Zullo All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Stephannie Gearhart, advisor In this thesis, I expand upon Linda Hutcheon’s use of the terms “knowing” and “unknowing” audiences that she briefly outlines in her book A Theory of Adaptation. Hutcheon suggests that when experiencing an adaptation, one may be a “knowing” audience member, someone that knows the adapted work, or an “unknowing” audience member, someone who is not familiar with an adapted work. Hutcheon proposes the terms knowing and unknowing audiences as a way to reorient adaptation studies to consider the experience and the knowledge of the audience members. This model runs contrary to orthodox adaptation theory or fidelity criticism, wherein the value of an adaptation is determined by its closeness to an original. Theoretical discussions that rely upon studying the closeness of an adaptation to an original text do not provide insight into the text but simply re-establish a hierarchy for an “original.” Thus, Hutcheon’s use of the terms “knowing” and “unknowing” audiences is valuable because these terms provide new language to reinvigorate a field that, according to Thomas Leitch, has been “haunted by concepts and premises it has repudiated in principle but continued to rely on in practice” (63). Thus Hutcheon’s new language presents a step toward redefining the theory and producing scholarship that explores audience literacy or literacies.

For some, it is any aspect of culture that is aimed at and appreciated by a large segment of a society. Parfomak Specialist in Energy and Infrastructure Policy June 17, 2014 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R43604 Physical Security of the U.S. Power Grid: High-Voltage Transformer Substations Summary In the United States, the electric power grid consists of over 200,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines interspersed with hundreds of large electric power transformers. High voltage (HV) transformer units make up less than 3% of transformers in U.S. power substations, but they carry 60%-70% of the nation’s electricity. Because they serve as vital nodes and carry bulk volumes of electricity, HV transformers are critical elements of the nation’s electric power grid. HV transformers are also the most vulnerable to intentional damage from malicious acts. Recent security exercises, together with a 2013 physical attack on transformers in Metcalf, CA, have focused congressional interest on the physical security of HV transformers. They have also prompted new grid security initiatives by utilities and federal regulators. Legislative proposals, notably the Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense Act (H.R. 4298 and S. 2158), would expand these efforts by strengthening federal authority to secure the U.S. grid. For more than 10 years, the electric utility industry and government agencies have engaged in a number of initiatives to secure HV transformers from physical attack and to improve recovery in the event of a successful attack. These initiatives include coordination and information sharing, spare equipment programs, security standards, grid security exercises, and other measures.

While operating principles of transformers remain the same, the challenges of maintaining and testing transformers have evolved along with transformer design and construction. Modern transformers are designed to closer tolerances than transformers in the past. Thus, effective, regular maintenance and testing is even more essential to continued operation when traditional “overdesign” cannot be relied on to overcome abnormal conditions. The utility engineer must be familiar with all aspects of maintenance and testing and make use of state-of-the-art tools and techniques for evaluating transformer condition. While on-line diagnostic systems and computerized testing methods are very helpful, they are not a substitute for sound engineering judgment and expertise. This volume provides timely, practical advice to those seeking to better understand how transformers work, how they are best maintained, and how to test and evaluate their condition. It has been developed with the assistance of Bureau of Reclamation engineers responsible for operating and maintaining transformers at important powerplants in the Western States.     Grimlock and the Scavengers—joined by accidental new recruit Nickel—are employed by a Decepticon known as the Curator to recover an all- knowing artifact: The Magnificence. They find said artifact on the planet Confluence, in the claws of Scorponok and his lieutenant Flame—both ex-prisoners of Garrus-9, a notorious Autobot penal institution that once also accommodated Grimlock. After battling a forest of transforming trees, the Scavengers watch as Scorponok shuts Grimlock down with a simple gesture. Transferred to a cell aboard Scorponok's worldsweeper, Krok and Co. learn that the Magnificence was stored inside Grimlock's chest when the Dinobot was inside Garrus-9. After being "rescued" from G-9 by Scorponok, Grimlock was subjected to a barrage of physical and psychological torture until he relinquished the Magnificence. The experience left him a different person. Scorponok wakes Grimlock up just as Spinister is concluding an examination of his chest. The Dinobot instinctively lashes out... and Scorponok leaves the Scavengers to their fate. Some time later, a pair of guards discover Grimlock surrounded by the Scavengers' grisly remains.
