South Park is a popular culture artifact that deals with numerous contemporary social and political issues. A narrative analysis of nine episodes of the show finds multiple themes. First, South Park is successful in creating a polysemous political message that allows audiences with varying political ideologies to relate to the program. Second, South Park ’s universal appeal is in recurring populist themes that are anti-hypocrisy, anti-elitism, and anti- authority. Third, the narrative functions to develop these themes and characters, setting, and other elements of the plot are representative of different ideologies. Finally, this study concludes -

ABSTRACT Arab American Racialization and its Effect oniAmerican Islamophobiaa in the United States Catherine Haseman Director: Dr. Lisa Lacy, Ph.D. Over the past few years, anti-Muslim and anti-Arab rhetoric and discrimination has surged. Prejudice against Arabs and Muslims has moved from the fringes of American society to the mainstream. The American Islamophobic discourse is so deeply rooted in U.S. history, culture, and society that we often misunderstand its origins as well as its manifestations. This paper proposes a critical dialogue about how to understand one contested concept (Islamophobia) by using another contested one (racialization). This paper seeks to understand if--and if so, to what extent--racialization is central to understanding America’s pernicious brand of Islamophobia. In addition to reviewing the historical connection between racialization and Islamophobia, this paper analyzes the results of a survey of Texans’ views of Islam and Muslims. The survey results are used to understand how racialized conceptions of Arab Muslims correspond with Islamophobic tropes. Matthews JM*, Petrykowski B and Davidorf F Havener Eye Institute, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, USA Abstract Background: The use of topical anesthesia in the outpatient setting by Ophthalmologists has seen a dramatic increase since the development of antivegf medications. Each year, there are an estimated 6-7 million anti-vegf injections performed in the United States. People with red hair have a mutation of the MC1R gene, which has been associated with decreased effectiveness of local anesthesia. The purpose of this communication is to alert the ophthalmology community of potential for inadequate anesthesia for intraocular injections Methods: IRB was obtained through OSU IRB. 175 patients receiving intravitreal injections were randomly surveyed to determine incidence of poor analgesia with injections. Results: Overall, 19/175 patients were found to have decreased effectiveness of local anesthesia. We found a surprisingly high incidence (10.5%) of patients who require increased amounts of local anesthesia than is commonly used in those with natural red/auburn hair. Conclusion: We encourage ophthalmologists who use local anesthesia for their patients to include an assessment of their response to dental anesthesia. These individuals need to be identified who have had previously bad experiences with poor responses to local anesthesia. We recommend using twice the amount of topical anesthesia in these patients. REDHEADEDNESS AS AN EMBODIED TROPE Morgan Lee Thornburg The study of redheadedness has been largely neglected in the academic community and beyond. Besides a few outdated psychology studies, pop culture books, a handful of student theses, and one dissertation, there has been little investigation regarding how the tropes associated with redheadedness—namely, weakness and unattractiveness in men and unruliness and hypersexuality in women—become embodied. This project considers the way that such tropes are internalized in a variety of “texts”: Scott P. Harris’s documentary, Being Ginger; Marion Roach’s and Jacky Colliss Harvey’s personal narratives; and Tim Minchin’s song (and performance of) “Prejudice,” together with an interview he gave for The Guardian. Using Krista Ratcliffe’s method of rhetorical listening, I reveal the ways that these texts identify and disidentify with redheadedness. Despite the authors’ awareness of redhead-related stereotypes, these texts continue to perpetuate many of those same stereotypes in subtle and complex ways. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT ....................................................................................................................... -

Language Research Bulletin, 23 , ICU, Tokyo “Talking Race” in University Classes: A Discourse Analytical Approach James W. Tollefson Mai Yamagami Many university classes introduce issues of race and racism – topics that are difficult for some people to discuss openly. The ICU ELP Program, for example, includes challenging readings on race and racism as a focus for class discussion and writing assignments. In this article, we discuss an approach to the analysis of race and racism that can help students apply their critical thinking skills to this important topic. We argue that focusing on the discourse of race offers rich opportunities for class discussion and student writing. Specifically, we summarize critical discourse analysis, particularly its understanding of the concept of “racism,” and we provide suggestions and examples for its use in class. University classes at ICU and elsewhere address profound social, political, cultural and economic issues of race and racism. The ICU English Language Program (ELP), for example, includes six thematic units that form the basis for lessons in reading and writing. The six units are: educational values and critical thinking; reading literature; culture, perception and communication; issues of race; bioethics; and visions of the future. The ELP Reader (ICU English Language Program, 2007) includes core readings for each of these topics. Lessons for the readings focus on content as well as a wide range of reading and writing skills. In this article, we discuss the thematic unit “issues of race” in order to identify some of the challenges facing classes in which race is a major topic. We distinguish explicit (“old”) and implicit (“new”) forms of racism, arguing that implicit forms of racism require a discourse analytical approach to analyzing race. -

It is a structural system, not an event in history. 3. It denies the existence of indigenous people and the legitimacy to claims to land. 4. It claims to vanish indigenous peoples and replace them with settlers. 8 Key Features 5. Its logic of elimination requires the removal of indigenous peoples of a territory, child abduction, religious conversion, reprogramming (via missions or boarding schools; and myriad forms of assimilation. -

The physical descriptions of each character are important to the development of the story. Therefore, it seems that a character’s physical appearance becomes an important part of character development, and his/her physical traits help to determine the type of character he/she will be.
