Naturk. Ser. A Nr. 369 228 S. Stuttgart, 30. 11. 1984 Catalogue of Palearctic Tachinidae (Diptera) By Benno Herting, Stuttgart Sum mary An annotated catalogue is given of all described and identified Palearctic Tachinidae inclu- ding their Synonyms. Species-group nomina dubia which cannot be placed in a certain genus are, however, omitted. One new name, Prosethilla nom.n. for Chaetinella Mesnil 1949 (preoc- cupied name) is proposed. A summary of the new Synonyms is given on p. 183. A, Nr. 369 Introduction This catalogue of Palearctic Tachinidae is the result of a 15 years study of literature and type specimens. More detailed information about the nominal species described by certain authors has been published in a number of preceding papers: Herting 1969b (on Rondani's species), 1972 (on Meigen's species), 1974a (on Robineau-Des- voidy), 1974c (on Egger, Schiner, Brauer & Bergenstamm), 1975a (on Meigen and Rondani), 1976 (on Macquart) and 1978 (on Perris and Pandelle). Colleagues have worked out similar revisions: Crosskey (1966a) on Wiedemann's types, Sabros- ky & Crosskey (1969) on Baranov's species, Crosskey (1974) on the British Tachini- dae of Walker and Stephens, Richter (1979a) on Portshinsky's species. The fundamental and admirable work on the Palearctic Tachinidae by Mesnil in Lindner was begun in 1944 and is not yet finished (a part of the Dexiini and most of the Phasiinae are still lacking). During this long period, many changes in nomenclatu- re and taxonomy have become necessary, and most of these were published in scatte- red notes which cannot be found easily by a non-specialist. For this reason, references to the most up to date revision of the genus and, in some cases, to the most exact redes- cription of the species have been included in the catalogue. Biological data are not included. Much information may be obtained from the au- thor's book on the Biology of West Palearctic Tachinidae (Herting 1960), which is, however, more restricted geographically and not up to date. Many new breeding re- cords and observations, some of them being of great interest, should be added, and the dissolution of species complexes has caused great changes in the genera Medina (= Degeeria), Siphona etc. A Supplement is therefore needed, and I intend to prepare it in the next years. All specialists working on the Tachinidae have experienced the difficulty in their Classification at the suprageneric level. The adult flies offer very many morphological characters, but the evolution has followed a „mosaic" pattern, that means that none of these characters can be fully relied on as an indication of phylogenetic relationship. There are often exceptions in closely related species, and convergences in taxa that are phylogenetically remote from each other. Biological facts and adaptations seem to be better criteria because they are not so easily changed in the course of evolution. They have therefore been preferably used in current taxonomy. The Classification used in this catalogue reflects the actual State of knowledge. It does not differ much from the one that I had proposed in my book on Tachinid biolo- gy in 1960. The subdivision into four subfamilies is the same, only the name Echino- myiinae had to be changed into Tachininae. Some alterations have been made on the tribal level: The tribe Goniini is now restricted to the microoviparous forms, whereas the oviparous and ovolarviparous genera areassembled in a separate tribe, Eryciini. In the sipfamily Tachininae, the number of tribes has been moderately increased, but not Ä\ the divisions made by Mesnil (1966b) in Lindner 64g:885 — 896, have been ac- cepted. The Siphonini are transferred from the Exoristinae to the Tachininae, where they are certainly better placed. The data on the geographic distribution of the species have been obtained partly from the more recent and more reliable literature, and partly from collections deter- mi'ned by ti'y author. Moreover, Dr. Mesnil, Dr. Richter and Dr. Shima kindly pro- vided me wiith additional faunistic records, many of which were unpublished. download Biodiversity Heritage Library, http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/ HERTING, CATALOGUE OF PALEARCTIC TACHINIDAE 3 A total number of 1552 valid species are listed in this catalogue. They are classified in 398 genera, 33 tribesand 4 subfamilies. The synonymy lists comprise2086 specific and 651 generic names. In addition, 233 misidentifications of major importance are in- cluded. Unplaced genus-group names (nomina dubia) are listed as an appendix. Not included in this catalogue are more than 1000 doubtful species-group names (most of them by Robineau-Desvoidy) which cannot be definitely placed in a certain genus. Acknowledgements The preparation of this catalogue would not have been possible without the generous Coope- ration that I had from specialist colleagues and from the custodians of collections at other mu- seums. I owe an exceeding debt of gratitude to my teacher in tachinology, Dr. h. c. L. MESNIL (Delemont) for his friendly help and advice on which I could rely o ver the past thirty years. I am very grateful also to Dr. R.W. Crosskey (London), Dr. H. Shima (Fukuoka), Dr. D.M. WOOD (Ottawa) and cand. scient. S. ANDERSEN (Copenhagen) for informations on the types of certain species and for the permission to publish the resulting new synonymies in this catalogue. Dr. Vera Richter (Leningrad) and Dr. H. Shima (Fukuoka) kindly gave me additional fauni- stic data on the occurrence of certain species in the U.S.S.R. and Japan. A, Nr. 369 Explanatlon of lay-out Genera and subgenera are arranged in non-alphabetical order according to their presumed relationship. Valid names are underlined, their Synonyms are listed chrono- logically. Each name (valid or synonym) is followed by the author, year date, page, name of the type-species (original binomen), nature of type fixation (in parentheses), and the currently valid name of the type-species if there has been a change of name or a misidentification. Preoccupied genus-group names are marked as „preocc." (in pa- rentheses), citing also the author and year date of the senior homonym. A reference to the most up-to-date key to the species is given at the end of the generic synonymy list. Species are arranged alphabetically in the genus or subgenus to which they belong. Valid names are underlined, their Synonyms are indented and listed chronologically. Each name (valid or synonym) is followed by the author, year date, page, original ge- nus (in parentheses), sex oftype (if known), and type-locality (province and country of the type-locality in parentheses). For lectotypes, the reference of designation is given. Information on distribution (or additional localities for rare species) is separated from the type-locality by a bar. This is omitted, if the species is known only from the type- locality or the country of the type-locality. Subspecies, varieties and some important misidentifications are listed with the Syn- onyms in the same chronological sequence. If the Status as a geographic subspecies is justified, it is noted. Misidentifications are marked by placing the author's name in parentheses and adding the word „misident". A query mark before the name indicates that the synonymy is probable, but not definitely accepted.
