*Note: In order to apply for the School Choice Programs online, you must create or use your 2012- 2013 Eportal username and password.

Follow the directions below, only if you do not have an account to access eportal. DeKalb Public School Applicants follow steps 1 – 8. Private and Home School Applicants follow steps 1 – 5. 1. At http://eportal.dekalb.k12.ga.us , go to the “Log In ” button in the upper right corner of the page. 2. Click on “Parent Create New Account .” 3. Click the box to agree to the terms and conditions at the bottom of the page. 4. Click the “Next ” box. 5. Follow the instructions on the site to establish an account. 6. Complete the student number, birth date and GTID number. *NOTE: The student number and GTID number may be found on the January 2012 DeKalb report card . 7. For current DeKalb County School System students, click the “Add Student” button for each additional student. *NOTE: You must allow 2 business days for authorization by the local school registrar. 8. Follow the directions to complete the online application.

Current Authorized DeKalb County Parents Completing a School Choice Application 1. At http://eportal.dekalb.k12.ga.us , log into your account. Click the “Login ” button. 2. Go to the “School Choice ” link. 3. Select the school choice school or program 4. Click your child’s blue student identification number. 5. Review the information on the application. *NOTE: If ANY information is incorrect or incomplete, you will not be able to submit your application. 6. Click the “Save ” button on the bottom of the application! 7. Check the applicant’s registration status (see registration statuses below) and errors listed a the top of the application. *NOTE: If any documents are requested, you must mail or hand deliver the documents to the Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083. Private School Students/Home School Students 1. At http://eportal.dekalb.k12.ga.us , log into your account. Click the “Login ” button. 2. Go to the “School Choice” link. 3. Select the school choice school or program 4. Click on the “New Student Only ” button. You will not need a student ID number to complete an application. 5. Complete the entire application. 6. Click the “Save ” button on the bottom of the application! 7. Check the applicant’s registration status (see registration statuses below) and errors listed a the top of the application. *NOTE: If any documents are requested, you must mail or hand deliver the documents to the Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083.

Registration Statuses Eligible The application has been processed and the student will participate in the choice one lottery. Ineligible The application has been processed. However, the application contains one or more errors or required documents. Do NOT complete another application. The student WILL NOT participate in the lottery until all supporting documentation is submitted to the Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office prior to the February, 2012 deadline. Deactivated The application has been removed from the lottery process. Selected The student has been selected for a school choice program and may enroll if the registration process is completed. Wait List The student has NOT been selected for a school choice program. The student may be notified for placement if a seat becomes available on or before September 28, 2012. DeKalb County School System School Choice Programs Automation Process

The DeKalb County School System will utilize a random automated process to select eligible applicants for all School Choice Programs.

•All lottery results are subject to verification by the Management Information System Office. Any malfunction of the lottery system will result in the immediate voiding of the drawing. The DeKalb County School System reserves the right to void and repeat any lottery drawing that results from any system malfunction or human error.

•All lottery sessions will be held internally at the DeKalb County Board of Education.

•Students selected for any School Choice Program during the first choice lottery must register at the local school choice site by June 18, 2012 or the seat will be declined and offered to the next eligible applicant on the waiting list.

•Alternate lottery dates to fill additional seats will be held internally every Tuesday following the initial lottery date at the DeKalb County Board of Education. Registration dates for selected students will be provided in the acceptance letter.

•For all School Choice Programs with more than one choice available, the first choice lottery will be conducted initially. If additional seats are available after the first choice lottery, applicants not selected for their first choice will be placed in the second choice lottery. The applicant will be removed from the first choice waiting list to participate in the second choice lottery. The applicant will not return to the previous waiting list.

