NEWS RELEASE October22, 2017 World Series Includes Plenty of Philippe's History Los Angeles, CA— For years, the tradition of a French Dip Sandwich and Dodger baseball have gone hand-in-hand. Generations of fans have made a tradition out of stopping at Philippe's before heading to the ball park, and now that the Dodgers are in the World Series there is plenty of L.A. history to be shared. Saw dust floors, pay phones and French Dips hold as much meaning to Angelenos as Vin Scully, Roger the Peanut Man and Chavez Ravine. It's been 30 years since the memories merged in the perfect way, and with the Dodgers in the World Series, the only thing better would be a ring. Baseball and Philippe's aficionados know how to kick off games with tap beer and great food as the restaurant overflows in Dodger blue with chants of "Let's Go Dodgers!" The line-up of French Dips; beef, lamb, pork, ham, turkey and Pastrami is as talked about as the starting Dodger line-up on game day. Some critics and foodies have recognized Philippe's as a great place to eat, both before and after games, and in some cases second to only the Dodger Dog as a game day meal. In 2018, Philippe's will celebrate 110 years, and for over half of those years, the tradition of French Dips have been coupled with Dodger baseball. Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu and is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California. In 1918, Mathieu dropped a sliced French roll into the roasting pan filled with juice from the hot oven and the rest is history. No Contest The Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up By Chris Brown and Casey Shearer It s the latter half of September, which means the fall breezes are blowing and the leaves are changing. The smell of hot-dogs and stale beer is in the air; everybody wants peanuts and Crackerjacks; children run home from school and head to the sandlot. All of which are symptoms of pennant fever. Or at least they should be. But as we look around, nobody seems to care about baseball at all. In what is usually the most exciting time of the year for baseball fans, that special excitement is somehow absent. Even as Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. chase Babe Ruth and Roger Maris, and Larry Walker chases the triple crown, something is missing: What's missing, kosher hot-dogs? A players? strike? Roy Hobbs? Steve Howe and his crack? The Cubbies? Has baseball become so unpopular so as to lose the interest of all its fans? Is it just that baseball lacks that type of hype, flashy color and big-money that basketball purports or the bone crushing thrills of football? No, what's missing are those heated races that lead to a bad case of pennant fever. With less than two weeks remaining in the season, the playoff picture is all but set in stone. In the American League, Baltimore owns the East, Cleveland looks to have the Central wrapped up, Seattle should win the West barring a major collapse, and the Bronx Bombers have sewn up the wild card.

Lasorda’s Baseball Wit The baseball season has wound down, the postseason gets under way tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 2), and the 2018 World Series will begin on Oct. 23. It’s celebration time for baseball fans everywhere. One of the most colorful characters in all of baseball is Tommy Lasorda, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who is best known for his two decades as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This year, he marked his 69th season in one capacity or another with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers organization – the longest tenure anyone has had with the team, edging Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully (now retired) by three seasons. Lasorda was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 1997. If there was a spot in that hall for wit and wisdom, he could land there, too. Here are some samples of his quotes: • My theory of hitting was just to watch the ball as it came in and hit it. • The only way I’d worry about the weather is if it snows on our side of the field and not theirs. • When we win, I’m so happy I eat a lot.
