Huntingdonshire District Council By-election in Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots With the surge in support of the Brexit Party the Euro On the day, the Liberal Democrat candidate, Sarah Wilson elections and the Peterborough By-Election, it’s sensible to received 929 votes, while Paula came in second, polling keep an eye on party fortunes in the lead up to local 666. candidate, Nigel Pauley finished council elections in May 2020, or a national election if with 333 votes. Turnout was just under 28 per cent, down sooner. on the vote last year when 34.3 per cent of the electorate went to the polling station.

Reflecting on the result, Paula said: “Even though I did not win, I feel I achieved something by making the Liberal Democrats sit up and be accountable. Whilst they have been dominant in the area, holding the County Council seat, the 3 District Council seats and taking up seats on the Town and Parish Councils, they have been complacent and not done much. Now they will have to deliver or else they will have egg on their faces.”

After Paula’s strong campaign, the Liberal Democrats had to pledge much of what she had campaigned on, particularly on planning and development issues. Paula had also focussed on improving roads and on a more visible police presence in the area.

On 1st August there was a by-election in Huntingdonshire District Council. The sitting Liberal Democrat Councillor, David Underwood, representing Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots Ward stood down on health grounds.

Paula Sparling, standing as our Conservative candidate, fought a very creditable campaign. Paula said: "I was proud to have served as a Town Councillor and Deputy Mayor in Godmanchester in the past and I wanted to ensure Godmanchester residents had a Conservative voice on the District Council. Until this by-election, three Liberal Democrats had represented Godmanchester and Hemingford Abbots, elected on the same platform with the same values and the same vision for the area. I wanted to give local residents the opportunity to take a different, Conservative path.” As for her future, Paula is not downhearted by coming second: “Personally, I do not intend to give up at this stage or any time in the future and will be there to help the Conservatives locally and hopefully have an opportunity to stand again, in order to make a difference.”

Recent polls have shown a “Boris Bounce” for our party and there is no doubt that the change of Prime Minister and Cabinet has gone down well with the voters. We remain in a precarious time, however, and what is certain is that when the next election is called, we all need to be prepared to support our candidates - Peterborough City Elections are particularly important as the Conservative Group only hold a majority thanks to the Werrington Independents, and should there be a national election we all need to support both Shailesh Vara and in their campaigns to deliver a Conservative government. 4 EVENTS

NEWS FROM THE POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER The shocking murder of PC Andrew Harper in the Thames Valley force reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice serving officers can make. - The Police are particularly vulnerable, considering that they are often running towards the trouble most of us run away from, and go into situations where the risk of injury or worse is never far away. We rarely get the chance to thank our police officers and staff for the work they do to keep us safe. The important work of making sure the service is accountable to the public continues, however, and the Commissioner takes care to make sure that he is accessible to residents who seek a one-to-one meeting with him to discuss a problem they have with policing response to local crime and anti-social behaviour. .