Appeals regarding the selection processes, procedures and outcomes must be submitted in writing to the Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office by September 28, 2012. All appeals will be reviewed and resolved by the Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office administrators. All decisions will be submitted in writing and all decisions will be final. 1. When is the 2012-2013 School Choice Open Enrollment? January 23, 2012 – February 17, 2012 2. When and where will the 2011-2012 School Choice applications be available? January 23, 2012 – February 17, 2012 online at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/about/schoolchoice/index.html 3. Where may I apply? On your personal computer (ONLINE) , local library (ONLINE) , local school (ONLINE) , the Gifted, Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Officeat 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083 (ONLINE) . 4. Do I need a parent portal account to apply for a School Choice program? Yes. You must have a parent portal account and all current DeKalb County School System parents must be authorized to apply for any School Choice program. Private school and home school students will only need to create a parent portal account. Authorization is not required for private school and home school applicants. 5. How long does it take to become an authorized user? The local school registrar will have two business days to complete the authorization process. 6. May I apply online? Yes. You may apply at http://eportal.dekalb.k12.ga.us. 7. Can I apply for a School Choice program if my child is a private school or home school student? Yes. The parent or legal guardian of the child must be a current resident of the DeKalb County School District at the time of open enrollment and thereafter. 8. Where can I find the eligibility requirements for each School Choice program? All eligibility requirements are located in the 2012-2013 School Choice Catalog located at your local school or at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/about/schoolchoice/index.html. 9. Can I mail the application and supporting documentation? Yes. Please mail all correspondence to the Gifted, Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Officeat 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083. 10. May I apply for more than one School Choice program? Yes. You may apply for any program that your child is eligible for based on the published eligibility criteria. However, there is a limit of two magnet choices that may be selected. 11. How are students selected to participate in a School Choice program? Students are selected by a computer automated lottery process. 12. When and where are the School Choice Program lotteries held? The School Choice Program lotteries are held April 2012. 13. Are late School Choice applications accepted? Yes. However, late applications are not guaranteed consideration for placement. If additional seats are available after the lottery is held and all selected students and wait list students are placed, late applicants may be considered. The Gifted, Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office will contact parents regarding placement of late applicants. Placement will not be available after September 28, 2012. 14. How will parents be notified? The Gifted, Gifted, Magnet and Theme Schools Office will notify each applicant by US mail only . Student information will not be provided by telephone. If you applied online, you may check the selection status of your child by returning to the online application and checking the registration status at 5:00 p.m. on the day of the lottery. 15. When do I need to register at the School Choice program school site if selected for a program? Parents must register at the School Choice program school site during the month of June and July or the seat will be declined and offered to the next eligible applicant on the waiting list. 16. Will transportation be provided for the School Choice programs? The most current DeKalb County transportation policy will be followed for the School Choice Programs. During the 2011-2012 school year, students will report to designated satellite pickup locations in their region for transportation to all magnet programs/schools. Transportation is not provided for Regional School Choice Programs, Charter Programs or Montessori Programs if the student resides outside the attendance area of the school in which the program is housed. The Department of Transportation will mail out bus schedules during the month of July. 17. When will placement end for the School Choice programs? Vacancies will be filled until September 28, 2012. 18. Where can I find more information about the 2011-2012 School Choice programs? These options allow participants to explore and develop special skills. Because your child's education is a priority, DeKalb invites you to visit its magnet programs. The application is not available in this brochure. Kittredge/Wadsworth Rising fourth graders will be selected by conducting a school-by-school lottery. This means each elementary school with eligible applicants will have at least one student selected from its pool of applicants. All private and home school students will represent a “school” and at least one student will be selected from the pool of applicants. Additional eligible fourth grade students may be considered for a second at-large drawing if seats are available after the initial selections. Fourth grade students not selected will be wait listed. Program Description: Coralwood is a school that specializes in Early Childhood Education for students with disabilities and typically developing students. The school serves children beginning at three years of age through kindergarten. The school follows the state approved, age appropriate curriculum for the students enrolled at Coralwood. Many of the classes provide an integrated educational setting that places students with disabilities alongside students who are typically developing. Typically developing students selected to enroll in the Coralwood/Hawthorne Partnership may continue enrollment to the highest grade level at Hawthorne Elementary School.

Program Description: The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is designed for students who desire the most rigorous, advanced, and challenging program of study. IB candidate students take pre-university level courses throughout their 11 th and 12 th grade years. Traditional academic subjects are part of the program, but it also emphasizes the interrelatedness of knowledge and skills through a transdisciplinary programme of inquiry which is supported by a required course, Theory of Knowledge (ToK). The IB DP subject areas are first language, second language, social studies, mathematics, science and fine arts. Students are required to develop a proficiency in a second language during the program. Students are accessed internally by IB trained teachers at the local authorized IB schools and externally by 5,000 IB examiners worldwide to receive the IB Diploma. DP students must also complete 150 Creativity, Action, & Service (CAS) hours, complete a 4,000 word essay , and take the ToK course. Advanced standing is given by colleges and universities in the United States and around the world.
