  • John Dight and His Descendants
    10 JOHN DIGHT AND HIS DESCENDANTS by the President, Norman S. Pixley C.M.G., M.B.E., V.R.D., Kt.O.N., F.R. Hist. S.Q. Read at the Annual Meeting of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland 22 September 1977 It is 176 years since John Dight came to Australia. From the time this early pioneer first received a grant of land at Richmond on the Hawkesbury River, he and members of his family extended their holdings north to the Mclntyre River on the border of what is now Queensland and as far south as the River Yarra. John Dight was born in Axminister, Devon on 24 March 1772 and arrived in Sydney as a surgeon in the Earl Cornwallis on 10 June 1801. He was accompanied by his wife Hannah and their infant daughter Sarah, who had been born the previous year. He was appointed surgeon to the Governor Philip Gidley King and a document still in the possession of descendants shows he was permitted the right of private practice also, at a charge of 2/6d per patient. There is, however, no record of his practising his profession in this regard, as Dight fairly early obtained a position in the Commissariat Department until he received a grant of land at Richmond. The farm, which was called "Durham Bowes" was situated on the river at Mulgrave. In James Steele's "Early Days of Windsor" John Dight's name appears as one of the signatories in 1807 to an address presented by "Holders of landed estates and principal inhabitants of the Hawkesbury, Portland, Richmond and neighbouring districts" to Governor Bligh, thanking him for his "unbounded attention to the district and the Colony at large in the dreadful crisis in which he found it".

It’s one of the oldest surviving rural houses in Yass. The beautiful heritage listed site features an intact complex of buildings, some constructed of handmade bricks. Elaine is a glass artist who makes items such as platters, bowls, vases and jewellery that are displayed and offered for sale in a gallery located in part of her home. The gallery is open from Thursday to Tuesday from 9 am to 5.30 pm. Due to the high temperatures, specialised equipment and length of time to produce the glass items, the workshop, which is adjacent to the gallery, is not open to visitors.

    The Otemon Journal of Australian Studies, vol. ῑ῎,pp.῏ΐ῏ ῌ ῏῔ῐ, ῐ῎῎ῒ ῌ῍ῌ Function and Exterior Design of Verandaed Colonial Houses in New South Wales Miki Watanabe Ashikaga Institute of Technology ῌ ῌ Purpose and Methods Verandaed houses are the most “Australian” of all colonialῌtime architecture, re- flecting distinct characteristics closely associated with its climate and environments. We certainly get the impression looking at the exterior views. And in Australia, Ve- randaed colonial house have acquired their originality through gradual development. Although Australians have been active in conducting research, measurement sur- veys, and renovation or conservation of historic buildings+῍, few analysis have been done comparing specific case examples. Thus it is important in the sense that we reῌdiscover the identity of colonial houses in Australia, which has been generally overlooked. This is a study on houses of the early colonial period ῌbetween ῏῕ and ῏ΐ῎῍ in New South Wales. The purpose of this study is to clarify their specific charac- teristics from the following key points : ῏ ῍ To analyze the role of the veranda by classifying floor plan shapes based on how verandas are connected to the main building. ῐ ῍ To analyze the role of exterior design by classifying roof style based on the relationship between house and veranda. For the analysis subjects, I used ῒ῏ case examples of verandaed houses from a ῏ ῍ Dr. James Broadbent remarked in his doctoral thesis “Aspect of Domestic Architectures in NSW ῏῕ ῌ ῏ῒῑ” on the characteristic examples of Australian colonial houses : The main conditions are French doors, smallῌscale, symmetry, hipped roof, oneῌstory building, sin- gle housing, a mildlyῌinclined roof, the building unified with the veranda roof or roof of the main house and minimum use of decoration.
