by Herd & McKenzie spent a five- day courtesy visit to the town. Jones' Shipyard launch their 19 th Spey class yacht. The 19 th motor sailer yacht to be built by Messrs Jones since they broke into the yacht market a number of years ago was launched on Monday. The 35' 'Spey Warren' was ordered at the Boat Show by Lancashire farmer, Mr John H. Rimmer and his wife Marjory who live near Liverpool. It was Mrs Rimmer who launched the new vessel. She received a bouquet and brooch from the builders at a reception held in the Commercial Hotel. Four other Spey Class yachts built by Jones meantime berthed in the harbour - Spey Beam, Lambley Lass, Sunart and Peggy Yeats, escorted the Spey Warren into the harbour.

Buckie Thistle lost their last game of the season- they lost by three goals to two against Keith F.C. The team was - D. Innes, McCall and Jameison; Rattray, Cowie and Geddes; J. Innes, J. Christie, (Bruce) Smith, Bruce and Walker.

May 19 "The New Moon". The front page carries a full write up on the Buckie Amateur Operatic Society's production of the 'New Moon'. Included are photographs of some of the cast who played major parts - Peter Cowie, Barbara Banks, John Cormack, James Reid, Isobel Cowie and Margaret Smith.

Buckie Thistle have signed thirteen players - Unfortunately the two Christie brothers , Tommy and John 'Busty' will not be available. Tommy has been advised to give up playing because of injuries to one of his legs while his brother has been posted away from Lossiemouth. New signings are - Willie Allan, Gordon Geddes, Ronnie Mair and Leslie Watson. They have all been playing for Rothes. Geddes, Mair and Allan are local lads. One newcomer is Sandy Jappy, a goalkeeper, who has been signed from Buckie Rovers. Keith Rattray has moved to Elgin and Duncan Innes to Peterhead.

May 26 Council Houses - Buckie Town Council agreed to resume the sale of council houses to sitting tenants by 7 votes to two but the price at which they are sold will be an up to date valuation figure as advised by the District Valuer.

Special United Service - Ministers of all religious denominations in the Buckie area, including RC are to join in a special united service to be held in Buckie South Church on Sunday evening. The service will be conducted by Rev Canon D. McKay, Episcopal Church, Fochabers and the sermon preached by the South Church minister Rev R.R. Hunt.

June 2 Presentation - The two ladies who were involved in the rescue of Findochty toddler, three year old Ronald Smith, last September received their awards at a ceremony held in the Strathlene House Hotel on Wednesday. They were Mrs Betty Flett and Mrs Jessie Reid. The scrolls from the Royal Human Society were handed over to the two ladies by Provost Wm., Taylor of Findochty.

This Little Hut is not on the Prairie - No, this one has been built on the lower slopes of the Hill of Maud. A log cabin , formerly a woodsman's house at Banchory was bought by the Portknockie Boy Scouts two years ago. Recently permission was given by the farmer of Bogend, Mr Grant on whose land it has been erected and work has been taking place by the boys themselves and Mr Taylor, Scoutmaster at weekends to put things in order. It was opened on Saturday by Councillor Wm. Mair. The hut will be used by the Scouts for weekend camps and it is intended that it will be lent to other youth organisations in the area.

One new band this week - The Mindbenders

We have no need of money- It looks like it with no coffee mornings nor even jumble sales for some time while dances outwith those being ran by Modern Dancing Enterprises, in the Rathven Rural Hall, Arradoul Rural Hall, Shielburn, Clochan or Deskirt are things of the past. Bill Geddes is still getting a turn at the odd dance held in the Spey Bay Hall.

11 June 9 Ordiquish Water Scheme - The new £150,000 Ordiquish Water Scheme supplying the burghs of Buckie and Portknockie on a partnership basis was officially inaugurated last Wednesday. The water comes from the gravel beds of the River Spey and is pumped through pipes the eight miles to Rochomie Reservoir

Modern Dancing Enterprises have booked David and Jonathan plus the Soundcasters to play and sing in the Two Red Shoes. Tickets cost 7/- The Klondyke Show Band are to be in the Craig. Public Hall. Tickets here are 5/6. The usual buses will run to both venues.

Dance in the Spey Bay hall - The Hall committee are holding a dance in the hall on Saturday 11 June from 9 till 11.30 p.m. Tickets cost 3/- Bill Geddes' Band will play. (Thinking back to the late 1940's, I, along with many used to have a drink or two in the Crown Bar then catch the 9 o'clock he train to Spey Bay Station and then walk up to the hall where the dances were very popular. A bus used to go round by Tynet then through Portgordon to Buckie after the dance.)

Caller herring - The first herring of the season were landed at Buckie this week. They had been caught in Shetland waters.

June 16 A London - Buckie & District Society has been formed in London. The idea originated during a discussion that took place when a group of men from this area met for dinner in the Caledonian Club, London. Among the group was Sir Wm. Duthie former MP for Banffshire.

The Truth is the name of a new duo booked by Modern Dancing Enterprises to sing at one of their dances. 'The Truth' recently had a hit with the song 'Girl'.

A petrol station - Mr James Grant, Farmer, at Bogend, Rathven, had an application for a petrol station which he hoped to set up near the farm where he also intended to establish a caravan site. Little support was given by county councils but a site meeting is to take place.

