  • American Games: a Historical Perspective / by Bruce Whitehill
American Games: A Historical Perspective / by Bruce Whitehill istorians investigating board games of the world have traditionally examined ancient or early games, using artifacts, drawings, and available text. From this, Hthey hoped to learn more about the cultures in which these games flourished, how the games moved from one territory to another (trade routes), and how they chan- ged and evolved in different cultures. Traditional classic games such as chess, checkers (draughts), Mancala, Pachisi, Mill (Mühle or Nine Mens Morris), Fox and Geese, and the Game of Goose, among others, have been studied in great detail by many scholars. Some of these games were played on quite elaborate, carved wooden boards, and, as such, they were available only to a privileged few. In the middle 1800s, however, advances in lithography and in techniques of the mass production of printed matter allowed games to be commercially produced in large quantities. They were also inexpensive enough to be affordable by the less affluent. This meant that games could reach a larger portion of the population, and become a staple in more homes. What purposes have games served in society? Were they recreational or were they intended as educational or instructional instruments? And who manufactured and sup- plied these games to the public? In the United States, a study of games poses one immediate limit for the researcher: the term “ancient” hardly applies to a country that was not formally “discovered” until 1492. Well into the 1800s, most board games played in North America were of European origin. Culin (1907) lists the board games played by the American Indians under the hea- ding “European games,” though games he categorized as “dice games” are actually board games that use dice to determine movement.

  • Monopoly's Inventor
Monopoly’s Inventor: The Progressive Who Didn’t Pass ‘Go’ - The New York Times 17/07/2015 09:13 http://nyti.ms/1uOt6VB BUSINESS DAY Monopoly’s Inventor: The Progressive Who Didn’t Pass ‘Go’ By MARY PILON FEB. 13, 2015 For generations, the story of Monopoly’s Depression-era origins delighted fans almost as much as the board game itself. The tale, repeated for decades and often tucked into the game’s box along with the Community Chest and Chance cards, was that an unemployed man named Charles Darrow dreamed up Monopoly in the 1930s. He sold it and became a millionaire, his inventiveness saving him — and Parker Brothers, the beloved New England board game maker — from the brink of destruction. This month, fans of the game learned that Hasbro, which has owned the brand since 1991, would tuck real money into a handful of Monopoly sets as part of the game’s 80th “anniversary” celebration. The trouble is, that origin story isn’t exactly true. It turns out that Monopoly’s origins begin not with Darrow 80 years ago, but decades before with a bold, progressive woman named Elizabeth Magie, who until recently has largely been lost to history, and in some cases deliberately written out of it. Magie lived a highly unusual life. Unlike most women of her era, she supported herself and didn’t marry until the advanced age of 44. In addition to working as a stenographer and a secretary, she wrote poetry and short stories and did comedic routines onstage. She also spent her leisure time creating a board game that was an expression of her strongly held political beliefs.

  • The Anspach Archives Collection Documenting the True History of Monopoly® As Affirmed by Court Fact Findings
THE ANSPACH ARCHIVES COLLECTION DOCUMENTING THE TRUE HISTORY OF MONOPOLY® AS AFFIRMED BY COURT FACT FINDINGS. By Ralph Anspach © WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS HISTORIAL COLLECTION? Since Professor Ralph Anspach uncovered the true history of Monopoly®, other histories have adjusted their narration to self-serving portions of his discoveries. The true history, authenticated by court fact findings, is embedded in the documents in this collection. These documents prove that: • While other versions now recognize that Elizabeth Magie invented the forerunner to Monopoly®, The Landlord’s Game, they fail to report that Magie also invented the basic monopoly game concept circa 1904. • While other versions give some grudging credit to the Atlantic City Quakers for inventing parts of the current Monopoly®, they fail to report that the Quakers alone developed Magie’s monopoly game into the renowned Monopoly® in terms of play action, diversified tokens, and property names and values. • While other versions now acknowledge that Darrow was erroneously credited with inventing all of Monopoly®, they do not reveal why this happened. This collection proves that the distortion of history was a scheme to appropriate a folk game from the public domain by the fabrication of a false inventor—a scheme to privatize and monopolize the public domain monopoly game. • Only this collection proves that Monopoly® started its career as an anti- monopolistic spoof of monopoly capitalism. Its creators thought that people would understand that one gets rich in Monopoly® by price-gouging renters, transportation users, and utility customers. • This collection documents step-by-step the investigation which uncovered the true history of Monopoly® and punctured the false history of the game.

  • Sharknerd-Opoly
Shark Movie Nerds × Monopoly = Sharknerd-opoly Notes from the Game's Creator What Inspired the Creation of “Sharknerd-opoly?” For over four decades, following the 1975 release of Steven Spielberg's film “Jaws” many different shark films have been produced. The Asylum, an independent film company has brought to life films depicting scenes featuring shark infested tornadoes in “Sharknado,” the vicious take down of a plane, and the Mecha Shark submarine of the “Mega Shark” series. Many shark B-movies such as these have been made as a parody of monster movies. Currently, during the time of Sharknerd-opoly's production, Germany is working on a project entitled “Sky Sharks,” a film in which zombie Nazi soldiers and their modified flying war sharks are revived in the present era. Last year, in 2018, Jason Statham famous for his action movie roles starred in the marine adventure shark film “The Meg,” which brought in over $530.2 Million at the box office. In 2017, acknowledging the love of shark movie fans, our company proposed the idea of a special event, the “Tokyo International Shark Film Festival” to help further popularize shark films worldwide. Following that sentiment, we endeavored to produce a game where players could experience the thrill and suspense of shark films. ▲Tokyo International Shark Film ▲Tokyo International Shark Film Festival 2017 Winter Festival 2018 Spring Why Use Monopoly as a Base? Monopoly is known worldwide as a capital acquisition board game where players buy and sell property placed around the board, while drawing cards to turn luck in their favor and gain special opportunities.
