Volume 55 of Clinical Neurosurgery represents the official compilation of the invited scientific manu- scripts from the plenary sessions, the Presidential address by Dr. Douglas Kondziolka, and biographic and bibliographic information of the Honored Guest. Dr. L. Dade Lunsford. This landmark meeting under the leadership of President Douglas Kondziolka introduced a novel, interactive, educational paradigm called Integrated Medical Learning (IML) which fos- tered audience participation using advanced interactive technology. Data from these stimulating sessions, focusing on the treatment of brain metastases, spondylolisthesis, and cerebral aneu- rysms, are captured for review, analysis, and future presentation to the neurosurgical commu- nity at large. IML has proven to be a powerful and effective tool to bring together the “teacher” and “learner”. -

He was educated by some of the best doctors and professors in Romania, during the communist regime. After his escape through the communist regime, in 1961, at 41 years old, he started his neurosurgical and radiosurgical career at Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, under the renown Herbert Olivecrona and Lars Leksell. He worked here for 25 years, until he retired in 1987 as head of 1st and 2nd Departments of Neurosurgery in the institute’s affiliated clinic Sophiahemmet Hospital. He is most known in Sweden as the first to introduce microsurgical techniques in neurosurgery, but internationally he is known as “the unofficial emissary of Gamma Knife Surgery”. After his retirement, he continued his practice at University of Virginia, USA, for another 23 years and another two years at International Neurosciences Institute, Hannover, Germany, being a Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology of Gamma Knife Surgery. -

Laws, MD2 1Department of Neurosurgery, University Hospital of Münster, Germany; 2Department of Neurosurgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts; and 3Department of Neurosurgery, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina Harvey Cushing is considered the father of neurosurgery, not just for his work within the United States, but also for his global influence through international visitors and trainees. Starting in 1920, the neurosurgical clinic at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, led by Cushing, trained surgeons from all over the globe, many of whom returned home to establish neurosurgical departments and become neurosurgical pioneers themselves. The objective of this vignette is to highlight the importance of Cushing’s international trainees, describe their contributions, and discuss how each had an impact on the development of the practice of neurosurgery worldwide. The authors demonstrate how Cushing provided the impetus for a movement that revolutionized neurology and neurosurgery worldwide.
