15pc surplus power: ministry MEW calls to rationalize electricity consumption

KUWAIT CITY, June 24: The Ministry of Electricity and Water has appealed to the public to rationalize electricity consumption, considering the steady increase in consump- tion due to rising temperatures, reports Al-Anba daily quot- ing sources from the ministry. The power consumption index recently recorded a maxi- mum consumption of 14,350 megawatts during which the temperature was 47 degrees Celsius. Sources said the consumption is still within the ministry’s expectations and below the projected maximum consump- tion of 15,600 megawatts based on the annual increase mon- itored by the ministry. Sources revealed the ministry has power supply surplus of about 15 percent of the total production, so it can still meet the demand; but this does not mean wasting energy as judicious consumption is necessary to avoid putting pressure on stations and to prevent power disruptions due to technical faults. Sources stressed that while the ministry is able to meet the demand, it is at the same time dealing with an electri- cal network which may be exposed to pressure and technical malfunctions like any other network in the world. They af- fi rmed the ministry is doing its best to maintain the service and deliver it to customers in full capacity. Council rejects MPW’s request to allocate KD1m for ‘tunnel’ KUWAIT CITY, June 24: The Municipal Council, in its ses- sion presided over by Eng Osama Al-Otaibi, approved the amendments to the previous regulation on the list of mobile vehicles, reports Al-Qabas daily. The council compared its internal regulations with those stipulated on the list from the Legal Advice and Legislation Department to fi nd out the differences between the two regu- lations, and discuss these differences in the next session. On the other hand, the council rejected the request of the Ministry of Public Works to allocate KD 1 million for Der- wazat Al-Abdul-Razzaq tunnel which is located in the heart of the capital, and referred it to the Heritage Protection Com- mittee. It also rejected the request of the mayor of Mansouriya for the Arab Club to establish restaurants and shops in the area. ARAB TIMES, FRIDAY-SATURDAY, JUNE 25-26, 2021 LOCAL 5

Can ET see us? Study fi nds many stars with prime Earth view NEW YORK, June 24, (AP): Feeling like you are being watched? It could be from a lot farther away than you think. Astronomers took a technique used to look for life on other planets and fl ipped it around — so instead of looking to see what’s out there, they tried to see what places could see us. There’s a lot. Astronomers calculated that 1,715 stars in our galactic neighborhood — and hundreds of probable Earth-like planets circling those stars — have had an unobstructed view of Earth during human civilization, according to a study Wednesday in the journal Nature. “When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said study lead author Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University. Even though some experts, includ- ing the late Stephen Hawking, warn against reaching out to aliens because they could harm us, Kaltenegger said it doesn’t matter. If those planets have advanced life, someone out there could conclude that there is life back here based on oxygen in our atmos- phere, or by the radio waves from hu- man sources that have swept over 75 of the closest stars on her list. “Hiding is not really an option,” she Kaltenegger said. Kaltenegger and astrophysicist Jacqueline Faherty of the American Museum of Natural History used the Euro- Coronavirus pean Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope to turn that around, looking to see what star systems could watch Earth as it passes in front of the sun. They looked at the 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth. One light-year is 5.9 trillion miles. The angle to see What should I know about the delta variant? Most daunting role Kaufmann takes on Tristan, voice killer NEW YORK, June 24, (AP): Ten years ago, Jo- nas Kaufmann didn’t hesitate when asked if he was ready to take on heavy Wagnerian roles like the hero of “Tristan und Isolde.” “I don’t want to get into the history books as one of the youngest Tristans ever, and who lost his voice right after,” Kaufmann, then 41, told The Associated Press. “Hopefully I’ll be able to do those things later.” Now he’s 51, and later has arrived. On June 29 the most sought-after tenor in opera stakes his claim to one of its most daunting roles, headlining a new production at Munich’s Bavar- ian State Opera directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. There will be fi ve perfor- mances through July 31, all sold out. It’s the highest-profi le de- but imaginable, kicking off the company’s annual sum- mer festival - the last one planned by outgoing chief Nikolaus Bachler. It also re- Kaufmann unites him with his frequent co-star, soprano Anja Har- teros, and with conductor Kirill Petrenko, who is leaving Munich for the Berlin Philharmonic.
