Code Switching used in “NET TV BREAKOUT” Selected Episodes: a Sociolinguistic Analysis (supervised by Prof. Dr. Noer Jihad Saleh, M.A and Dr. Ayub Khan, M.Si.) This thesis is aimed to analyze the types of code switching and reasons to use code switching by the hosts of NET TV BREAKOUT on two selected episodes. Those selected episodes are “Update Musik-Musik Sekarang, Special Guest, Jamiroquai 2017” and “BREAKOUT with Vidi Aldiano”. To attain the objectives of this research, the researcher used library research and field research using note taking method and questionnaire. Library research was performed to obtain theories and information significant to the research. Field research was conducted using note taking method which was carried out during video transcribing process. Questionnaire was given randomly to heterogeneous respondents online by using Google Docs. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. Population and sample of this research were all utterances made by the hosts of NET TV BREAKOUT in two episodes. The researcher took utterances with code switching between Indonesian and English as the samples which were selected using purposive sampling technique. This research revealed two results which are: (1) four types of code switching were made by the hosts in two episodes: Intra-sentential switching (59% of utterances), Inter-sentential switching (18%), Tag switching (14%) and Intra-lexical switching (9%); and (2) four reasons were collected from the questionnaire on why the hosts of NET TV BREAKOUT use code switching: (a) habit, (b) topic, (c) express idea freely, and (d) lack of vocabulary. iii ABSTRAK ABDURRAHMAN SHALEH RELIUBUN. Tesis ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa tipe alih kode dan alasan penggunaan alih kode oleh pembawa acara NET TV BREAKOUT di dua episode terpilih. Episode terpilih tersebut “Update Musik-Musik Sekarang, Special Guest, Jamiroquai 2017” dan “BREAKOUT with Vidi Aldiano”. Untuk memperoleh tujuan dari penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan studi pustaka dan studi lapangan dengan menggunakan metode pengambilan catatan dan kuisioner. Studi pustaka dilakukan untuk memperoleh teori dan informasi yang berkaitan dengan penelitian. Studi lapangan dilakukan dengan metode pengambilan catatan yang dilakukan selama proses transkrip video. Kuisioner diberikan secara acak kepada responden heterogen secara online menggunakan Google Docs. Data kemudian dianalisa dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Populasi dan sampel penelitian ini adalah semua ujaran pembawa acara NET TV BREAKOUT di dua episode. Peneliti mengambil ujaran dengan alih kode Indonesia dan Inggris sebagai sampel yang dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. JUMP: Exploring the cultural phenomenon of Language in Japanese band names Lee, Jackson Koon Yat & A.R.Woollock Abstract In Japan, English-language usage in the public sphere, from advertising through popular music, general media, and signage runs a gamut of uses and accuracies from the intentional and unintentional misuse, to the irreverent and the occasional sublime. This paper sets out to explore and record the use of English in the naming of Japanese pop and rock groups. The central thesis of this essay being that Japanese pop and rock group names fall into five distinct categories or phenomena: meaningless names using language other than Japanese, arbitrary names from second languages, bastardised 'other' language derivatives, Romanised Japanese, and mixed Japanese and other language. This grouping ignores those names rendered in kan-ji, which although acknowledged, are not specifically within the scope of this research. By deconstructing and analysing this use, it is hoped to contribute to discourse in the fields of both culture (cultural appropriation), and language (language use and accuracy).     CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the general outlines of the present study. It begins with background, research question, research significance, definition of key term, and the organization of writing. 1.1 Background Language is human and non-instinctive method of communicating ideas, feelings, and desire by means of a system sounds and sound symbols Hornby (1972:473). Human-language is a system of vocal-auditory communication, interacting with the experiences of its users, employing conventional signs composed of arbitrary patterned sound units and assembled according to set rules. People use language to communicate and interact to each other. It is easier to convey information to another people in order to share knowledge. All features about language are studied in linguistics. Linguistics has four main branches of study: phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. In this thesis, study focuses on semantics. According to Palmer in Aminuddin (1988:15) semantics is „to signify‟ or „make sense‟. He argue that technical term of semantics implies the study of meaning, semantics is part of linguistics. Like sounds and grammar, meaning components also occupy a certain level in the sound of language. The components of grammar (morphology, and syntax cover) occupy the second level, and the component of meaning is the last stage. From the explanation by Aminuddin, semantic is the technical term used to refer the study of meaning, and since meaning is part of language, semantic is part of linguistic. Based on explanation above, semantic is the study of meaning and talk about meaning. Huford and Hasely (2007:1) argue that semantics is the study of meaning in language.
