This is the twenty-second year of the Annual in the book format. This year we’re looking at realignment, and all the conse- quences; more than half of the teams in our league have changed addresses. There are new rivalries and new configurations, and thus new story lines for our magazine. Our most senior manager brings us a great historical overview of our previous divi- sions and pennant races – how we came to our present arrangement. For our veteran managers, it’s a walk down memory lane; for our newer friends, it’s evidence of the depth and strength of our league. A brief apology: time and gaps in knowledge have forced us to skip over the playoff descriptions this year. There were two epic series that went seven games, both men- tioned in Year in Review articles: Melrose came within one key pitch of going to the World Series instead of Munich; and Maracaibo took Las Vegas in seven games before bowing to the Marauders.

Astros Daily Clips Wednesday, September 21, 2016 Astros win in 10, continue Wild Card ascent By Rick Eymer and Brian McTaggart / MLB.com OAKLAND -- The Astros are surging just at the right time. George Springer shot a single up the middle in the 10th inning to score Tony Kemp, who had doubled off Sean Doolittle, from third base to send the Astros to their fifth win in their last six games, 2-1, over the A's on Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. "I understood I just had to hit it through the infield somehow," Springer said. "Just like I was taught before, you find a way and help the team." In a game in which Jose Altuve collected his 200th hit of the season, the Astros moved to within two games of the Orioles for the second spot in the American League Wild Card race with 11 games remaining, staying one-half game behind the Tigers and moving one game ahead of the Mariners. Relief pitcher Chris Devenski got the win in relief with 3 2/3 perfect innings, and Ken Giles stranded the bases loaded for his 13th save. "We played well," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "We fight until the end, we play our 27 outs, 30 outs, 33 outs -- whatever it was going to take, we were going to play 'til the end. Our guys understand where we're at on the calendar. We've played important games lately. They're playing very loose and certainly want to spoil some seasons, so it sets up to be a very intense playoff atmosphere game." Astros starter Joe Musgrove and A's starter Sean Manaea were locked in a scoreless battle through five innings before Oakland pushed a run across in the sixth on a bases-loaded grounder off the bat of Stephen Vogt.

  • Playing Major League Baseball Is the Culmination of a Long and Arduous Journey for Pitcher Ariel Miranda
DREAM REALIZED Playing Major League Baseball is the culmination of a long and arduous journey for pitcher Ariel Miranda. By Mike Gastineau For Ariel Miranda it was just one more hurdle. The 28-year-old Cuban joined the Mariners at the trade deadline last summer from the Orioles and became a reliable starting pitcher, posting a 5-2 record in 10 starts in August and September. He had every reason to believe he would be a starter for the team in 2017. But in baseball things seldom stay the same. The off- season additions of pitchers Drew Smyly and Yovani Gallardo, combined with the presence of Felix Her- nandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and James Paxton meant Miranda had to have a great spring to crack the team’s starting rotation. Instead, he struggled. There was talk of moving him to the bullpen, but eventually the Mariners decided they’d rather have him continue as a starter, so he was sent to Triple-A Tacoma. “He was really let down and disappoint- ed,” said pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. “He’s in his first spring with us and is com- peting for a job and didn’t really do anything wrong. The guys who we thought were going to be in our rotation were healthy so we didn’t have a spot for him.” Miranda admits the news frustrated him, but frustration is something he’s had to learn to deal with in his circuitous journey to Major League Baseball. Pursuing a Passion Born in 1989 in Havana, Cuba, Mi- randa doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t playing baseball.

The 2018 TBL Annual 3 the TBL baseball annual Welcome to the 2018 TBL Baseball Annual. This is the twenty-third year of the Annual in the book format. This year we’re looking at what we call The New Normal: hitting cards, and offenses, based on power with lots of strikeouts. One of our most insightful colleagues, Joe Auletta, gives us some excellent analysis on how things have already changed and what we should make of it all. Our usual features are mostly here, but we don’t have the Vegas Line this year due to our friend and colleague Paul Harrington’s illness. We hope to have it back next year. Enjoy the Annual and enjoy the season. Walter, Robert, Mark June, 2018 The T.Q. System Shamelessly stolen from the Mazeroski annual, the T.Q. System assigns points to each area of the team’s expected performance and totals the result.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 2017 A FIRST HALF TO REMEMBER Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale fanned 10 batters in a win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. The dominant left-hander now has 146 strikeouts on the season over his 15 starts, including 10 games with at least 10 strikeouts. The 28-year-old Florida native is now 9-3 on the season with a 2.85 ERA over 107.1 innings pitched, setting up a likely sixth All-Star Game selection. According to Elias, since the mound was set at its current distance in 1893, the only other pitchers to reach 10 double-digit strikeout games in as few games into a season as Sale were Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez in 1999 (also 15th game) and Randy Johnson in 2000 (12th game) and 2001 (14th game). With just over two weeks remaining before the All-Star break, Sale has a chance to reach the 170-strikeout plateau within the season’s fi rst half. That has not been accomplished since teammates Curt Schilling (186) and Johnson (171) both did so in 2002. Overall, the feat has been done just 20 times in MLB history by 11 diff erent pitchers. Seven of the 11 pitchers are currently in the Hall of Fame. Sale would become the third Boston pitcher to accomplish the feat, joining Roger Clemens (1988) and Martinez (1999). Pitchers with at Least 170 Strikeouts Before the All-Star Break, MLB History Player, Team Season Strikeouts W-L ERA Nolan Ryan, CAL 1977 234 13-8 2.64 Nolan Ryan, CAL 1973 233 11-12 2.84 Randy Johnson, ARI 1999 211 9-7 2.95 Randy Johnson, ARI 2001 202 11-5 2.71 Sandy