The Oil Rig Off The Mucks - This is the name of the current serial written by Spike, which is presently appearing in the B. A.

Buckie Rovers who have an outstanding record of success to their credit since they entered Morayshire Junior football in 1961 have captured the League Championship for the second year in succession. They have now won it three times in five years.

The Copycats (the well-known Buckie professional beat group made their first appearance in their home town for over a year last Monday night when they played at a dance held in the Fisherman's Hall by their Fan's Club. Supporting them were Rebel Sounds from Keith and one of Buckie's semi professional group The New Jackobeats In April the group cut a long-playing record entitled 'Cats On The Tiles' in Frankfurt. A documentary film is to be made of the Copycats, which will be shown on the Continent in conjunction with the release of their record. The film will include 'shots' taken of Buckie. The Copycats spent 10 weeks in Germany and the remainder of the time fulfilling night club and ballroom engagements in England.

June 23 Modern Dancing Enterprises have booked the following new groups to play at dances in the Public Hall and the Fishermen's Hall, Buckie respectively - The Oreogons and the Aberdeen Phantoms.

12 Barns dances at Mains of Tannachy - The Banffshire Liberal Association are to hold barn dances at Mains of Tannachy, Portgordon on Friday and Saturday 24 and 25 of June by kind permission of Mr A. McHardy. A special feature on Friday evening will be the choosing of a Shepherd Queen. Music on Friday night will be played by the Phantoms. The dance will run from 9pm until 1.30 with tickets at 5/-. The Deveronaires will supply the music on Saturday evening with star vocalist Mike Smith. Tickets cost 4/- Free buses will run from Huntly via the Knock and Portsoy , from Keith and Newmill and from Buckie.

Banffshire Liberal Association will stage Sheep Dog Trials at Mains of Gollachy, Portgordon, by kind permission of the farmer, Mr Neish, on Saturday 25 June at 2pm. Spectators 2/6 with children 1/-. Refreshments supplied by the Lennox Bar, Portgordon.

New type of yacht launched - A new type of yacht was launched from the shipyard of Messrs Jones. Ltd last Thursday, the first of the Mark II series of the popular Spey Class motor sailer. The new vessel has a different type of deck arrangement from the earlier models. Christened the 'Lavrock' the 35' vessel has been built for the Rev The Hon Robin D. Buchannan- Smith chaplain of St Andrews University. He is a brother of Alick Buchannan- Smith Conservative MP for North Angus and Mearns. The owner intends to spend some time sailing on the west coast this summer.

A 'Herdies' launch - The ring net fishing boat, 'Flourish II' was launched from the shipyard of Messrs Herd & McKenzie this week . The new vessel has been built for Skipper John M. Sutherland, Hopeman and four others, all from Hopeman, including his brother David and can also be used for seine netting. The Flourish II has been fitted with hydraulic steering and is powered by a 200hp Gardner diesel engine. Other aids fitted are an echo sounder, fish scan and a transistorised radar system.

Profitable season for the Rovers - In addition to being league champions the Rovers won the Robertson Cup, the Stewart Memorial Trophy and the Nicholson Cup. George Robertson was their top goal scorer with 51 goals for the season.

June 30 Buckie's Gala Queen - A 16-year-old dentist's receptionist was chosen as Buckie's Gala Queen. She is Miss Elsie Murray, 9 Inward Road, and Buckpool. Her attendants are - Miss Jean Smith, 19, 13 McKenzie Road, and also Buckpool who work at the AEI factory and Miss Margaret Innes, 16, of 20 Seatown who works with a fishmerchant.

Afloat - 80 pupils from Buckie High School joined 1000 other Scottish schoolchildren on Tuesday on board the 20,000 ton British/ liner SS Nevasa for a 14 day summer cruise in the Atlantic. They will visit , Casablanca and . A part of five teachers will accompany the pupils.

13 Chosen as Shepherd Queen - Miss Margaret Kessack, 19, Upper Dallachy was chosen as the Banffshire Liberal Association Shepherd Queen at the barn dance held at Mains of Tannachy last Friday.

Keep right on to the end of the road - Two sisters who indeed kept on round the bend to give a total of 84 year's service to the teaching profession ends this week with the retirement of Elizabeth and Margaret Gauld at Buckie High School. They began teaching together in Buckie Primary Department, Elizabeth in the 'Infants' and Margaret in Primary 5 and kept the same classes throughout their whole career at Buckie where they remained throughout. At a reception held in the school they were presented with a table lamp. The two sisters are to spend their retirement in Keith.

History teacher retires - Mr R. Strang PT of History at Buckie High for the past ten years is retiring.

