GREAT BOOK!By Debbie from MAGreat book, couldn't put it down!9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A lot of trivia and a great look at some famous Hollywood alumni unscreened!By debQuite an interesting read! The letters between Kirk and Anne did get pretty tedious not too long into the book. However, the insights that they both told about themselves and others in LaLa land were very interesting. They hung out with and knew quite a lot of the Hollywood elite. Of course, Kirk did turn 100 years old in 2016. I do remember him accepting an award after his stroke. I had no idea, though, that was the longest phrase he had spoken since then. There is a lot of trivia for the buffs out there.A touching memoir that I was glad I had the opportunity to read and review. Thanks, Perseus Books Group, Running Press and Net Galley.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Enjoy!By CJSA very enjoyable book - not only did the Douglas' share their letters to each other during their courtship and marriage, they also shared letters sent and received from folks such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Henry Kissinger, Barack Obama, the Kennedy's, and many others. The book also contained numerous photos. I thank the Douglas' for sharing their memories. It is too bad that letter writing has gone by the wayside in these days of texting and twittering. The anticipation of getting the letter, holding it, reading it and re-reading it is a very special feeling that cannot be replicated with electronic communication. Film legend Kirk Douglas and Anne Buydens, his wife of nearly sixty-three years, look back on a lifetime filled with drama both on and off the screen. Sharing priceless correspondence with each other as well as the celebrities and world leaders they called friends, Kirk and Anne is a candid portrayal of the pleasures and pitfalls of a Hollywood life lived in the public eye. Compiled from Anne's private archive of letters and photographs, this is an intimate glimpse into the Douglases' courtship and marriage set against the backdrop of Kirk's screen triumphs, including The Vikings, Lust For Life, Paths of Glory, and Spartacus. The letters themselves, as well as Kirk and Anne's vivid descriptions of their experiences, reveal remarkable insight and anecdotes about the legendary figures they knew so well, including Lauren Bacall, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, the Kennedys, and the Reagans. Filled with photos from film sets, private moments, and public events, Kirk and Anne details the adventurous, oftentimes comic, and poignant reality behind the glamour of a Hollywood life-as only a couple of sixty-two years (and counting) could tell it. About the AuthorKirk Douglas, a living legend at age 100, has distinguished himself as an actor, producer, philanthropist, and author. His numerous recognitions for achievements both on and off screen include an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and France's Legion of Honor. Over a career spanning seventy years, he starred in some eighty films.Anne Buydens Douglas built her career in the film industry as a publicist. She met Kirk Douglas during the making of Act of Love (1953) and they married soon after. Anne would become his closest advisor and eventually take the reins as president of their independent production company, Bryna Productions.Kirk and Anne live in Los Angeles, CA. She was 89. Dukakis died Saturday morning in her home in New York City, according to Allison Levy, her agent at In- novative Artists. A cause of death was not immedi- ately released, but her family said in a statement that she had been in failing health for months. Dukakis won her Oscar through a surprising chain of circumstances, beginning with author Nora Ephron’s recommendation that she play Meryl Streep’s mother in the fi lm version of Ephron’s book “Heartburn.” Du- kakis got the role, but her scenes were cut from the fi lm. To make it up to her, director Mike Nichols cast her in his hit play “Social Se- curity.” Director Norman Jew- ison saw her in that role and cast her in “Moonstruck.” Dukakis won the Oscar for best supporting actress and Cher took home the trophy for best actress. She referred to her 1988 win as “the year of the Dukakii” because it was also the year Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis Dukakis, her cousin, was the Democratic Party’s presiden- tial nominee. • Kirk Douglas.
