Dear Alumni, Greetings! Glad to see the next edition of ‘CASIANS,’ the PSG Arts Alumni Newsletter. With the inauguration of Manavar Manram for this academic year 2019-20, I am happy to note that the activities happening in the campus, departments and alumni association have increased greatly. It is delightful to see a plethora of activities highlighting this quarter. Congratulations on the grand success of ‘Curry Masala 2019,’ the annual event of our Alumni Association and wish to see more participation in the coming years. My hearty wishes to Mr.R.Mahendran, who has been elected the President of PSG Arts Alumni Association. It is a pride to see a number of our alumni for their notable appointments at various State and National offices. My best wishes to each one of them.

Dear PSG CAS Alumni Welcome to CASIANS – the PSG Arts Alumni Newsletter. It is my pleasure to present the 7th edition of the Newsletter (and my first). It aims to provide an overview of the happenings and accomplishments of the college and alumni.

The Silver Jubilee Reunion – PSG CAS ReCALL of the 1991 – 1994 batch was memorable with 571 alumni gathered to recollect and relish the memories of their college days.

Alumni of 1990 – 1993 B.Sc. Zoology batch also had their get-together.

PSG Arts Alumni Association celebrated Teachers’ Day. The association’s flagship event ‘Curry Masala’ was conducted in a grand manner inaugurated by Shri.L.Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG Institutions.

PSG Arts Alumni Association 12th Annual General Meeting was held on 9th September 2019, where we reviewed the year’s accounts and activities and planned for the year 2019–2020. I thank Shri.V.Lakshminarayanaswamy, immediate past President for the successful directorate of Alumni Association. I also take this opportunity to welcome the New Office Bearers and Executive Committee Members.

I take great pleasure in congratulating our alumnus, Shri.Jayakumar Ramdass for being appointed as President of Industrial Infrastructure Association (COINDIA) on 22nd July 2019 and Vice President of Coimbatore Management Association, Dr.R.Nandagopal, alumnus of B.Com. & M.Com. 1975- 1980 for being awarded as Best Business School Director. Shri.T.Rajkumar, alumnus of B.A. Economics 1985–1988 batch for being appointed as Chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, (CITI, the Apex body of all Textile Associations in our country).

PSG College of Arts & Science Alumni Association has a full-fledged office from the year 2007. The Alumni Executive Committee meets once in three months. One of the main purposes of our Alumni Association is to support a network of former graduates who will, in turn, help to raise the profile of the college. They participate as mentors and donors for the students. Alumni Association awards scholarships to meritorious students. Every year, our alumni association celebrates Teachers’ Day and honors all the past and present teachers of the college. It organizes two to three fund raising programmes with the support of the Office Bearers and Committee Members to help the students through scholarships. Number of alumni get-togethers and Silver Jubilee Reunions are organized by the PSG Arts Alumni Association.

— 3 — Inauguration of Manavar Manram (Aided) Manavar Manram (Aided) was inaugurated on 26th July 2019 at GRD Auditorium. Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneswaran, Director, Super Specialty PSG Hospitals, Coimbatore, was the Chief Guest. The elected Office Bearers of the Manavar Manram (Aided) and Student Representatives of Department Associations (Aided), Clubs and Forums were sworn in during the investiture ceremony. The formal function was followed by cultural events by students of the aided programmes.

Inauguration of Manavar Manram (Unaided) Manavar Manram (Unaided) was inaugurated on 27th July 2019 at GRD Auditorium. Dr.G.Subramanian, Associate Professor, Department of English, Government Arts College was the Guest of Honour. The elected Office Bearers of the Manavar Manram (Unaided) and student representatives of Department Associations (Unaided), Clubs and Forums were sworn-in during the investiture ceremony followed by cultural events by students of unaided programmes.

Launch of Young Indians

The Young Indians (Yi) Launch for the academic year 2019-20 was done on 1st August 2019 at Sathyam Hall. Around 96 students had registered. Dr.A.Priya Dharshini, Chair - Project Yuva, Yi - Coimbatore Chapter, introduced the functioning of Young Indians (Yi) to the new members. The Whats’ and Whys’ were explained by Ms.Deepa Sivarathna, Yi Institution Chair, PSGCAS. Ms.Rajalakshmi Vishnu, Chair - Project Masoom, Yi Coimbatore Chapter, and Mr.Anush, Masoom, Institution Chair introduced Project Masoom. The previous year Yi members shared their experiences.

Independence Day Celebrations

The NCC and NSS of PSG CAS organized the 73rd Independence Day celebrations on 15th August 2019. Dr.D.Brindha, Principal hoisted the flag and Dr.T.Kannaian, Secretary felicitated the event. Dr.K.Chitra, Associate Professor of Clinical Nutrition was the Chief Guest.

— 4 — Vinayagar Chathurthi Celebration Vinayagar Chathurthi was celebrated on 2nd September 2019. Students from the Department of Carnatic Music performed bhajans and special poojas were performed at the Vinayagar and Saraswathi temples in the campus.

Placement Centre Inauguration The new placement centre was inaugurated on 16.09.2019 by Dr.T.Kannaian, Secretary, and Dr.D.Brindha, Principal, in the presence of Mr.V.Saravanaa, Head – PR & CC, PSG Institutions. Thiru L. Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons’ Charities, and Ms.V.Vimala, CFO, PSG & Sons’ Charities took part in the pooja following the inauguration.