Jly 7 Buckie Gala Week - The front page carries a report of the activities that have been planned to take place . The town council are to put up decorations on the main thoroughfares. Friday evening The Gala Queen and her entourage are to go on board the lifeboat at Findochty and sail from there to Buckie harbour where they will be greeted by Provost Doran. From there they will be taken to the Fishermen's Hall where Mrs 'Georgie' Duncan will crown the Queen the last Gal Queen. A variety concert will then take place followed by a dance. The main event on Saturday will be a parade of fishing boats all gaily decorated. These will set sail after 2pm when all visitors and townspeople that wish to sail should be on board. The Queen will go by 'barge' to inspect the fleet before rushing back to lead the parade of decorated vehicles 'floats' through the town. Also on Saturday afternoon a bowling match will take place on the Victoria Bowling Green between Buckie and Lossie fishermen. On Saturday forenoon there will be a morning market in the north east quadrant of Cluny Square with a coffee morning in the adjacent North Church Hall, There will be a fishing competition at Cluny Harbour from 10am till 12 while the lifeboat will be open for inspection by the public. On Saturday evening there will be a display of dancing on Cluny Square by the pupils of Mona Grant's School of Dancing and a performance by the City of Aberdeen Ladies Pipe Band also an open-air barbecue. On Sunday there will be Drumhead Service in Victoria Park organised by the British Legion. Five-a-side football competition up to the semi-final stage will take place in the Linzee Gordon where there will also be a cricket match, both starting at 3pm. In the evening there will be a Swimming Concert in the Fishermen's Hall starting at 7.30pm On Monday there will be Children's Open Tennis Tournament at Tarbuckie and a fishing competition at the harbour. 14 In the evening there will be a Driving competition and Treasure Hunt organised by the Round Table. A dance will take place in the Fishermen's Hall with big bands in attendance. On Tuesday a Baby Show will take place in the Fishermen's Hall at 3pm. There will be a Judo Display by the north-east Police Counties Constabulary Sports Club., also a Police Dog handling display by the City of Aberdeen Police. A ladies football match between a team from the AEI factory versus a team from Huntly. This will take place at the Victoria Park at 7pm. Later, starting at 9pm Dave McIntosh and company from Aberdeen will be appearing in the Fishermen's Hall. On Wednesday - 18 hole golf Tournament on the Buckpool golf Course during the afternoon and evening. There will be bowling of the Buckie Bowling Green. There will be a Pet Show, Children's decorated cycle parade and Children's Fancy Dress Parade and Children's Sport. All of these will take place in Victoria Park from 2 until 4.30. The local BB's will give a display. Boys v Girls football match in the Victoria Park in the evening and the final of the Five-a-Side competition. The finale a carnival dance in the Fishermen's Hall for the over 25's commencing at 9pm

Teacher retires - Miss Nora Sullivan retired from St Peter's RC School last week after teaching there for 44 years. She was presented with a Wedgwood china tea set and a set of crystal glasses from pupils, former pupils and members of the staff. Mr George Campbell who has taught Maths at the school for the past 8 years also received a presentation.

Clever bairns - The Duxes of Cullen School are - Alexander Harper, Secondary while Margaret Main and Peter I. Findlay were first equal in the Primary Department.

Phantom Queen Miss Joan Coull, 18, of 17 Wallace Avenue, Buckie was chosen as Phantom Queen at a barn dance held at Mains of Tannachy, Portgordon by the Banffshire Liberal Association.

Clever bairns - James Reid and Charles Phillip were Joint Dux of the Secondary Department of Portessie School. The Dux of the Primary Department was Michael Phillips.

*** Enzie School (Clochan) to close - The school at Clochan is to close at the end of the summer term. This was approved by the Education Committee this week. After summer all the pupils will move to Portgordon School.

Closure of Lady Cathcart School - After 94 years in existence Buckie Lady Cathcart School that merges with Buckie High School next session held its last prize-giving ceremony this week. Mr David Porter, Headmaster, said that though the move was regrettable it was inevitable due to falling number of pupils attending the school. The Dux of the school is Eric Hay; with Donna Welsh second and Ewan Jameison third.

Stowaway - A young sailor, 17 years old, was court martialled at Rosyth this week. He was charged helping a 15 year old Buckie girl to hide on board HMS Wooton for three days from the time the vessel sailed from Buckie at the end of a five day courtesy visit until it docked at Port Elgar on the River Forth. During the time she was aboard he supplied her with food, coffee and gave her a blanket. She was discovered when an officer saw her poke her head out from under covers on the motor boat. She was in a most dishevelled state, dirt, with her hair etc. in a mess. She was given a bath before being handed over to the police. The sailor was given three months detention.

15 Football - The Welfare League - Following talks between Banff Welfare League and Buckie Welfare League it was agreed to revive the Ferguson Shield. It was also agreed that this would take the form of Selects from both Leagues playing each other on a home and home basis.

July 14 Yes you can go on the grass - Buckie Town Council have had a change of heart re allowing spectators to take their cars on to the grass at the Linzee Gordon Park to watch cricket and football games but at no other times. The decision wasn't unanimous since some councillors spoke of motorists racing about on the grass surface and doing much damage.

New Scout camp site opened at Deskford - This was declared open by Lord Reidhaven. A report is given on page 1

Mason Peta changes hands - The hairdressing salon at 33 West Church Street which was owned by Mrs Archibald has been sold to Mr Peter J. Lees, Inverness who is taking over on Monday 18 July. Mrs Archibald is leaving Buckie.

Farewell Dance - Prior to leaving on a Continental tour the local Pop group, The Phantoms, are to play at a Farewell Dance in the Fishermen's Hall on Saturday 16 July 1966, This will run from 9pm till 11.30pm with admission 4/6.

A trio of bands - The following bands are to play at a dance in the Longmore Hall, Keith. The Viceroys; The Rogues and The Copycats.

The Ferguson Shield - Banff Welfare League won the first game in the revived competition by six goals to two.

