LESSON 8 SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL AIPORTS The map above indicates locations of the major aiports across South Africa. Looking at the international status of South Africa’s major Airports they handle both passengers have a cargo. Passengers are transported in the upper part of an aircraft called CABIN, the passengers luggages /baggages are carried on the belly space of the airline. South African Airways has cargo division where it uses passengers aircraft for cargo and has 4 aircraft that transport cargo only. South Africa has 9 airports that handle international passengers, these international airports have custom and immigration facilities with passport control. 9 SA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS 1. O.R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT--------GAUTENG PROVINCE 2. CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT-------WESTERN CAPE 3. KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT-------KWAZULU NATAL 4. PORT ELIZABETH INTERNATIONAL--------------EASTERN CAPE 5. UPINGTON INTERNATIONAL------------------------NORTHERN CAPE 6. KRUGER NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL-----------MPUMALANGA 7. LANSERIA INTERNATIONAL-------------------------NORTH WEST 8. POLOKWANE INTERNATIONAL--------------LIMPOPO 9. BRAM FISHER INTERNATIONAL------------- FREE STATE In SA the ACSA ( AIRPORT COMPANY OF SA) manages all 9 provincial international airports, it was formed in 1993 when government transferred all airports to ACSA management. It is the largest aiport authority in SA. Below are international airports managed by ACSA: 1. O.R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL O.R is the largest and busiest airport formerly known as Jan Smuts Airport, then changed to be Johannesburg International airport. The name changed to be known as O.R Tambo in 2006. ORTIA abbreved by tourist is an essential part of the transport infrastructure of Gauteng and plays an important role in the economy of Gauteng province and SA as a whole. It handles more than 17 miliion passengers per year. More than 50 international and local airlines fly to and from ORTIA. It has offered more than 18 thousands jobs, and accommodates over 100 airlines that touch base at this airport. It is one of the longest intermnational airport runway in the world. 2. CAPETOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT It is the 3rd largest airport in Africa, has won 2 global awards from the Airport Council International (ACI) for good quality service. It is managed by ACSA, 6 local airlines and 29 international airlines fly to and from CPIA 3. KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT This airport was built in 2010 in preparation for FIFA Soccer World Cup. KSIA handles 5 million passengers per year and is growing massively in numbers of inbound drop in flights, all 6 domestic airlines and 11 international airlines fly to KSIA. This airport is just outside Durban, it is formerly known as Durban international Airport. 4. PORT ELIZABETH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT This airport handles over one million passengers per year, its also an important cargo airport that handles more than 800 tons of cargo annually and plays part in export of agricultural products from the Eastern cape. 6 domestic airlines fly to P.E, the airport has a screen off for complaint international section. This screen section was decided upon and built during 2010 FIFA Soccer world cup. 5. GDEORGE AIRPORT GA is an important national airport for tourist travelling to the popular Garden Route. It handles more than 600 thousand passengers per year. 5 different domestic airlines fly to GA. 6. BRAM FISHER AIRPORT /BLOEMFOMTEIN AIRPORT4 Bram fisher handles nearly 400 thousand passengers per year, 3 domestic airline have scheduled flights to Bloemfontein. The runaway is shared with SANDF ( AIR FORCE BASE) Bloemspruit. 7. EAST LONDON AIRPORT East London Airport handles nearly 350 thousand passengers per year, it is important cargo airport with cargo carried to destination in Europe and South Africa. 8. KIMBERLY AIRPORT KA handles more than 132 000 domestic passengers per year, mostly business related trips. 9. UPINGTON AIRPORT It has a longest runway in the world at 4900m long enough to land a space shuttle. This airport is used by SAA and SAAF to train pilots to fly large aircrafts. The aiport accommodates mainly charter flights, but it is a major international cargo hub serving sub-Saharan Africa. AIRLINES OPERATING IN SOUTH AFRICA 1. SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS 2. SOUTH AFRICAN EXPRESS 3. SA AILINKS and COMAIR BUDGET AIRLINES These are low cost carriers, no frills or discount airlines. These airlines usually have lower fares than fully service airlines,but fewer passengers comfort are included in the price. Budget airlines do not offer meals during flights but passengers can buy meals on board. Some budget airlines do not offer reserved seating or business class seating and seats might be very close together,they might also charge extra for hand luggage taken into aircraft cabin.
