Out of the hottest afternoon sun seems to suit it best for foliage color. Can take a bit of drought, but best with a little summer water. Takes will to pruning. Frost hardy in USDA zone 2. 1g @ $12, 2g @ $22 Rosaceae Rosa glauca red leaf rose Grown as much for its foliage as its flowers this deciduous shrub, to 6 ft tall x 5 ft wide, has glaucous blue foliage and, in June, single pink flowers with white centers. Lovely rose hips follow and remain through the winter. -

The author seeks to show how a bridge can be established between these two concepts, which may at first appear distant, by focusing on certain under-discussed aspects of rites of passage. He argues that the ‘liminal’ phase of rites of passage is tied to the ambiguity brought about through the isolation and individualization of the initiate. -

The guiding A method for these new academic areas was positivism, the belief that cov- ering laws of human organization could be discovered through direct observation. This perspective maintains that the universe is orderly, and the job of scientific inquiry is to discover this order and classify it in systematic ways. Charles Darwin’s work on evolution was an important model for researchers in the social sciences who searched for origins in the “evolution” of culture. Theories of the evolution of culture are interwoven with the study of religion. Three schools of theory emerged in the nineteenth century—myth and ritual, soci- ological, and psychological—all asking the question, Did religion originate in myth or ritual? Mircea Eliade was interested in the phenomenology of religious experi- ence and how myths and rituals are expressions of both the sacred and the profane in culture that provide unity for people. The sociological school, led by Emile Durkheim, maintained that religion is a social creation whose function is to pre- serve the welfare of a society. Sigmund Freud anchored the psychological approach: taboos of incest and patricide necessitate rituals that appease repressed desires. Across these approaches, performance was studied for its window into larger cultural structures, like religion, politics, economics, language, and identity (Beeman 1993). When specific performance genres were studied (like rites, rituals, games, contests, dance, and music), performance was often seen as a fixed, static product, evidence of cross-cultural similarities, and indicative of universal needs and expressions. -

RESEARCH REPORt 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Cover: Aurora borealis paintings by William Crowder, National Geographic (1947). The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Aurorae became the center of interest for the big science of powerful rockets, complex satellites and large group efforts to understand the magnetic and charged particle environment of the earth. The auroral visoplot displayed here provided guidance for recording observations in a standardized form, translating the sublime aesthetics of pictorial depictions of aurorae into the mechanical aesthetics of numbers and symbols. Since its foundation in 1994 the MPIWG has investigated fundamental questions of the history of knowl- edge from the Neolithic to the present. The focus has been on the history of the natu- ral sciences, but recent projects have also integrated the history of technology and the history of the human sciences into a more panoramic view of the history of knowl- edge. A modern kartográfiában az általános térképeket a tematikussal vetik össze, utóbbit a topográfia térképen alapuló, később kifejlődött típusnak tartják. A tanulmány kétségbe vonja ezt az elfogadott nézetet és történeti megközelítést javasol. A tematikus probléma megoldásához a kartográfiát különböző térképezési módok együtteseként kell felfogni. A tematikus térképészeti mód az európai Felvilágosodás idején rohamosan fejlődött, de a kezdetek és a korai története homályos. Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658–1730), a művelt olasz gróf a török háborúk idején katonai térképészként szolgált Magyarországon. Marsigli tudományos érdeklődésének középpontjában a Duna állt. Az 1699-es karlócai békeszerződés után a Habsburg–Ottomán határvonal kijelö- lését és térképezését irányította. Johann Christoph Müller segítségével tematikus térképeket készített: számos térképet a határvonalról, és különleges témákat bemutató mappákat (kereskedelmi, postai, járványügyi). A kézi- ratos térképek a nyomtatott tematikus térképek, diagramok és metszetek előfutárai voltak, amelyek a gazdagon illusztrált, hat kötetes monográfiában, a Danubius Pannonico Mysicus-ban jelentek meg (1726). Az első kötet földrajzi része (általános és részletes) hidrográfia térképeket, a történelmi kötet a római emlékeket bemutató régészeti térképeket tartalmaz. A Duna-monográfia harmadik kötete az első bányászati atlasznak tekinthető. Marsigli tematikus térképész volt, akinek azonban saját maga számára alaptérképeit is el kellett készítenie. Ez a fő oka annak, amiért nem tematikus térképészként, hanem az ország pontosabb, felmérésen alapuló általános térképe szerzőjeként tartják számon. -

Abstract Victorian Egyptology and the Making of a Colonial Field Science, 1850-1906 Meira Gold This dissertation provides a new account of the origins of archaeological fieldwork in the Nile Delta. It considers how practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds circulated knowledge about the built environment of pharaonic ruins: monuments, architecture, burials, and soil mounds that remained in situ. I trace the development of Egyptology from an activity that could be practiced long-distance through a network of informants to one that required first-hand field experience.