Rovers search for new blood - Buckie Rovers are on the hunt for new players to fill the gaps in the team caused by the loss of David Wood, R/B, to Huntly, Sandy Jappy, Goalkeeper to Buckie Thistle and Robbie Cowie, R/H, who has also taken a peg at Victoria Park. Their note said how they were on the look out for two full-backs, a centre half and two other players to fill any position to allow some leeway if players came to be injured. An invitation is extended to any player who would care to help out and are being asked to contact the secretary, George Kay. The Rovers train at Victoria Park the home ground of Buckie Thistle.

July 21 Buckie Gala - The front page carries news of the Gala. There are pictures taken at the Drumhead Service at Victoria Park; of the Gala Queen arriving at Buckie Harbour on board the lifeboat to start the week's celebrations. Waiting to greet her were Provost Doran and Bailies E.Douglas and Wm. Thomson with a guard of honour provided by the Sea Cadets under the command of Lt. R. Brown.

Mayne's Garage, Cluny Lane - The taxi service will cease on 30 July 1966. Thanks are extended to all those who patronised the firm over the years. The coach and garage part of the business will be carrying on as usual.

Milk round to end - Grant of Easter Bogs are giving notice that they are stopping their milk round on 31 July and that from that date it will be taken over by E. Boyd, Hillocks.

Its Real High Camp ( Whatever the expression meant and unknown to me in 2002) This was included in the advert calling on dancers not to miss the dance in the Longmore Hall, Keith, because of this. The three bands to play are the Rogues from England, The Viceroys from Ireland and The Copycats from Scotland. Bothy Nicht Concert - (Ernie Boyd and Company) in aid of Buckie Amateur Swimming Club will take place in the St Andrew's Hall on Friday 29 July at 7.30pm. Admission 3/- with children and OAP's 1/6.

Buckie well beaten - Banff Welfare League Select were worthy winners of the revived Ferguson Shield when their aggregate score line over the Buckie Welfare League Select was 14 goals to two.

Buckie Welfare League gets new trophy - A new trophy called the British Legion Cup has been donated to the local Welfare League and will be played for next season on a knock out basis.

New petrol filling station - Although some councillors questions the viability of such a filling station Mr Grant, farmer at Bogend was given permission to put in tanks and set up a filling station at his caravan site. It was to be used by caravanners only and no signs are to be permitted on the roadside advising of the location of the pumps.

No steel for foot bridge over the Buckie Burn - The proposed footbridge over the Buckie Burn, near to the Victoria Bridge, will be built of steel since this would put the cost £2,000 above the estimated price.

Jly 28 Additions to the Buckie fishing fleet- Two steel trawlers are to join the Buckie fishing fleet, they are the 'Smallwood' and the 'Manxwood' both being completed at an Isle of Man shipyard. Owners of the 53' long vessels , John Wood and Son (Abdn) Ltd say because of their class it will be more economical to fish from Buckie rather than Aberdeen. Each boat costs £33,000 is fitted with a 240hp Caterpillar engine and has a fish hold of 250 cwts. They are semi-automated and will carry a crew of five.

The Phantoms - The young Pop group the 'Phantoms' are seen in a photograph on the front page with their manager, Emile Wojcik pictured prior to their leaving on a two week tour of Poland.

Aug 4 Fochabers Gala Week - As ever this proved to be a real money spinner. The sum raised was £1600 with the profit expected to be in the region of £800. The organisers of the Buckie Gala thought that they had done very well to have a profit of around £350.

Portknockie to build new houses - Tenders of £40,000 were accepted by Portknockie Town Council for the erection of 18 new houses at Geddes Avenue. The houses will complete the scheme and the replacement of the burgh's prefabs.

Aug 11 Heavy rain and its aftermath - After almost 48 hours of continuous rain on Thursday and Friday widespread damage was created in the Buckie area with the Cullen district being particularly badly hit. Large tracts of farmland were flooded and crops flattened, roads undermined while a road bridge near Cullen was swept away by the roaring floodwaters of the Deskford Burn.

Floodwaters claim a life - Alan Dalgarno, 13 year old son of Mr and Mrs Alex Dalgarno, Claylands Croft, Fordyce was swept to his death while trying to rescue his bike which was in danger of being taken away by the water. His body was later found lodged against a tree some 500 yards from his home. The front page has some flood pictures. 17

Fish galore - After last week's spate there was a tremendous run of sea trout on the River Deveron. All day and into the evening on Saturday the banks of the Turriff angling Association water above and below the Forglen Bridge was crowded with anglers. Well over 100 sea trout were caught and some anglers had as many as 16 fish each. The average size of the fish was 4lbs.

You're not in if you are not there - That is in the Longmore Hall in Keith on 12 August in the High Camp Scene. Keith is the place where all the Friday night dancers are making for with buses running from practically all places round about. Playing this week will be Pinkerton's Assorted Colours. Next week will be the group Heinz (appearing for the first time in the north ) also appearing The Soundcasters.

(It is noted that whereas Modern Dancing Enterprises (Albert Bonici) used to have dances running in the Two Red Shoes in Elgin, sometimes also in the Town Hall and Assembly rooms, Craigellachie Public Hall, The Fishermen's Hall and Cullen Town Hall for some time now their only venue has been the Longmore Hall, Keith).

