Amazon petitioned the agency Wednesday to remove Chair Lina Khan from taking part in current probes of the company’s market conduct. Khan has been a fi erce critic of tech giants Facebook, Google and Apple, as well as Ama- zon. She arrived on the antitrust scene in 2017, writing an infl uential study titled “Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox” when she was a Yale law student. FTC offi cials declined comment on Amazon’s motion. The agency could be expected to respond formally at some point. As counsel to a House Judiciary antitrust panel in 2019 and 2020, Khan played a key role in a sweeping bipartisan investigation of the market power of the four tech giants. President Joe Biden recently installed Khan as one of fi ve commissioners and head of the FTC, signaling a tough stance toward Big Tech and its market dominance. At 32, she is the youngest chair in the history of the agency, which polices competition and consumer protection in industry generally, as well as digital privacy. “Due process entitles all individuals and companies to fair consideration of the merits of any investigation or ad- judication by impartial commissioners who have not - and, equally importantly, who do not appear to have - prejudged the issues against them,” Seattle-based Amazon said in the motion. The FTC has been investigating the tech giants. On Mon- day, a federal judge dismissed antitrust lawsuits brought against Facebook by the FTC and a coalition of states, say- ing they didn’t provide enough evidence to prove that Fa- cebook is a monopoly in the social networking market. The judge, however, allowed the FTC to revise its complaint and try again. Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer, is said by regulators to control 50% to 70% of online market sales. Founded by Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest individual, Ama- zon runs an e-commerce empire and ventures in cloud com- puting, personal “smart” tech and beyond. Some independent merchants who sell products on Ama- zon.com have complained about the company’s practices, such as contract provisions said to prevent sellers from of- fering their products at lower prices or on better terms on any other online platform, including their own websites. Details of the deal were being withheld until UAW members at the assembly operations facility in Dublin could be briefed about the contract ahead of an upcom- ing ratifi cation vote, the union said in a statement Thursday. It’s the third tentative labor agreement after two previous deals were rejected by union workers. The strike and picket lines will continue until the ratifi - cation vote, the union said. Volvo says the 1.6 million square-foot Dublin plant is the largest manufacturer of Volvo tractor-trailer trucks in the world. It is one of the largest private sector em- ployers in the region, with approximately 3,300 employ- ees, some 2,900 of whom are represented by the UAW. The previous contract, reached in 2016, was to have expired in mid-March and ne- gotiations began in February. Unionized workers went on strike from April 17 to 30 and returned to work as negotia- tions resumed. UAW mem- bers rejected a proposed con- tract in May. The company announced another tentative agreement later that month, but it was rejected June 6. “UAW members and their families felt strongly about the need for fi nancial stability gains in this contract and were willing to strike not once, but twice, to achieve those gains,” UAW President and Director of the UAW Heavy Truck Department Ray Curry said in the statement. ‘2030 too long to wait’ Does new Alz’s drug work? Study probes

WASHINGTON, July 4, (AP): When a controversial Alz- heimer’s drug won US approval, surprise over the decision quickly turned to shock at how long it might take to fi nd out if it really works — nine years. Drugmaker Biogen has until 2030 to complete a study confi rming whether its new drug Aduhelm truly slows the brain-destroying disease. That’s under the terms of the Food and Drug Administration’s conditional approval of the drug, a decision that has been praised by patients as overdue and condemned by the agency’s own outside experts. But both camps agree: 2030 is far too long to wait for an- swers on the $56,000-a-year drug. “We think nine years is unacceptable and our expectation is that it will happen in a much shorter time frame,” said Maria Carrillo of the Alzheimer’s Associa- tion, an advocacy group that pushed for approval but now wants the FDA to set a quicker deadline. Other experts warn that the 2030 timeline could slip if patients balk at enrolling in a new study for a drug that’s already available. And the focus on Aduhelm — the fi rst new Alzhei- mer’s drug in 18 years — could steer volunteers away from testing of other promising treatments. Born to conduct Film charts ‘heroic’ rise of Met director

NEW YORK, July 4, (AP): “Now I will conduct a short excerpt from Ravel’s ‘Bolero,’” the Met- ropolitan Opera’s future music director announces proudly. It’s Yannick Nezet-Seguin, but he’s not the fi g- ure familiar to opera lovers on the podium of one of the world’s great concert halls. Instead, he’s a fourth-grader addressing the talent show at Saint- Isaac-Jogues primary school in Montreal. And then, in Susan Froemke’s new documen- tary, “Yannick: An Artist’s Journey,” the 10-year- old boy launches into an exuberant exhibition of arm-waving to a recording of Ravel’s ferocious masterwork. The scene is among the many amateur video mo- ments that help chart the de- velopment of one of the most gifted conductors to emerge on the classical music scene in years. And Froemke has smartly paired this early mo- ment with a snippet of the mature Nezet-Seguin leading the Met orchestra in the same piece. Yannick “What’s amazing to me,” she said in an interview, “is if you look at the way he’s moving his arms as a child, it’s almost exactly the way he does it today.” Those arms are key to his style of conducting, learned from his idol, maestro Carlo Maria Giulini, In this Oct 17, 2012, file photo, the Philadelphia Orchestra rehearses with its new music director and conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin at the Kimmel Center, in Philadelphia.
