PRINCIPAL’S 2020-2021 MESSAGE

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Community Members: We are so pleased with the programs and extra-curricular activities we are able to offer at Tofield School, including athletics, Foods, Construction Tech., Drama, Art, Esthetics, Cosmetology, Outdoor Education and Leadership. Being a relatively small multi-grade school provides us with unique opportunities to get to know students on a personal level and to support them in their learning from Grade 5 through to Grade 12. The mentorship opportunities are remarkable, and we are very excited to continue the work on our three-year plan to improve and grow. We are a well-established administration team. I want you to know that you are in very capable hands. Tofield is a great choice for any family/student, and the data we have looked at supports this. The staff has done an incredible job in ensuring that students have achieved their academic goals. That said, we have some lofty goals that we are bursting to share with you! Please come to Parent Council meetings, or call me at school to arrange a meeting if you wish to know more. We have a strong, talented, and committed staff! We are so EXCITED to show the community of Tofield just how amazing our students can be, and we look forward to contributing to both schools in Tofield and to supporting the entire community. We will be engaging with many stakeholders and including them in our mission. Please browse through our website to find out more about our school. If you have any questions, or would like additional information, please contact us at 780-662-3133. On behalf of the staff, I wish everyone a successful and enjoyable year at Tofield School. Level One – Proactive Behaviour Education Plans At Tofield School, we believe in taking a proactive approach to behaviour to build a strong foundation for students to set them on a path towards success. A large part of this foundation is formed by structuring our Student Code of Conduct on key virtues which were identified as a result of our moral intelligence program. The Student Code of Conduct gives students, parents, and staff a clear guide for expected behaviours and ensures that everyone involved begins working from an informed position. The school community works together in many ways to continue to reinforce positive behaviour expectations, and some of these are listed below: • Student Code of Conduct (see attached) is discussed with students and referred to as teachable moments arise. • Appropriate behaviours are modelled by school staff, and role modelling is also encouraged in students when they interact across the grades or act as representatives of our school. • Students’ Union plans a variety of spirit days and activities aimed at developing a sense of pride and belonging in our school. • A school newsletter is sent home monthly to keep parents and community members informed of school activities and invite their participation in relevant events. • Whenever possible, partnerships with outside agencies are pursued to offer specific programming for target groups of students - for example, the RIGHT Choices, and Roots of Empathy. • Training opportunities are provided to staff in the areas of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid. • Outdoor supervisors are encouraged to wear bright vests so that they are highly visible on the playgrounds and readily accessible.

Level Two – Staff Intervention As incidents arise, students are reminded of appropriate behaviour expectations and reference to the Student Code of Conduct may be made. If a student disregards these reminders and fails to behave in a respectful manner, then staff may choose to implement any number of appropriate interventions, some of which may include a phone call home: • 1st offence: Teacher to deal with • 2nd offence: Administration • 3rd offence: Think Tank (supervisor to work with students on ways to prevent future incidents.) ⁃ 1st Think Tank – 1 noon hour ⁃ 2nd Think Tank- 3 noon hours

*For all major incidents, staff will contact the parent/guardian. Staff members are encouraged to document students’ behaviours.

Level Three – Student Advocacy Counsellor and/or Administrative Intervention Our Student Advocacy Counsellor (SAC) is an integral part of our school’s behavioural pyramid of interventions and has a role at each of the three levels. The SAC is actively involved in offering proactive programs such as small group sessions focused on social skill development and classroom presentations on Moral Intelligence. She also provides one-on-one therapeutic counselling, and is available to see drop-ins as needed. If students are not responding appropriately to staff interventions, then they may need to be referred to the SAC or to administration. The following interventions may need to be pursued: • The SAC and administrative team will review Think Tanks and Events Tracking and any students with an excessive amount of entries may have their information printed off and sent home. A phone call and a letter will accompany their activity tracking report. • 1st offence -1/2 day In School Suspension (ISS), and meet with SAC to make a preventative plan to avoid moving to the next level. • 2nd offence -1-day ISS. • 3rd offence – 1-day Out of School Suspension (OSS), 3-day OSS, 5-day OSS ⁃ after each Out of School Suspension, parents and student must meet with administration. • Take further disciplinary action as warranted, and/or move for expulsion. The administration reserves the right to deal with serious behaviour issues on an individual basis according to BRSD policies.

Academic Pyramid of Interventions

The staff at Tofield School believe that all students can learn. This belief is framed by the understanding that some students will need certain interventions to ensure their success.

Level One – Proactive Planning ● Engaging and Connecting with Students through a variety of Instructional Approaches and Initiatives ● Communicating with Students and Parents

The staff at Tofield School remain committed to the process of learning to better address the diverse learning needs of their students. They work together in school and/or division level Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to extend and support one another throughout this process. Improving student achievement is key. A critical component of this is timely and effective communication with both students and parents. These are some of our focus areas:

o PLCs at the school level will continue to explore effective instructional strategies and examine assessment, as both are key focus areas. o Currently some staff are working with division specialists in the area of Fine Arts, and Leadership. o Staff are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for professional development that are provided through the Learning Network. o PAT/SLA and PDE results are analyzed, and plans are put in place to deal with any concerns. o Early Literacy and Reading Intervention programs provide support to Division One and Two students in developing literacy skills. o Progress reports are sent home in between formal reporting periods to keep parents informed about their child’s progress. o Parent-teacher interviews are held in November and March o ISP’s will be reviewed and signed three times a year; coordinated by the Learning Coach o Staff work together with parents and students to develop Individual Program Plans (IPPs) for students with special needs. o Where appropriate, Educational Assistants (EAs) offer support and guidance for students to help them meet with success. o Teaching staff will be available for at least 15 minutes after the last bell.