Peter Fair - The only indication that it had taken place this year is one solitary photograph showing some bairns on the chair-o-planes with a very brief caption written beneath, nothing else, no stock phrases even about the weather or the traffic - sad times!

The RNAS were still at Lossie at this time - This is known from a wedding photograph that described the groom, in naval uniform, as being stationed at Lossiemouth.

Expansion at Baxter's Fochabers - W.A. Baxter and Sons Ltd who already employ between 400 and 500 workers are looking for an additional 60 more female process staff as they expand.

Buckie Rovers win - Despite losing a number of player to Highland League clubs the Rovers started the new season well with an 8 goals to three win over Forres Thistle. Tommy Cruickshank had 4 Doddie Robertson 3 and Geddes on.

Start was not so bright for the Thistle - The first all local team since the early post war years (The paper says this but I think that should read pre-war.) were beaten 4-0 by Lossiemouth. The team was Jappy, Watson (Huntly) Allan; R. Cowie, Maceachen (RNAS), L. Cowie (Capt.), Geddes, Innes, Smith, Mair, Walker. 12 th man (note the term) Kelman (Elgin) (How could he say that the team was all local?)

Donnie McEachen, RNAS, a Petty Officer at Lossiemouth signed for Buckie Thistle after a successful trial game the previous week. In the trial game Buckie also had the following players showing their paces - John McVean (keeper), Raymond Boyd (I/R), Willie McDonald (O/R) and Murray Geddes (O/L) The team beat Deveronvale by four clear goals.

Aug 25 Accident leads to death of fisherman - A tragic accident on board the local fishing boat, t Flower, led to the death of Buckie fisherman, 43 year old Ernie Innes, 25 Barfield Road, He had his leg torn off by the spinning shaft of the vessel's winch. Although he was rushed to hospital he died shortly after arriving there. He leaves a wife and a family of four, the oldest 11 and youngest 4, three boys and a girl. The skipper of the Flower, his cousin and fellow partner, is John Cowie, 44 of 26 Admiralty Street, Buckie. 18

Enzie farmer dies after car crash - Thomas Stewart, farmer, Holl Farm, Enzie died in Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin following injuries he received when involved in an accident at Sherrifston Cross roads on the Lhanbryde to Elgin road. This is a notorious black spot with this being the fourth fatal accident in the last 9 months. Mr Stewart, 70, a bachelor was a partner with his brother Andrew as farmers at the Holl for the past 20 years, another brother, Robert, stays at the farm with them. A fourth brother is Buckie butcher, Charles Stewart. Mr Stewart was a passenger in a car driven by a relative and with others was on an afternoon outing when the accident occurred.

Calum Kennedy with Alex Findlay and full supporting cast will be appearing in a concert which will take place in the Fishermen's Hall on Monday 5 September.

Modern Dancing Enterprises - The Craig was back in their advert along with the Longmore Hall Keith. The King of Country and Western - The Drovers with the New Jacobeats will be on stage at Keith while the Flock will be performing in Craigellachie. "Its another 'High Camp' Saturday hop - be there" With the Longmore Hall being unavailable on Friday 2 September the dance will take place in the St Thomas's Hall (sweet memories) where a new group The Raging Storm (Manchester) will provide the music.

Sept 1 Big School roll - Buckie High School which then included the Primary Department also had a roll of 1240 when the schools opened after the summer recess. This was the largest roll ever. To care for this number 13 new teachers joined the staff.

Buckie Gala Week - The gross amount raised came to £556. After expenses have been met over £350 will be left. It is intended that £300 will be distributed among local charities with the remainder carried forward towards the cost of running a similar event next year. (The sum of £56 is gye SMA water when compared to that raised in a small place like Fochabers)

The Phantoms Polish tour - The young Buckie Pop group played before crowds totalling 85.000 during their 14 day Polish tour. The members of the group are - Wm. Smith, 17 an apprentice joiner and lead guitarist; Steve Coull, 15 a schoolboy who plays the saxophone; Stephen Wojcik, 16, an apprentice boatbuilder, electric organ; Stewart Geddes, 16, an apprentice electrician, drummer and Eric Farquhar, 16, apprentice engineer, bass guitarist and vocalist. The boys are all from Buckie apart from the last who comes from Portgordon

19 Sept 8 New prawn factory - A new prawn factory has been established in Buckie by 40-year- old Lancashire man, Charles E. Eckersley who sees a bright future in his new project with a fresh outlet for his activities as a fish merchant and continuity of work for his staff. A consignment of one and a half tons of scampi (processed prawns) left Buckie by rail on Tuesday afternoon bound for London's Billingsgate Market- the first large order to be dispatched from the new factory. A full report is given on the career of Charles Eckersley on page one and also an explanation of what is involved in the new process. There are also four photographs taken at the factory showing members of the staff but the reproduction is poor. The headline on the paper reads "Scampi Sales are booming".

Still more new names among the Pop groups - Swinging Blue Jeans will be playing at Keith on Friday and the Craig on Saturday.

The Growth of Purse Seine Netting - An article written on the subject is to be found on page ten of this edition.

Thomson's Shipyard receive an order - This is for a new 60 foot Danish type fishing boat to be built for Grimbsy owners. The keel will be laid in about a fortnight's time and will be capable of trawling or seine net.

