RESOURCES FOR LENT

2013 Lent book " Homeward Bound " written by Bishop Doug Stevens based on the lectionary readings for Lent 2013 will be available for purchase mid December , from Grassroots Resources.

2013 LENT STUDY “Homeward Bound” Being in fellowship with God. Many images come to mind when people think of home, but home is more than just one’s house and family. Home is the town you grew up in, home is your country, the place where people speak your language, share your values and support the same team.

Now, importantly, the concept of home was very early extended to include a spiritual dimension and location. Home was linked to God, to church, to where one’s heart finds peace and purpose. At home with God, people can and have experienced, the greatest sense of belonging and worthiness.

During the five studies we will look in different ways at the theme of being “Homeward Bound” • Lent 1 Deciding to head for home • Lent 2 Keeping an eye on the home ahead • Lent 3 Food and companionship for the journey home • Lent 4 Being renewed as we head home - Heading home purposefully • Lent 5 Home’s front door is opened

• Cost $ 9.50 plus postage (No postage on orders 40+) • First price change since 2008. • Full colour • Discounts on “Homeward Bound” for orders 50 and over • Books can be ordered and paid for on line or we will send an account • The readings are based on the Year "C" lenten lectionary readings using An Australian Lectionary.

THE REV’D DR ALAN CADWALLADER COMING TO DIOCESE - A HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO LUKE 8 & 9 February 2013 Alan Cadwallader , Senior Lecturer in New Testament at the Australian Catholic University Canberra campus will present two one-day workshops at St Francis College, Milton. Before moving to his present position with ACU in canberra, Alan taught Old Testament for several years at St Barnabas Theological College in Adelaide. He is a respected biblical scholar in the Australian and international context, and a member of the archaeological team excavating the NT city of Colossae. Alan is an exciting and dynamic presenter, and these workshops will be both challenging and rewarding as we prepare to observe the Year of Luke.

FRIDAY FEB 8 10am – 3pm (BYO lunch) LUKE: IMPERIAL COLLABORATOR OR FIFTH COLUMNIST? Luke has been called the well-spring of the catholicizing of Christianity and the inspirer of incipient communism. That Luke’s writings can garner such contrasts illustrates that the Gospel bearing his name needs careful handling. Multiple agendas are running, not the least being the negotiation of empire and a commitment to the integrity of the gospel in a new age. How Luke pulls of these competing concerns is the focus of the day which is ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR CLERGY.

SATURDAY FEB 9 10am – 3pm (BYO lunch) THE YEAR OF THE OX: IN FOR THE LONG HAUL . Luke provides abundant material for the church’s year. So many of the accents of our key festivals are grounded in this gospel. But things are not always as they seem. In our focus on Luke’s infancy and passion stories and the journey that bridges them, we will seek to plumb some of the depths locked into the gospel. This workshop is ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR LAY PEOPLE, including liturgical assistants and small group leaders.

The cost for each day is $30.00 , with numbers limited to 60 people for each of the workshops. Shape of the day: 9.30 registration and coffee 10.00 Workshop 1 12.00 Lunch Break 1.00 Workshop 2 3.00 coffee and departure Register online http://bible360.org.au/events/a-hitchhikers-guide-to-luke/ or contact Jo Mould at the PMC on (07) 3835 2284 or by email: [email protected]

7 from BMF We would appreciate if you have any final 2012 donations for BMF they be forwarded by 7 December. We are so overwhelmed by the generosity of this Diocese again this year to help the work of those caring for our remote communities. Lutwyche raised $200 from a raffle supporting BMF last Saturday during their Parish Breakfast. This takes their total for the year well over the $1,000 mark. Fr Tom will present a plaque to add to their windmill on 16 December. The BMF team shared Fr Tom’s final Sunday as Locum at Mt Gravatt on Sunday. Wendy and the Achor Music Team led the music at the 7am service and a special children’s song and other songs during the 9am service. We pray for Bishop Doug as he commences his ministry next week-end. Mt Gravatt continue to show their support to the west and have had along association with Charleville and BMF for many years and have supported Fr Tom in his role as promoter of the Fund while he was their locum which was so truly appreciated. Dr Murray Harvey welcomed the BMF team to St Mark’s Clayfield Sewing group on Monday and Fr Tom had the great joy of presenting to them a Golden Windmill. He had the opportunity of sharing with the group about the work of BMF. This Windmill is over and above the windmill already presented to the Parish in October. Members of the team will be at the Ordination this Saturday ...we pray for all those being ordained. We pray that perhaps some of those being ordained will consider ministering in the rural and remote parts of this Diocese during their ministry. BMF Wine : Fr Tom has been busy delivering BMF wine to parishes. Red and White wine available!! It is a great Christmas gift idea (or to serve for Christmas parties). Wine is $10 per bottle. The thesis was entitled Noli me tangere: a post- colonial feminist recovery of Mary Magdalene from the traditions, structures and authority of imperial church . Dr Steven Ogden thesis supervisor said, “Gillian’s thesis was beautifully written combining creativity, critical insight and aesthetic sensibility”. In the process, the thesis constitutes an adept theological, historical and social commentary on the life of the Church”. A copy of the thesis is held in the Roscoe Library. The Rev’d Mary C. Earle, an Episcopal priest, writer, retreat leader, and spiritual director, is the author of the recently published book Marvelously made : gratefulness and the body . As we approach Christmas, it seems like an appropriate book to highlight.

“Once in a while, a book opens an entirely new world. Marvelously made : gratefulness and the body , quite unexpectedly, did that for me. … This piercingly beautiful book starts with Earle’s own journey to the discovery of the sacredness of the body. The second section invites the reader into meditations on different organs of the body. Deceptively simple, the meditations took me very deep very quickly, stripping off layer after layer of what gets between me and God.” — Margaret Benefiel, in the Foreword. “A deceptively short book to be read slowly and savored. Reminding us of the wonder of the Incarnation, it invites the reader to reflect on the holiness of our bodies. Her guidelines for prayers of gratitude for our physical selves are gentle and doable .” —Margaret Guenther, Holy Listening , The Practice of Prayer , and Walking Home . “Mary Earle helps us see that our bodies are marvelously made, a ‘sacred space’, where God’s wondrous and mysterious ways can be appreciated contemplatively, with gratitude. But she also takes gratitude to its

9 next step, in suggesting ways of serving others’ bodily needs with compassion and conviction.” — Brian C. Taylor, Becoming Christ: Transformation Through Contemplation “Earle leads the reader gently to a renewed sense of wonder, amazement, and profound gratitude for the gift of being in a body. Highly recommended.” — Christine Valters Paintner, The artist’s rule : nurturing your creative soul with monastic wisdom. Explore these resources and more using the Roscoe Library catalogue: go to www.roscoe.org.au . Opening hours are Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:30pm.
