3 Speedglas™ ProTop Addendum to Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening User Instructions

• This is an addendum to the User Instructions for the Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Welding Helmets. Both the User Instructions and this addendum include important warnings and use limitations that must be read and understood before using any 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding System. Failure to do so may result in sickness or death. • Do not use any welding product without appropriate training. For proper use, see supervisor or User Instructions or call 3M in U.S.A.1-800-243-4630. In Canada, call Technical Service at 1-800-267-4414. Failure to do so may result in sickness or death. • Always wear ANSI Z87.1-2003 compliant safety spectacles in addition to any welding . Failure to do so may result in permanent eye injury and vision loss. In Canada, follow CSA Z94.3 and/or the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction in your region. • Do not use with parts or accessories other than those manufactured by 3M as described in these User Instructions or on the NIOSH approval label for this respirator. Failure to do so may result in sickness or death. • Make no modifications to the ProTop shell or suspension. Improper use may result in serious injury or death. If the safety is subject to an impact, replace immediately. • Do not use strong solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons or ketones to clean the shell. These solvents can cause deterioration to the shell's ability to withstand impact and penetration. Use of these solvents for cleaning may adversely affect product performance and result in serious injury or death.

GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION

Intended Use This addendum is applicable to 3M™ Speedglas™ welding helmets equipped with the ProTop welding hard system. The Speedglas ProTop welding system meets ANSI Z89.1-2003, Type I requirements and ANSI Z87.1- 2003 for eye & face high impact protection. The ProTop must be used with a Speedglas™ 9000 or 9002 series auto-darkening welding filter (ADF) installed.

The key to the Speedglas ProTop system is the exclusive pivot mechanism that connects the welding helmet to the hard hat. This pivot mechanism has two sets of axes: one to lift the welding helmet away from the ’s face, and another axis to “nest” the welding helmet down low over the hard hat, in a balanced, secure position.

Adjustment of ProTop Hard Hat Suspension To adjust the circumference of the Speedglas ProTop suspension, put the hard hat on and turn the ratchet knob until it fits comfortably and securely. Users with small heads can further reduce the circumference by carefully pulling the strap to separate the two pins from the “L” holes; the two pins can then be re-installed into the two “S” holes (Fig 1). If necessary, users can also adjust the height or front/back position of the relative to the top straps (Fig 2). The same adjustment setting must be used on all four tabs to keep the hard hat horizontal.

Assembly The procedure for installing a replacement Speedglas ProTop welding shield with pivot mechanism is as follows: • Align the strap with the base of the pivot mechanism. The two surfaces will fit together when in the correct position (Fig 3). • Place one edge of the strap under the two corresponding retaining tabs on the base of the pivot mechanism. Squeeze the strap to engage the retaining tabs on the other side (Fig 4). • Slide the front brim of the hard hat into the fold at the front of the strap. Hook the metal buckle to the back edge of the hard hat and lock the buckle (Fig 5).

Hard Hat Maintenance All components should be checked each day before wearing to ensure there are no major surface defects such as crazing, cracks, deep scour marks, discoloration or dents to the shell. Give particular attention to the suspension attachment slots. Immediately replace any headgear that is damaged or soiled. If the shell shows any signs of damage, immediately replace it with a new hard hat. Clean all components with a mild soap and warm water only. Abrasive cleaners or solvents must not be used.

Storage Hard should be stored in a cool, dry, protected location, out of direct sunlight.
