ETHIOPIA JIMMA-MIZAN ROAD UPGRADING PROJECT (Project Number: P- ET- DB0 – 011) ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT SUMMARY 1. Introduction The Jimma-Mizan road upgrading project is one of the main road projects included in the Ethiopian Government’s 10 Years Road Sector Development Programme – (1997- 2007). This development programme is designed to improve and expand the country's road network in order to stimulate the economy for long term development. It is recognised that agriculture is the backbone of the economy and particular importance is placed on the development of this sector by the removal of the transport constraints facing the sector. This explains the decision to upgrade the deteriorating Jimma-Mizan road to provide market access to agricultural products and facilitate agricultural export particularly coffee produced in the project zone of influence. Road upgrading is likely to cause negative and positive impacts on the environment.The ESIA study for the Jimma-Mizan road project seeks to explain the biophysical features of the existing Jimma-Mizan road, to describe proposed realignment road sections and to assess potential positive and negative impacts of the whole Jimma-Mizan road upgrading project. It also proposed appropriate solutions to avoid or minimise any adverse impact that may result from the project during and after the upgrading process. The African Development Bank (AfDB) categorised this project as a Category 1 project, which is subjected to an ESIA. The Environmental Policy of Ethiopia (EPE) also includes ESIA policies in the cross-sectoral environmental policies and requires a project of this nature to prepare an ESIA study.

Saving and Credit Cooperative are the main source of finance for people who have low income level. In this study the role of saving and credit cooperatives in improving rural micro financing in Bench Maji, Kaffa, and Shaka Zones was examined. Methodologically descriptive survey research was applied. Ideological preparedness of community on saving, tool to improve members saving culture, members’ actual deposit, and loan facilities performed by cooperatives were the focuses in this study. The findings show that there is a contribution in changing the saving culture of the members, monthly deposit, and loan disbursement capacity. The challenges are shortage of finance for loan, irregularity in saving, weak collection of loan receivables, no collaboration with other financial institutions, limitation in awareness creation, and limited support of government to lower administrative level. Therefore, to fulfil the members’ financial need cooperatives have to increase the number of members, the Government should establish strong education, training, and information unit at Zone and Woreda level, without abiding cooperative rules should arrange capital injection and collaboration with Micro financial Institutions, private and public banks.

Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire through interview of selected 112 local communities, focus group discussion and direct observation. The data analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 146 wild animals, 24 mammals, 70 bird species, 22 herpetofauna and 30 insect species were identified. However, the wild animal resources declined 99% in the last twenty years due to illegal hunting 68.8% followed by habitat loss 22.3%.

Box 96, Jinka, Ethiopia Abstract The market assessment study was conducted in Dasenech, Malle and Benatsemay Districts of South Omo Zone with the objectives of assessing market feasible commodities for income generation in some selected project woredas of south Omo Zone. A total of 459 members of self-help group from pastoral and agro pastorals were participated on key informants’ interview as well as group discussion from 15 kebeles of three woreda. According to the key informants’ interview and focus group discussion with in each group we had summarized and prioritized the consensus ideas of the participants in group discussion for feasible income generating activities. The constraints in the study area include absence of market linkage, market information, infrastructure problem and absence of alternative market, producing poor quality product due to lack of awareness and crop disease. INTRODUCTION More than 85% of the Ethiopian population, residing in the rural area, is engaged in agricultural production as a major means of livelihood. Agriculture, which accounts for about 47% of GDP, 80% of export earnings and 85% of employment is the backbone of the economy. The industrial sector which accounted for only 12% of GDP in 2004 comprises making of textiles, food processing, cement manufacturing, construction and hydroelectric power generation, among others (MoARD, 2008).

The mid-2008 population is estimated at nearly 16,000,000; almost a fifth of the country’s population. With less than one in tenth of its population (8.9%) living in urban areas in 2008 the region is overwhelmingly rural. "The region is divided into 13 administrative zones, 133 Woredas and 3512 Kebeles, and its capital is Awassa." [1] "The SNNPR is an extremely ethnically diverse region of Ethiopia, inhabited by more than 80 ethnic groups, of which over 45 (or 56 percent) are indigenous to the region (CSA 1996). These ethnic groups are distinguished by different languages, cultures, and socioeconomic organizations. Although none of the indigenous ethnic groups dominates the ethnic makeup of the national population, there is a considerable ethnic imbalance within the region. The largest ethnic groups in the SNNPR are the Sidama (17.6 percent), Wolayta (11.7 percent), Gurage (8.8 percent), Hadiya (8.4 percent), Selite (7.1 percent), Gamo (6.7 percent), Keffa (5.3 percent), Gedeo (4.4 percent), and Kembata (4.3 percent) …. While the Sidama are the largest ethnic group in the region, each ethnic group is numerically dominant in its respective administrative zone, and there are large minority ethnic groups in each zone. The languages spoken in the SNNPR can be classified into four linguistic families: Cushitic, Nilotic, Omotic, and Semitic.
