Palabras clave: comunicación, Second Life, mundos virtuales, identidad, representación, tiempo, espacio, producción de sentido.

  • Ubiquitous Computing, Virtual Worlds, and the Displacement of Property Rights
Ubiquitous Computing, Virtual Worlds, and the Displacement of Property Rights M. ScoT BOONE* Abstract: Examining one emerging technology, virtual worlds, may provide us with insight about another emerging technology, ubiquitous computing. The rapid increase in both the popularity and economic value of virtual worlds has resulted in a conflict over whether players in these worlds have any property rights with respect to virtual world objects associated with their avatars. A close examination however reveals that even if such rights exist, they can be overridden through the combined use of contract and technology. This observation may in turn provide an insight about the future of real world property. The emerging technology of ubiquitous computing shares technological characteristics with virtual worlds such that ubiquitous computing would make a displacement of property rights in real world objects possible in the same way that virtual world technology makes such a displacement possible for potential property rights in virtual world objects. • Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight #1 Is Created Using Original Characters in the City of Heroes Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game
1st Issue! Paragon City: the City of Heroes! The only place in the world where the hero-to-problem ratio is almost one-to-one. If you need a hero in this city, you just have to look around the corner. But not all heroes are the same. Some are more mercenary than the others. But there are some who see the calling as a sign of brighter days ahead for all mankind. These are the heroes who fight for something better. They are the... In 2007, Paragon City was infested with breaches from another universe. Fearing another Rikti invasion, or something worse, members of the Vanguard along with Positron from the Freedom Phalanx moved quickly to contain the breaches. But instead of an invasion, the tears in reality deposited several injured beings from another universe. Bart Wallace , Jason Rich , and Karen Powers all came from a world that was violently torn apart by an extra-dimensional madman. By circumstance or by cosmic design, they were spared oblivion and instead arrived in the Paragon Universe. Their wounds were eventually healed, but they discovered they were heroes without a home and little memory of who they once were. They each took on new names that reflected their nature. Bart became Ryder Lightning , Jason became MidKnight X , and Karen became Galatea Powers . They learned their powers had also changed, some making them more powerful than ever. To help them assimilate in our society, Captain Paragonna invited them to join the Guardians of the Dawn . Galatea also discovered that her cousin, Icon Powers , originally believed missing from her own world, had also come across to the Paragon Universe after battling an all-powerful extra-dimensional darkness.

Drawing on the disciplines of library and information studies and archival studies, this study seeks to explore the production of information in online videogame communities and to elucidate how such insights can offer practical and conceptual support to the knotty issue of how to preserve those sociocultural aspects of videogames that exist 'beyond' the code and audiovisual data resources of the videogame itself. This is accomplished in two principal moves: (i) by delving into the current state of socioculturally-focused videogame preservation and; (ii) by inquiring into the production of information carried out by videogame communities in what arguably is one of their most important interfaces of interaction—discussion forums, wikis, and other social-media services.

  • Play and Punishment: the Sad and Curious Case of Twixt
Play and punishment, p. 1 Play and Punishment: The Sad and Curious Case of Twixt As an academic field of study, sociology turns largely on a single question: How do social groups create and maintain social order? Conventionally, structural-functionalist models, from Auguste Comte forward, have assigned the construction of social order and the maintenance of social norms to mass society as a whole, particularly to the mass communication functions of mass society. There remains great controversy, however, over the details of this social ordering process. Social conflict theorists have understood social order as an imposition on human desires and needs, exemplified by the dystopic predictions of the Frankfurt school (Adorno, 1991; Marcuse 1964). Social evolutionists have posited the inevitability of increasingly larger social organizations governed by natural law. Social constructionist theorists (Berger and Luckmann, 1966; Erikson, 2002) have emphasized the variability of individual behavior within dynamic social contexts and refocused concern from the essentials to the pragmatics of social structures and structurings. Yet, while each of these different models of social organization assigns different values to social rules and order, all assume these rules and order a necessary component of increasingly larger and more complex organizations. One of the great difficulties in selecting among these models, then, lies in determining exactly what the rules of social order are. Particularly in the case of large organizations, social rules are more often assumed than empirically verified, and, when close scrutiny and detailed measurements are attempted, these find a great deal of subjectivity in the individual interpretation and enactment of supposedly commonly held values and beliefs.
