Amphipod Newsletter 21 1 NEW AMPHIPOD TAXA IN AMPHIPOD NEWSLETTER 21 Wim Vader As usual, this index is divided into two parts, a first one with the alphabetical listing of the new taxa, and a second one with the taxonomic ordering. Both are meant to be used together with the annotated bibliography in AN 21. New families and subfamilies in AN 21 This is a difficult task, as there is little agreement as to what constitutes a valid family in the order Amphipoda, and e.g. Bousfield and collaborators revive many families that have recently been merged by e.g. Barnard & Karaman. These have not been included here, as many of these familiy names, as e.g. Calliopiidae and Pontogenendae, are still in regular use anyway, and the situation in the melitoid-hadziid group is quite unclear to me. A review and inventory of all 26 previously described species of freshwater crangonyctoid amphipods in Australia is given and accompanied by the description of seven new species found mixed in type collections or otherwise associated. All extant types have been examined and redescribed. The Australian crangonyctoids belong in the families Paramelitidae and Neoniphargidae and a new family, Perthiidae. Four new genera are described to align the classification properly. The Australian crangonyctoids are now placed in the families Paramelitidae, with Austrogammarus, Austrocrangonyx, Antipodeus (n.gen.), Hurleya, Uroctena, Giniphargus and Protocrangonyx; the Neoniphargidae, with Tasniphargus (n.gen.), Neoniphargus, Yulia (n.gen.) and Wesniphargus (n.gen.); and Perthiidae, with Perthia. Keys are provided to (1) the world groups of crangonyctoids, (2) Australian crangonyctoids, (3) the genera of each family, and (4) individually for the species of each genus. Accepted 23 August 2013 Three species of marine Amphipoda, Peramphithoe africana, Varohios serratus and Ceradocus isimangaliso, are described as new to science and an additional 13 species are recorded from South Africa for the first time. Twelve of these new records originate from collecting expeditions to Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, while one is an introduced species newly recorded from Simon’s Town Harbour. In addition, we collate all additions and revisions to the regional amphipod fauna that have taken place since the last major monographs of each group and produce a comprehensive, updated faunal list for the region. A total of 483 amphipod species are currently recognized from continental South Africa and its Exclusive Economic Zone . Of these, 35 are restricted to freshwater habitats, seven are terrestrial forms, and the remainder either marine or estuarine. The fauna includes 117 members of the suborder Corophiidea, 260 of the suborder Gammaridea, 105 of the suborder Hyperiidea and a single described representative of the suborder Ingolfiellidea.

Sampling for both stygobitic and troglobitic fauna has taken place on the island since 1991, and Humphreys (2001) summarised the then current state of knowledge of the island’s subterranean fauna. Sampling for impact assessment purposes on the island over the past decade has substantially increased the recorded species richness of Barrow Island. The number of documented stygal taxa has more than doubled since 2001, from 25 to 63 species now known. Troglobitic diversity has also substantially increased, with six species known in 2001 and 19 troglobitic taxa known today.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Stygofaunistic surveys of peninsular India yielded, among others, three new cavernicolous amphipod taxa: Orientogidiel- la reducta gen. n., sp. n. in the Borra caves of Andhra Pradesh state, Bogidiella hindustanica sp. n. (Bogidiellidae) and Indoniphargus subterraneus sp. n. (Austroniphargidae) in the Kapiladevi caves of Telangana state. The new genus, Ori- entogidiella gen. n., is proposed to accommodate all the hitherto known species of the Bogidiella indica-group. This paper gives an illustrated description of the three new species together with their taxonomic affinities. A new record of O. indica comb. n., from the Guthikonda caves in Andhra Pradesh is provided as well. The structure of the Indoniphargus mandible is revisited with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and revealed a poorly known flexible structure on the molar process which could be useful for phylogenetic purposes. The species diversity and geographic distribution of the Indian stygobi- otic amphipods are briefly reviewed. Sampling for both stygobitic and troglobitic fauna has taken place on the island since 1991, and Humphreys (2001) summarised the then current state of knowledge of the island’s subterranean fauna. Sampling for impact assessment purposes on the island over the past decade has substantially increased the recorded species richness of Barrow Island. The number of documented stygal taxa has more than doubled since 2001, from 25 to 63 species now known.

    Action Statement FloraFlora and and Fauna Fauna Guarantee Guarantee Act Act 1988 1988 No. No. ### 110 Sherbrooke Amphipod Austrogammarus haasei Description and Distribution Amphipods are small, laterally flattened crustaceans, growing to between 1 and 1.65cm long (Williams 1980). The amphipod Austrogammarus haasei Sayce 1901 (Amphipoda: Paramelitidae) was first described by Sayce (1901) and redescribed by Williams & Barnard (1988). The type locality for A. haasei is given as ‘Monbulk at 250m altitude’ (Williams and Barnard 1988). Unfortunately, no detailed location of this site is available, but the altitude suggests that it probably was in Sassafras or Emerald Creeks, above the town of Monbulk. Williams and Barnard (1988) did not mention any new localities recorded for the species from their survey. A survey of 46 sites in the Dandenong Ranges was Sherbrooke Amphipod Austrogammarus haasei subsequently conducted in 1995, specifically for (illustration by Savina Hopkins) (x8 approx.) the Dandenong Freshwater Amphipod Austrogammarus australis (Doeg et al. 1996). This survey located A. haasei at two sites in the upper reaches of Sherbrooke Creek. The species was not located in creeks around the presumed type locality. Only two other amphipods occur in this area, the Dandenong Freshwater Amphipod A. australis and a species from the family Eusiridae (Doeg pers. comm.). Current conservation status in Victoria The Sherbrooke Amphipod has been listed as a threatened taxon in Schedule 2 of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. The amphipod has a very restricted distribution in Victoria. Until recent successful surveys, it had not been collected since Distribution in Victoria since 1970 1911, and is absent from the presumed type [source: Atlas of Victorian Wildlife, NRE 1999] locality.