Pedestrian bridge over the Buckie Burn - This will be designed so as not to detract from the Victoria Bridge. The bridge was originally to be a single span structure but this has been altered. It will also not be built of steel, which was found to be too expensive.

Bill Geddes' Band - Though not nearly so busy playing at dances as he was in years gone by there are still some organisations who like his music. He is to play at a dance in the Spey Bay Hall on Saturday 17 September and then over the River Spey at Garmouth on Friday 23 September. The first dance is to be run by the Hall Committee and the second by Garmouth and Kingston Liberal Association.

Football - For some years now football teams were allowed to have a spare man sitting on the bench to fill in if any player should suffer injury and have to retire. As such they were first known as reserve, this year the term 12 th man had been used now it seems 20 this has been changed to substitute. (The last term was still being used in 2002 but then as many as 5 substitutes were allowed on the bench with three being allowed to replace those on the field regardless of whether they be injured or not.)

Sept 22 Boat launch - A 61 foot motor fishing boat that can be adapted for trawling, seine net or ring net was launched from the shipyard of Herd & McKenzie on Saturday. Christened the 'Fair Morn' she has been built for three Dunure fishermen brothers, Alexander, John and Robert Munro. The Fair Morn has been fitted with a 270 hp Caterpillar diesel engine and will be ready for the sea in about three week's time.

Lost and found at Buckie Police Station - The two budgies which have been in custody at Buckie Police Station have been claimed but in their place is a white rabbit that was found in Commerce Street. Others items awaiting claimants include - a lady's wristlet watch, necklace, silver bracelet, wrench, screwdriver, oil filter cap, cigarette lighter, fountain pen, duffle bag, eyeshield, dictionary and a hymn book.

The Longmore Hall, Keith is the place to hear new groups play - On Friday 20 September The Flintlocks will play.

He makes a come-back - Tommy Christie the Huntly lad who played for Buckie Thistle until forced to retire from the game because of an ankle injury has resigned for the club with the ankle apparently becoming better. His brother 'Busty' (John) is still stationed at RNAS Lossiemouth and playing for Buckie.

Traffic restrictions on the main streets - Local traders are up in arms following discussion by the town council on parking restrictions on the main streets. The traders claim that the effect of this could be to cause shoppers to go elsewhere when we should be doing our best to encourage them to shop in Buckie.

Town Council allow Bingo to be played in the Fishermen's Hall - By 8 votes to two Buckie Town Council accepted the recommendation by their Fishermen's Hall committee to pay the £100 license duty required for playing Bingo in the hall and to make arrangements with Buckie Thistle F.C. who rent the hall and run weekly Bingo sessions in it for repayment of the money. The two councillors who opposed the decision were Councillor George Wilson, who doesn't approve of Bingo and Councillor Wm. Cowie who described Bingo as the most soul-destroying game ever invented.

New regalia for Lodge Gordon 589- A new set of regalia for Lodge Gordon 589, Buckie, was dedicated by Rev J. J. J. Gooding, Keith, Provincial Grand Chaplain of Banffshire , at a ceremony held in the Town House, last Wednesday.

The Rainmakers - a new group are to play in the Longmore Hall, Keith on Friday first. " Come and hear the High Camp beat".

Beadles are hard to get - The congregation of the West Church have been looking for a church officer for many months past, but despite being told that heating was by electricity no applicants have come forward for the post.

Fochabers Gala Week pays off - A clear profit of £830 was made at this years-Gala Week in Fochabers and shows up the much smaller , £350, raised at Buckie.

New street named - A street in the new housing area lying to the south of Well Road is to be called Milton Drive after former councillor, Bailie and Police Judge John Milton who lives at 8 Yardie.

Oct 6 Boat launch - The 71 foot long fishing boat Rhodella was launched from the shipyard of Messrs Jones Ltd on Wednesday of this week for local skipper, Eric Smith. The Rhodella is a replacement boat for his last boat, the Sirius, which sank in tragic 21 circumstances in the North Sea over two years ago. The Rhodella will be powered by a 200hp Gardner diesel engine. The new vessel has benefited from the expertise gained by Messrs Jones in building yachts in recent years. This is seen in the quality of the furnishings, the teak windows and the aluminium alloy spars (the last being the first to be fitted on a fishing boat in Scotland) and experiment which will be watched with interest both by boat builders and fishermen. Messrs Jones have built over 20 yachts during the last six years but Lt Commander Young, Managing Director of the firm said that their yards at Buckie and Lossiemouth were built wholly around the upkeep and repair of the fishing fleet and everything else, the construction of yachts and fishing boats, was subsidiary to this.

Boat launch - The launch of a second new vessel is recorded in this issue but this time from the shipyard of Messrs George Thomson and Son. The new boat, christened the 'Illustrious' was built for the well known Portsoy skipper, Wm. Hay. The Illustrious will be powered by a 200hp Gardner diesel engine. Associated with Wm. Hay in the building of the Illustrious is James Sutherland, Portsoy, and others. It is expected that the new vessel will be ready for the sea in about six week's time.

22 New Government Scheme of Supplementary Pension starts on 28 November. All those not in full time work who are over 65 in the case of men and 60 for women can have their income brought up to a guaranteed level . The sums are - £4.10 for a householder plus rent, rates etc. £7.2 for a married couple plus rent, rates etc. £3 .18 for a single person who is not a householder, plus 10/ for rent. For those with savings up to £300 these will be ignored and up to £800 will not greatly affect the pension.

