February 2007 1 1. Background Amphibian species across the world have declined at an alarming rate in recent decades. According to the IUCN at least 122 species have gone extinct since 1980 and nearly one third of the world’s near 6,000 amphibian species are classified as threatened with extinction, placing the entire class at the core of the current biodiversity crisis (IUCN, 2006). Australasia too has experienced significant declines; several Australian species are considered extinct and nearly 25% of the remainder are threatened with extinction, while all four species native to New Zealand are threatened. Conventional causes of biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and invasive species, are playing a major role in these declines. However, emergent disease and climate change are strongly implicated in many declines and extinctions. These factors are now acting globally, rapidly and, most disturbingly, in protected and near pristine areas. Whilst habitat conservation and mitigation of threats in situ are essential, for many taxa the requirement for some sort of ex situ intervention is mounting. In response to this crisis there have been a series of meetings organised by the IUCN (World Conservation Union), WAZA (World Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and CBSG (Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, of the IUCN Species Survival Commission) around the world to discuss how the zoo community can and should respond. -

Recovery Plans delineate, justify and schedule management actions necessary to support the recovery of threatened species and ecological communities. Recovery plans are a partnership between the Department of the Environment and the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The Department of Parks and Wildlife acknowledges the role of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the Department of the Environment in guiding the implementation of this recovery plan. The attainment of objectives and the provision of funds necessary to implement actions are subject to budgetary and other constraints affecting the parties involved, as well as the need to address a range of priorities. Recovery Plans do not necessarily represent the views or the official position of individuals or organisations represented on the Recovery Team. This Recovery Plan was approved by the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Western Australia. Approved Recovery Plans are subject to modification as dictated by new findings, changes in status of the taxon or ecological community and the completion of recovery actions. -

A Comparative Study of Divergent Embryonic and Larval Development in the Australian Frog Genus Geocrinia (Anura: Myobatrachidae)

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract - Embryonic and larval development of the seven Geocrinia species across Australia are described and compared. This Australian myobatrachid genus includes three species with terrestrial embryonic development followed by aquatic exotrophic larval development and four species with entirely terrestrial and endotrophic development. Comparisons are made among species within the terrestrial/exotrophic group and the endotrophic group, and between the two breeding modes of each different species-group. Morphological differences are noted between northern and southeast coastal Western Australian populations of G. leai tadpoles. The G. rosea group shares some similarities with the other Australian endotrophic species in the genus Philoria and Crinia nimbus. IntroductIon Australia (Main 1957, 1965), have terrestrial embryonic development and exotrophic (aquatic, About 38 species of anurans from 22 genera and feeding) larval development. The remaining four 7 families worldwide are known to have nidicolous allopatric species in southwestern Australia (G. alba, endotrophic larvae, and if endotrophy occurs in G. lutea, G. rosea and G. vitellina) belong to the G. a genus, usually all species in that genus are of rosea that developmental guild (Thibaudeau and Altig species-group (Wardell-Johnson and Roberts 1999). The collection includes a total of 613 type specimens (excluding specimens maintained as possible paratypes) representing 55 species or subspecies of which four are currently considered junior synonyms of other species. The collection includes 44 holotypes, 3 lectotypes, 36 syntypes, 462 paratypes and 68 paralectotypes. In addition, the collection includes 392 specimens considered possible paratypes where paratype specimens could not be confrmed against specimens held in the WAM for fve species (Heleioporus barycragus, H. inornatus, H. psammophilus, Crinia pseudinsignifera and C. subinsignifera). There are 23 type specimens and seven possible paratypes that have not been located, some of which were part of historic disposal of specimens, and others with no records of disposal, loan or gifting and are therefore considered lost. Type specimens supposedly deposited in the WAM by Harrison of the Macleay Museum, University of Sydney, for Crinia rosea and Pseudophryne nichollsi were not located during the audit of types and are considered lost. -

The complexes were distinguished in terms of geomorphology and dominant vegetation. The least reserved complexes are those of the Darling Scarp, Blackwood Plateau, Collie Coalfields and those with agriculturally desirable soils. Available maps can be used to estimate the reserved area of each of the Bioregion’s vegetation complexes or geomorphic units, but there are not enough data on patterns in biodiversity to assess other facets of its adequacy, even in the northern part of the region. A quadrat-based regional survey is necessary if the representativeness of the area’s reserve system is to be assessed from an ecosystem perspective. The sampling would need to cover a range of the different components of the biota (perennial floristics, vertebrates and selected invertebrate taxa). Such surveys are time-consuming and expensive. Current studies of rare, restricted and endemic spe- cies, of weed, feral animal and pathogen impacts, and of forest management effects, need to continue in parallel. -

Walker, Jon Bielby, Trenton W. J. Garner, George Weaver, the Bd Mapping Group, and Matthew C. Fisher Supplemental Information Taxonomic Notes Genera were assigned to families for summarization (Table 1 in main text) and analysis (Table 2 in main text) based on the most recent available comprehensive taxonomic references (Frost et al. 2006, Frost 2008, Frost 2009, Frost 2011). We chose recent family designations to explore patterns of Bd susceptibility and occurrence because these classifications were based on both genetic and morphological data, and hence may more likely yield meaningful inference. Some North American species were assigned to genus according to Crother (2008), and dendrobatid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Grant et al. (2006). Eleutherodactylid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Hedges et al. (2008); centrolenid frogs based on Cisneros-Heredia et al. (2007). For the eleutherodactylid frogs of Central and South America and the Caribbean, older sources count them among the Leptodactylidae, whereas Frost et al. (2006) put them in the family Brachycephalidae. More recent work (Heinicke et al. 2007) suggests that most of the genera that were once “Eleutherodactylus” (including those species currently assigned to the genera Eleutherodactylus, Craugastor, Euhyas, Phrynopus, and Pristimantis and assorted others), may belong in a separate, or even several different new families. Subsequent work (Hedges et al. 2008) has divided them among three families, the Craugastoridae, the Eleutherodactylidae, and the Strabomantidae, which were used in our classification. -

Universidad de Costa Rica Facultad de Ciencias Escuela de Biología Curso Biología de Campo Coordinadores Federico Bolaños Gerardo Umaña Golfito Enero-Febrero, 1999 i Presentación del Curso Biología de Campo es un curso diseñado para estudiantes de grado y posgrado de la Escuela de Biología de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Este curso tiene como principal objetivo introducir a los estudiantes al trabajo de campo en los trópicos. La metodología radica en enseñar al estudiante a formular preguntas, enfrentándolo al desarrollo adecuado de diseños experimentales, así como al análisis e interpretación de la información. La filosofía del curso es el desarrollo de proyectos cortos en historia natural sin dejar de lado el diseño de estudios a largo plazo. Por cuarta vez se desarrolla éste en la región de Golfito desde el 8 de enero al 5 de febrero de 1999. Golfito se convierte en una zona de mucho provecho para este tipo de actividades puesto que permite tanto la realización de proyectos dirigidos al ambiente terrestre como al marino, sin dejar por fuera las facilidades que representa estar en uno de los centros de población de la zona. En total hubo 17 estudiantes, todos de la Escuela de Biología y participaron 14 profesores visitantes. Entre los profesores se contó con la participación de tres estudiantes del Posgrado en Biología y con Margarita Silva, actual profesora del Programa de Intercambio de nuestra institución con la Universidad de Kansas. Antes del viaje a Golfito se realizaron algunas actividades que involucraron cinco conferencias introductorias a la zona y una pequeña capacitación en el uso de hojas electrónicas y paquetes estadísticos realizada en el Laboratorio de Cómputo de la Escuela.
