Introduction The NGO Info-centre, in cooperation with the Macedonian Centre for European Training (MCET), continues its monitoring of quality of media coverage of the European integration processes in Macedonia in 2011. The monitoring programme is financially supported by the Foundation Open Society Institute Macedonia (FOSIM). This report covers the period from May 10 to July 28, 2011. The analyses includes the coverage in eight daily newspapers (Utrinski vesnik; Dnevnik; Vest; Večer; Vreme; Nova Makedonija, Špic and Koha) and the central news programmes aired on eight TV stations that broadcast nationally and over the satellite (A1 TV; Kanal 5 TV; Sitel TV; Telma TV; MTV 1; Alfa TV; Alsat TV and MTV2). It should be noted that the coverage in Vreme and Špic dailies concluded through July 2, 2011, and for A1 TV the monitoring was concluded on July 19, 2011, the respective dates of their termination. -

OCCASIONAL PAPER N. 8 TTHHEE HHIISSTTOORRYY OOFF TTHHEE MMAACCEEDDOONNIIAANN TTEEXXTTIILLEE IINNDDUUSSTTRRYY WWIITTHH AA FFOOCCUUSS OONN SSHHTTIIPP Date: November 29th, 2005 Place: Skopje, Macedonia Introduction- the Early Beginnings and Developments Until 1945 The growth of the Macedonian textile sector underwent diverse historical and economic phases. This industry is among the oldest on the territory of Macedonia, and passed through all the stages of development. At the end of the 19th century, Macedonia was a territory with numerous small towns with a developed trade, especially in craftsmanship (zanaetchistvo). The majority of the population lived in rural areas, Macedonia characterized as an agricultural country, where most of the inhabitants satisfied their needs through own production of food. The introduction and the further development of the textile industry in Macedonia were mainly induced by the needs of the Ottoman army for various kinds of clothing and uniforms. Another reason for the emerging of the textile sector was to satisfy the needs of the citizens in the urban areas. An important factor for the advancement of this industry at that time was the developed farming, cattle breeding in particular. (stocharstvo). The first textile enterprises were established in the 1880‟s in the villages in the region of Bitola – Dihovo, Magarevo, Trnovo, and their main activity was production of woolen products. Only a small number of cotton products were produced in (zanaetciski) craftsmen workshops. The growth of textiles in this region was natural as Bitola, at that time also known as Manastir, was an important economic and cultural center in the European part of Turkey.[i] At that time the owners and managers of the textile industry were businessmen with sufficient capital to invest their money in industrial production. -

Briefing Political Trends & Dynamics The Far Right in the EU and the Western Balkans Volume 3 | 2020 POLITICAL TRENDS & DYNAMICS IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE A FES DIALOGUE SOUTHEAST EUROPE PROJECT Peace and stability initiatives represent a decades-long cornerstone of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s work in southeastern Europe. Recent events have only reaffirmed the centrality of Southeast European stability within the broader continental security paradigm. Both de- mocratization and socio-economic justice are intrinsic aspects of a larger progressive peace policy in the region, but so too are consistent threat assessments and efforts to prevent conflict before it erupts. Dialogue SOE aims to broaden the discourse on peace and stability in southeastern Europe and to counter the securitization of prevalent narratives by providing regular analysis that involves a comprehensive understanding of human security, including structural sources of conflict. The briefings cover fourteen countries in southeastern Europe: the seven post-Yugoslav countries and Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. It explores the various resentments the terms of the agreement provoked amongst ethnic Macedonians, in particular those dealing with ‘symbolic’ issues, and examines reasons for their rejection. These, the author argues, are related to the peculiarities of Macedonian national identity as well as to the political dynamics in the country. On the one hand, it is argued, many politicians feared for their patriotic credentials if they supported the agreement. On the other hand, large parts of Macedonian society saw the very existence of the Macedonian nation under threat. They regarded the state as the only protector of their contested national identity and therefore opposed the agreement’s goal to rewrite the constitution on purely civic terms with wide-ranging rights for the minorities. For many Macedonians, this meant a severe loss of security. Despite this, the author concludes that compromises could be found which allows for some optim ism for the future. I. Introduction On 8 August 2001 in Ohrid, the leaders of the Republic of Macedonia’s main political parties, that since 13 May 2001 had formed a shaky ‘National Unity Government’, struck a deal which aimed at ending the violent conflict between Macedonian security forces and armed Albanian extremists in the country. -

BIRN'S BALKAN INSIGHT, No.11, November 25, 2005 EUROPE SETS TERMS FOR MONTENEGRO'S INDEPENDENCE POLL Brussels is coming around to the idea that Montenegro may soon go it alone but is determined to ensure an independence referendum is free and fair. By: Nedjeljko Rudovic in Podgorica and Dragana Nikolic-Solomon in Belgrade Europe has given a green light for Montenegro to go ahead with an independence referendum but has set conditions the government in Podgorica may find hard to meet. Warning Montenegro not to jump the gun, on November 9 a troika of European Union representatives, including the British and Austrian ambassadors to the State Union of Serbia-Montenegro, said the poll must not take place before the standards and conditions for its organisation had been clarified. They reminded Montenegro that it will also have to wait for the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters, to issue a set of standards for calling and holding such a poll. The commission is due to announce its decision on December 16. While acknowledging the right of the authorities to hold a referendum, the troika urged them to reach a "wide consensus" with the Montenegrin opposition parties, Serbia and the international community. "The EU will not acknowledge a unilateral process," they said in a statement. Analysts say the government of Milo Djukanovic will have hard time meeting the conditions laid down by Europe. Above all, it faces a struggle to start a necessary dialogue with Montenegro's opposition parties, as well as with the Serbian authorities, currently preoccupied with the issue of Kosovo's future status. -

Macedonia was the only ex-Yugoslav state to gain its independence without a violent clash within the country or against other post-Yugoslav republics. However, in 2001 the two major ethnic groups, the Macedonians and Albanians fought against each other in an armed conflict, which resulted in the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement and promoted minority rights in the republic. Almost two decades after the conflict, ethnic tensions have been limited to sporadic hostilities usually prompted by sporting events and political rallies. Today, promoting tolerance among ethnic groups is one of the key issues in the political agenda of the main political parties, both Macedonian and Albanian. This paper will examine tolerance in the Republic of North Macedonia by analyzing the implementation of the Framework Agreement in the area of education, languages and minority rights. Moreover, the paper will present a research on trends in tolerance among youth from urban areas in North Macedonia conducted during the autumn of 2019.