Former Buckie G.P. Dr Wm. Ramsay who formerly had a medical practice in Buckie , ran from his home at Homewood, High Street, has been appointed an Assistant Medical Officer of Health for Banffshire . He follows in the footsteps of Dr Wm. C. M. Lawrence, also a former GP in the town who recently took up a post as an Assistant Medical Officer of Health with the county.

Oct 20 Boat launch - The third new fishing boat for the Buckie fleet to be launched within the past few weeks took to the sea on Saturday from the shipyard of Messrs George Thomson and Son. The 69 foot long seine netter, christened 'Internos' has been built for Sandy Sutherland, Portessie, presently skipper of the motor fishing boat 'Bezaleel'. His partners in the venture are his brother, Victor, Portsoy, his cousin Alexander Sutherland, Craigbo and brother -in-law, George Smith, Ianstown. The Internos will be fitted with a 200hp diesel Gardner engine and all the latest equipment and fishing aids by Kelvin Hughes, including radar, radio telephone, echo sounder, automatic pilot and fish scanner. 23 She will be the first of her class to be fitted with a special type of fish detection equipment known as 'Bottom lock'. Sandy's seven-year-old daughter, Morag was given the honour of launching her dad's new boat and was presented with a wristlet watch.

Oct 27 No traffic restrictions - The Buckie traders were able to convince the members of the town council that the traffic restrictions they had discussed for East and West Church Street and part of High Street could have a detrimental effect on trade and therefore ought not to be introduced.

Here's tae the Gordons! Three young local soldiers meantime serving with the Gordon Highlanders have been on a recruiting campaign in the north east during the last week or so, their photograph is on the front page - Pte's Sandy Goodall, Albert Seivwright and Wm. Gill.

A housewife's dream - Mrs Margaret Slater, 6 Samson Street, Portknockie was the envy of many after she was given the complete freedom of her local grocery store. She was the only Scottish winner of a cross -word held recently during Australia fortnight by a well-known honey firm in conjunction with MACE the grocery organisation. Her prize was a five minute 'Help Yourself' spree at the shop belonging to David G. Calder where she obtained her competition form. During her dash around the shop she filled half a dozen baskets and cardboard cartons with a wide assortment of goods. Her prize limited her to goods to the value of £25 but her haul came to £29.39. She had the opportunity to pay for the additional goods or hand them back, which she chose to do.

Portgordon F.C. are champs. Portgordon F.C. who were one of the prime movers to have the Buckie Welfare League revived were first to win the league after the new beginning. Oddly enough they contested the four finals played to come second in each one , i.e. the Duncan Cup, League Cup, County Cup and the Brown Cup. Arradoul and the British Legion being the victors.

Nov 3 Teacher retires - Miss Marie Birnie , a teacher at Buckie High School Primary Department for 36 years is seen receiving a pair of ear-rings from the rector, Mr George McKenzie on behalf of the school staff. He paid tribute to Miss Birnie's long and faithful service. She took a keen interest in opera along with her sister Annie, who was also a long serving Primary teacher and together they were responsible for the presenting the school's highly popular annual operatic production.

Schoolboy leads Lossie - Wm. 'Peem' McDonald a Buckie High School pupil was at centre forward for Lossiemouth F.C. in the Highland League match against Buckie Thistle on Saturday.

Nov 10 Buckie Post Office to be downgraded- The main Post Office in Buckie is to be lowered in status and come within the administration of Banff , the same as Keith where the change was made earlier in the year. Mr Alex C. Lobban, presently Head Postmaster at Buckie said that it was a question of economics the changes proposed, it had been estimated, would save £4,000 per year. He emphasised that the changes would make no difference to the postal services in Buckie and area.

Nov 17 Lorry driver lost in strange accident - When the cargo ferry, 'Isle of Gigha' overturned in rough seas off the island of Islay on Friday , Buckie lorry driver, 44 year old Mr Donald Cameron, 8 McKenzie Road lost his life. A fellow lorry driver, 60 year old Mr Alexander 'Sykie' Lyon of Yuill Avenue was saved after hanging on to a piece of drift wood until being picked up by the steamer, Locheil. Mr Cameron, who worked with Taylor's Transport, Buckie and Mr Lyon and employee of Hamilton Bros., Engineers and Steel were engaged on the delivery of steel to the island of Islay where Hamiltons were one of the firms involved in work at a distillery. Besides Mr Lyon, the skipper of the ferry was also saved by the only other crewman on boar, a middle-aged man from Gigha was unfortunately lost. Mr Cameron's son, Billy, a member of the 'Copycats' a local Pop group is meantime with the band touring Germany.

Buckie Burn footbridge - It has been learned that the footbridge to be erected over the Buckie Burn close by the Victoria Bridge will cost more than was anticipated. The original estimate was £6,300 but the new figures submitted have not been released. The bridge will be a universal beam type with a concrete deck.

Nov 24 Welfare Society handouts - Buckie Welfare Society made the first payouts from the Special Fund set up last year. Amounts given to different organisations ranged from £25 given to such as the Buckie Old Age Pensioners Association to £5 to Buckie and District Welfare Football Association and others. All together 27 organisations were given sums of money.

