5 Club Life, May 2019 SAVE THE DATE: GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY FILM NIGHT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12 Celebrating Marriage - Honoring Golden Couples

All members are invited to share in the festivities of our 5th Annual Golden Anniversary Film Night and to honor Governors Club couples celebrating their Golden Anniversary in 2019. A display of wedding albums and several wedding gowns will greet you as you arrive.

Our 1969 film, “Hello Dolly!” stars Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau and a young Michael Crawford. It is indeed a “timeless classic” which honors and celebrates marriage. Movie Diva Laura Boyes, Film Curator NCMA, returns to Introduce our Film in her own inimitable and refreshing style – her love of film-making shines through.

Join the fun and help our Golden Couples celebrate! This year’s class is of record size with a dozen couples reaching this honored milestone.

Please save the date and plan to attend. And if you are celebrating 50 this year and have not been contacted as yet, please call Lowell Hoffman (919-656-9955) or our Film Night Coordinator Donna Thornton (919-260-0370). The word for June is “Happy Anniversary and Hello Dolly”.

SAVE THE DATE: NASA AND MOON LANDING - AUGUST 21

Most of us will remember just where we were on July 20, 1969 as we watched live TV coverage of the Moon Landing by NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Recently retired Administrator of NASA, Charles Bolden will be our Program Speaker on Wednesday, August 21 to commemorate this milestone event of our time. Bolden was himself an astronaut who flew 4 missions. He commanded the Mission which placed the Hubbell telescope into orbit as but one of his space flight accomplishments.

A special program for young people and students will be offered earlier in the afternoon.

Program Chair Lowell Hoffman and past Board Member Mike Ryan have collaborated to arrange this landmark program. We hope that members will mark the date on their own August calendars and be prepared to re-live 50 years of space flight history.

ALAMANCE EXCURSION A group of Governors Club members enjoyed a trip to Alamance this past month. It included a well-hosted exploration of the site with staff members in period costume. Members enjoyed a nice trip beyond the gates!

10 Club Life, May 2019 GOLF THOMAS BRINSON Director of Golf

Why Tiger’s Win is a Good Thing for Golf

It seems that this year’s Masters is getting more post-event press coverage than in past years, and for good reason…what a Sunday! If I look back at the Masters victories that Tiger had in the early 2000s, he was usually battling one or maybe two other players at most. This year there were eight or more players that had a chance to win going into the back nine on Sunday. It’s hard to beat that if you want drama.

We all like a comeback story. To see Tiger come back from injuries and personal struggles to win again on golf’s biggest stage is great to see. However, I think Tiger’s win is bigger than that. It is good for the game of golf as a whole.

Tiger did from 1997 to 2008 what Arnold Palmer did for golf a generation prior. He made the sport cool for the non-golfer. The game grew leaps and bounds while Tiger was on top of his game. He single-handedly brought kids to the game that may not have been attracted to the sport otherwise. Since then, those kids have grown up and are now playing against him on tour. Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, and many others dreamed of playing on the same stage as Tiger. Now they get to make that dream a reality. Seeing these dreams come to life, coupled with sharing that stage with the player that inspired them all, is extremely special for them.

What may be lost in this discussion is that kids today - including Tiger’s own kids - never had the opportunity to see him compete at the top of his game. For today’s generation to see Tiger compete and win this way again will inspire more kids come to the game of golf. The press continunes to show off Tiger more than they have any other Masters winner.

No one wants to shrink the game of golf; we want it to grow. I cannot think of a downside to growing the game. If Tiger winning brings more players, young and old, to the game, then bring it on, Tiger! The PGA Championship, with its new date, is just away. It will be fun to see what Tiger does for the event and how he continues to contribute to the game of golf on a course he has won a major at already.

For further information please contact Diane Lavigne or Marsha Pront. 17 Club Life, May 2019 TENNIS TODD CHING Director of Tennis and Wellness Operations From the Pros:

I have looked into whether or not aqua tennis exists, and (un)fortunately it is not an option… This has been some spring! While we are thankful that our lakes are full and the pollen is washed away, we are looking forward to drier weather and several fun upcoming events.

Pickleball has been a great success since its introduction in February. The courts have been well-utilized and we have now introduced two days per week of “open play.” Open play is one of the great concepts of Pickleball that encourages players to just show up and challenge. On Mondays and Wednesdays, please come out between 3:30 and 5:00 pm and get in on the action!

At the end of the month, we will have our clay courts resurfaced. We will need to close them for 2-3 days but will have courts available at some of the other local clubs. Our hard courts will also be open during this time. This resurfacing was originally scheduled in late February, but the amount of rain delayed it until late this spring. The great news (barring any crazy weather!) is that we will have fantastic playing conditions late into the fall season.

Please do not forget to sign up for your courts (The new Pickleball policy is below!). Reserving a court not only prevents any confusion, we also look at court reservations as one of the important data points when it comes to usage and future projects.

See you on the courts! Todd and Robyn

PICKLEBALL RESERVATION POLICY

With the addition of Pickleball, there is a slight change to the ForeTees court reservation system. Please take a moment to review them. These changes are now in effect.

1) Court 7 will be the only court that may be reserved for Pickleball

2) Court 8 is available for Pickleball Open Play (play without a reservation) if it is not being used for tennis or the ball machine

3) Court 7 has been split into “7A” and “7B”

4) If you are playing tennis and would like to play on court 7, simply reserve court “7A” as you normally would reserve a tennis court.

5) If you are playing Pickleball, please reserve court “7A” or “7B” (if 7A has already been reserved) and list your playing partners with the new guest designation of “Pickleball.”

6) If you would like to play Pickleball, but you see that 4 members without the guest designation of “Pickleball” are playing on court 7A, that means the court is being used for tennis and is not currently available for Pickleball.
