Ymddiriedolaeth Penllergare – The Penllergare Trust Coed Glantawe Esgairdawe Llandeilo SA19 7RT Telephone: 01558 650735 or Email [email protected] July 2004 PREFACE This work has been commissioned by the Penllergare Trust, in furtherance of its primary objectives to protect, conserve, restore and maintain the cultural landscape of Penllergare for public benefit. It sets out to examine a remarkable estate which has to all intents and purposes been forgotten by contemporaries, in some respects scandalously so. Penllergare has been described as ‘a secret and magic place’ (John Brown and Company, Landskip and Prospect, p. 12) but this epithet scarcely does justice to what, in past times, was testimony to ‘spirited improvement’ on a grand, indeed exceptional, scale as well as the creativity, innovation, energy and ambition of its owners. Any study of Penllergare invariably focuses on the series of dramatic physical changes initiated by the Dillwyn Llewelyn family primarily from the fourth decade of the nineteenth century although, again, such an emphasis underplays the overall longevity and significance of the estate whose origins go back much earlier. At its zenith, the Penllergare estate was an outstanding example of a picturesque, romantic landscape created for the enjoyment of its owners.

This was presented to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by Samuel L. Parrish in 1886. A Word of Explanation By SUSANNA PARRISH WHARTON AFTER my Uncle Dillwyn Parrish's death in 1886, numerous family papers, beside a large collection of letters, photographs, and other interesting documents relating to the Society of Friends, was removed from his residence at 1017 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, to the home of my mother, Susanna Dillwyn vVharton, at 910 Clinton Street. My mother being the last of the children of Dr. Joseph Par rish, it seemed fitting that she should assume this responsibility. Of direct interest to my grandfather's descendants is a manuscript book compiled from various sources by my Uncle Dillwyn Parrish. This book is still in my possession. vVith the consent of his son, Stephen Parrish, material has been selected for this volume. It is mostly a biography of my grandfather, Dr. Joseph Parrish, but some pages are devoted to his ancestry.
