NEUMARKT 1991 No official twinning but Brochure (Steiermark) culture and sports associations ensure numerous contacts with towns abroad, particularly in Germany. Very active Europe House running exhibitions on the theme of Europe and the EEC and cultural events. SPITTAL AN DER DRAU (Carinthia) 1990 LÖHNE (D) 1973 School exchanges, international 1991 PORDENONE (I) 1987 musical and sports events. PORCIA (I) 1987 800th anniversary celebration to be held in 1991 together with an exhibition on the history of Spittal under the patronage of Arge-Alp-Adria. Several musical and sports events in 1990. (1) The population is indicated if specified by the candidate. (2) Official twinnings with municipalities in Council of Europe member states (according to latest information provided by candidates) ** Municipalities already awarded a Council of Europe Flag of Honour. - 4- Austria (cont'd) ST LEONARD 1989 Has friendly relations with Flags Brochures AM FORST 1990 towns of the same name. 1991 Very active 50-strong folk group performs abroad. In close contact with Polish <European Diploma 1990> dance group, and relations with the Polish town are developing. Exchanges with young people from the Allgäu since 1968 and farmers' exchanges since 1982; organises folk and music get-togethers. School drawing, essay and sports competitions. Preparations are under way for twinning with the French town of Nonancourt. Main activities in 1989 and 1990 were cultural: visit by French folk groups and Polish choirs. TRIEBEN 1989 QUIERSCHIED (D) 1962 Regular contacts since 1962, Flags Brochure (pop 4,500) 1990 particularly between town 1991 council delegations. Stepped up school exchanges (2 in 1988) ; <European Diploma 1990> joint sports and music events. 125 people visited the twin town in 1988. 300 sportsmen from 13 nations took part in a major international meeting in 1989• when Trieben declared itself to be a "European town". Very interested in sports events and will organise in 1992 worldchampionship of parachutism. TRUMAU 1990 HAINBURG (D) ** 1975 Annual festivities in each of Brochures (Lower Austria) 1991 VERNOUILLET (F)** 1976 the three towns in rotation. (pop. 20,000) ALBERNDORF (A)** 1973 Regular meetings between cultural and sports clubs, firemen, religious communities, police officers and representatives of industry (local products have been exhibited in the twin town of Hainburg). - 5 - \ustria ((cont'd) n/ILDSCHÖNAU 1990 - In 1933, some people from - Brochure (pop. 3.^00) Wildschönau established a settlement in Brazil called "Dreizehnlinden", which now has 4,500 inhabitants. (European Diploma 1990> Close links have developed between the people of the two communities. Exchanges are mainly in the tourist sphere, with choirs and orchestras coming from the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Federal Republic of Germany. Wildschönau also holds international sports competitions (skiing, swimming, etc). After an initial school exchange in 1989, has decided to develop such exchanges. - 6 - BELGIUM COMINES-EUROPE (see under "France", page 10) ESNEUX 1991 CHATILLON/S/SEINE (F) 1970 Sports and cultural events at ? Celebrated [European Diploma 1990] 10th and 20th anniversaries of twinning in style. Also has links with frontier towns in the Netherlands. HERVE 1991 VERDUN (F) 1920 Contacts chiefly between Forges Flags Extensive (Wallonia>) FORGES-LES-EAUX (F) I960 and Battice, one of the eight document- (pop. 15,000) villages forming the Hervé ation municipality, at the twinning anniversaries. Thanks to its favoured position in the heart of Europe, Hervé has built up numerous exchanges of persons organised by the various committees (firemen, war veterans, gourmet/catering guilds and especially sports groups). 3-day celebration in 1990 for the 30th anniversary of twinning between Battice and Forges-les-Eaux (most impressive list of events). - 7 - Belgium (cont'd) GENK 1991 GELEEN (NL) 1989 Meetings in 1990 extended chiefly Flags Press (Limbourg) TROISDORF (D) 1989 with Geleen and Troisdorf, two new cuttings (pop. 61,000) NIEWPOORT (B)** 1972 twinning partners. Artists' exhibition, contacts between local officials handling culture, sport and tourism; organisation of an environmental colloquy, sports and music gatherings, regimental festivals .... Signed a co-operation agreement with CIESZYN (Pol) in 1989 with cultural and sports meetings. Numerous cultural events (carnival, cartoon film festival) which attract visitors from all over Europe. HUY 1990 COMPIEGNE (F)** 1959 Major event for townspeople when the VIANDEN (L) 1961 pledge to twin with Compiègne was given ARONA (I) 1966 in 1959- Three-way twinning involving Huy, Compiège and Vianden in 1964. <European Diploma 1990> Meetings between sports clubs, close cultural co-operation: artists collaborate on joint works. Local authorities give active support to exchanges at every level. Very recent twinning with Arras. ZWIJNDRECHT 1990 IDSTEIN (D) 1970 The initial contact was between Flags Brochures (Province of the mayors, after which exchanges Antwerp) expanded to involve the whole (pop. 16,500) population. Will celebrate the 20th anniversary of twinning in 1990. Annual cycle race between Zwijndrecht in Belgium and Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands. Also has local government contacts with Idstein's twin towns: Lana (I) and Vlijmen (NL). - 9 FRANCE ACIGNE 1991 WACHTENDONK (F) 1980 Sports and cultural exchanges Flags Brochures (lile et Vilaine) with festivities on the 10th anniversary. Has sponsored a Romanian village since 1989 with financial and logistic support. AIGUILLON 1989 VISE (B)** 1958 Every five years, a large Flags, Press (Dordogne) gathering celebrates the particip- cuttings twinning anniversary, more ation by than 600 people visiting the schools twin town. 2-week school exchanges, council-subsidised sports events, celebrations of national festivals. Gastronomic exchanges, with presentation of local products. Celebrated the 30th anniversary of twinning in 1988, when a relay walk took place between the two towns (1,000 km).