Dec 1 the Convent Feu - At their meeting this week the council discussed an application to build a house or houses on the Convent Feu, South Land Street. One councillor was of the opinion that this should be allowed on the grounds that a precedent was set when permission was already given to build a bungalow. A Coffee Morning (a rare event) is to take place in the Commercial Hotel hall on Saturday 10 December from 10am till 12 noon. Tickets are priced at 2/-. The Buckie Sea Cadets are running the event.

An Afternoon Tea will take place in the North Church hall on Saturday 3 December beginning at 2.30pm. This is being run by the 2 nd Buckie Boys' Brigade.

Dec 8 Lucky escape from death - Buckie electrician, 36 year old Alexander 'Sandy' Milne fell over 30 and landed on a concrete floor while working in a building at Helensburgh. He suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a punctured lung. He was removed to the Vale of Leven hospital. Sandy is married with one daughter and lives at 11 Barfield Road.

Rovers lose - The Rovers gave up ground rights when Victoria Park was unavailable and were beaten by four goals to one by Carnoustie Panmure in the Scottish Cup. The Rovers had a surprise win over the same team the previous year.

The Thistle in the doldrums - In a home game against their old and greatest rivals, Elgin City, the Jags got a thrashing by 8 goals to nil.

Buckie Lyric Opera Company under the direction of Miss Ruby Hughson put on a production of the pantomime, 'Mother Goose' in the Fishermen's Hall last week. It was the four-year old Company's second venture into the field of pantomime. They produced 'Cinderella' last year.

Dec 22 Free dance - Buckpool Boxing and Social Club are to hold a Free Dance in the St Andrew's Hall on Saturday 24 December. Music to be provided by the group 'Easybeats'. The dance will run from 9 till 11.30pm.

New name on the pop scene - A group calling themselves the Royal Teens are to play at a dance in the St Andrew's Hall on Wednesday 28 December, which is being run in connection with the Aberdeen Students Charities Campaign. The dance will run from 9pm until 1am with tickets costing 5/-

Three bands will play in the Two Red Shoes - The Krazy Knites, The Agents and The Throb. Admission 1 penny if it is dated 1953. Two will be admitted for a penny dated 1950 with six being admitted for a penny dated 1951. Also free entry for Curly toothed creeps or Bald Bearded dolls. Otherwise the normal admission charge is 6/-

26 Morning dance - A dance will take place in the Longmore Hall, Keith on the 26 December starting at 1 minute past midnight on Monday morning 26 December until 4 am. On Monday night a dance will also take place in the Fishermen's Hall, Buckie from 9p until 1am. Admission 6/-

The London Boat Show - Messrs Jones Shipyard have once again taken a stand at this year's Boat Show at Earl's Court, London. The exhibit will again be one of their famous Spey class motor sailer yachts. This year's exhibit is the 35 foot long 'Galena' which left from Buckie last Thursday by lorry on the 600 mile journey to London where it is expected to reach tomorrow, Friday. The 'Galena; is the 21 st Spey Class yacht to be built by the firm since they branched out into the yacht market a number of years ago. It has already found an owner, Robert. A. Smith, of Pitcaple, Aberdeenshire. After the Show, which runs from January 4 th until the 14 th the yacht will be taken back to Buckie to be launched in the spring.

At last - Buckie Thistle won their first league game of the season when they beat Keith by six goals to one. This was a surprise result and much of the credit for the win has to go to Robbie Cowie. Though he mostly played in the half line on this occasion he had been listed at inside left. He injured his knee and had to leave the field only to come back on later to score an amazing hat trick in 48, 51 and 58 minutes before having to retire once again.

Big fish - A 14 stone halibut was landed at Buckie from the local fishing boat Stroma. It was bought by T. B. Cruickshank.

An innovation - A gathering of 250 people attended Buckie North Church Christmas Fellowship Meal - a part service part social innovation that replaced the normal evening service on Sunday. The event designed to help people to understand the meaning of Christmas better took place by candle light in the church hall where the congregation seated at tables were served with soup, oatcakes, cheese and tea and entertained to solos and choir items. Rev Ainslie Walton presided and the guest speaker was Rev Canon J. L. Stewart Rector of Buckie All Saints Episcopal Church.

Dec 29 Buckie Rovers lose a staunch supporter - With the death t of James Murray 'Costie' at the age of 80 Buckie Rovers lost one of their most staunch supporters. A bachelor 'Costie' attended all of the home games and also travelled away to some. Players and officials of the club carried the coffin to the graveside and also acted as pall bearers.

Christmas Queen - Fifteen year old Miss Audrey Mayne of 5 Barhill Road was chosen as the Buckie Thistle F.C. Christmas Queen.

No more petrol - Willie Cowie, known to many as 'Petrol Willie' is giving notice that he is to close his petrol station at Ianstown on December 28. He took the opportunity to thank all that had supported him over the years.

A morning dance - following the success of the early morning dance on Boxing Day a second morning dance will take place in the Longmore Hall, Keith on 2 nd January. This will again begin at 1 minute past midnight and end at 4am. Music will be played by The Phantoms and The Agents.

Buckie Rovers had a free date on Saturday past and will have again this week. Morayshire Junior F.A decided to have a two week break over the festive season.
