2/6/2018 Queensland Theatre’s Black is the New White | Review | The Courier-Mail Review: Queensland Theatre production Black is the New White Phil Brown,, Arts Editor, The Courier-Mail February 5, 2018 4:08pm Subscriber only IT’S got F-bombs galore and even the C-word, not to mention full frontal nudity and some very edgy jokes about race relations in Australia. Queensland Theatre’s first production for the this year, a co-pro with Sydney Theatre Company called Black is The New White, is as funny as it is outrageous. Written by Nakkiah Lui and directed by Paige Rattray, it has a cast oozing with diversity and indigenous talent including two of our young Aboriginal superstars – Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell. Tapsell, who we saw in The Sapphires and Love Child made headlines when she gave a rousing Logies speech calling for more diversity on screen and stage and now she’s in a play that exemplifies that. It’s a play that makes jokes that couldn't be made in polite company and deals with racial issues that make people very uncomfortable, usually. It’s all set at Christmas time which is usually when things go to hell, family-wise. Luke Carroll is the narrator. http://www.couriermail.com.au/entertainment/confidential/review-queensland-theatre-production-black-is-the-new-white/news-story/46156f1f58a01… 1/3 2/6/2018 Queensland Theatre’s Black is the New White | Review | The Courier-Mail And it flips stereotypes. I mean here we have an Aboriginal family living in a big mansion. So why shouldn’t they? The wealthy Aboriginal clan of the Gibsons are preparing to welcome the white parents of their daughter’s white boyfriend for Christmas dinner. You can’t help but think of the classic film Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner. The film references don’t stop there because Lui has also channelled National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and even Meet The Fockers. But having said that this play is not derivative and is an entirely original Australian take on a genre, dealing with Australian issues about race and class, the sort of issues that should never be discussed over dinner, particularly Christmas dinner. Shari Sebbens. Ray Gibson is a successful Aboriginal politician and it turns out that his visitor, Dennison Smith (Geoff Morrell), is a former nemesis, something which doesn’t thrill their children — Charlotte Gibson (Sebbens) and young cellist Francis Smith (Tom Stokes) who have watch their families tear each other apart at a time of the year when people should be spreading good cheer. Miranda Tapsell plays the Gibson’s daughter Rose who is married to Bible-basher Sonny Jones (Anthony Taufa) who’s Aboriginality may not be what it seems for fairly obvious reasons. The set – the Gibson’s very comfy mansion – is stunning and Luke Carroll wanders around it as the narrator and calls himself The Spirit of Christmas. Ha! He has a limited amount of narrating to do and, actually, I would have liked to have heard more from him but never mind. http://www.couriermail.com.au/entertainment/confidential/review-queensland-theatre-production-black-is-the-new-white/news-story/46156f1f58a01… 2/3 2/6/2018 Queensland Theatre’s Black is the New White | Review | The Courier-Mail 0:37 / 5:10 Anthony Warlow makes triumphant return in The Wizard of Oz The cast is amazing with Melodie Reynolds-Diarra quite priceless as Joan Gibson and I loved Anthony Taufa who has one of the big reveals of the show. But I can’t tell you what that is or I’d have to kill you. If you're uncomfortable with bad language, discussions involving race, religion, and sex give this play a miss. If you want to see contemporary Australian society laid bare in the most hilarious way, book now for f#!*$’s sake.