Wizards ‘19

Wizards’ 19 was organised by the Manavar Manram (Aided) on 20th September 2019 at GRD Auditorium. Dr.Brindha, Principal was the Chief Guest. Cash prizes worth Rs.1,25,000/- were distributed to winners of 23 off-stage and 3 on-stage events.

Heartbeat 2019 Heartbeat 2019, the inter-departmental cultural and literary function of Manavar Manram (UA), was held on 21st September 2019 at GRD Auditorium. Dr.D.Brindha, Principal, was the Chief Guest. Distribution of proficiency for rank holders of all unaided departments was followed by various on- stage events.

Wahap Cell - Street Play

WAHAP (Women’s Anti-Harassment and Protection) Cell of PSGCAS organized a street play, ‘MIRRORS’ on 27th September 2019. The play highlighted general social taboos and myths with regard to gender and called for action on them through self- introspection.

— 5 — Academic Activities Research Paper Presentation in International Congress

Dr.A.Anguraj, Vice Principal, presented a research paper titled ‘Existence and Exponential Stability of a Class of Impulsive Neutral Stochastic Integro-Differential Equations with Poisson Jumps’ in the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM - 2019) held at Universitat de Valencia, Valencia, Spain during 15th to 19th July 2019. He also chaired a technical session for paper presentation.

Guest lecture on Cyber Security & Block Chain Technology The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Technology organized a guest lecture on ‘Cyber Security & Block Chain Technology’ for III B.Sc. Computer Science and Information Technology students on 24th July 2019. Dr.Harish Ramani, Director & Chief Technology Officer, Internettechies Solution Pvt. Ltd., was the resource person. Around 170 students participated and made it an interactive and informative session.

Guest lecture on ‘Interpersonal Effectiveness’ The Department of Software Systems organized a guest lecture on ‘Interpersonal Effectiveness’ for the students of M.Sc. Software Systems and Management Science on 13th August 2019. Dr.V.Sri Priya delivered the welcome address and Dr.B.Murali, Head of the Department of Software Systems introduced the Chief Guest. The lecture was engaged by Dr.Patturaja Selvaraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Management, Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania.

— 6 — National Seminar on ‘Current Trends in Nanoscience and Nano-Biotechnology’ A one-day national seminar on ‘Current Trends in Nanoscience and Nano-Biotechnology’ was organized by the Department of Biotechnology on 16th August 2019. Dr.V.S.Mahendran, Associate Professor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Dr.Pon.Sathya Moorthy, Assistant Professor, Department of Nanoscience & Technology, Agricultural University and Dr.V.Sankar, Vice Principal & Professor from the Department of Pharmaceutics, PSG College of Pharmacy were the resource persons.

One-day Workshop on ‘Acquiring Proficiency in Communication Skills for International Business’ A one-day workshop on ‘Acquiring Proficiency in Communication Skills for International Business’ was conducted by the Department of B.A. (Hons) International Business on 21st August 2019 at Sathyam Hall. Around 70 students from I and II years participated. Mr.Anjesh Kumar, a leading buyer communicator for Textile Export Industry was the Chief Guest.

Book Publication and Awards Dr.V.Vignesh, Assistant Professor of Tamil, published a Tamil book, ‘Ilakkiyapozhil’ (ISBN No.: 978-80-93541-13-6). He was also conferred with ‘Perasiyamamani’ award by Tamilnadu Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, Kottaram on 25th August 2019 and ‘Silamboli Chellapanar Virudhu’ at Amirthalaya Educational College, Jollarpet on 14th September 2019.

National Workshop on ‘Stem Cell Research and Techniques’

The Department of Biochemistry organized a national workshop on ‘Stem Cell Research and Techniques’ in the Vocational Biotech Lab on 30th August 2019. Around 36 participants from 10 different institutions attended the workshop. Dr.B.Ragavan, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Biochemistry and

— 7 — Convener of this workshop welcomed the gathering. Dr.D.Brindha, Principal, chaired the workshop and delivered the presidential address. Dr.T.Kannaian, Secretary, felicitated the event. Chief Guest, Dr.A.Mangala Gowri, Professor, Department of Animal Biotechnology, Centre for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai, released the Training Manual CD and handled the forenoon session on ‘Stem Cells in Regenerative medicine.’ Mr.T.Arun Kumar, Manager-South, Labmate (Asia) Pvt. Ltd, Chennai, handled the afternoon session on ‘Introduction to Cell Separation.’ Dr.D.Brindha, Principal, distributed certificates to the participants. The National workshop was supported by STEMCELL Technologies, Canada and Labmate (Asia) Pvt. Ltd, Chennai.

Extracurricular Activities

Pride Film Festival

Pride Film Festival was organized by the Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media at GRD Auditorium on 31st July 2019. Kalki Subramaniam, actor, author, activist, artist and founder of Sahodari Foundation was the Chief Guest. Bridget Paul Shibu, Operations Manager, Art Houz, Coimbatore was the Guest of Honour. Short films to created awareness on LGBT issues were screened followed by student interaction with the Guests.

State-Level Intercollegiate Literary Competitions Tamil Nadu Tamil Kalai Ilakkiya Mandram organised a State-Level Intercollegiate Literary Competition on 13th July 2019. Ms.K.Roshini Priya, III B.A. Tamil Literature, PSG CAS won the second prize in oratorical competition. Mr.M.Tamliselvan, III B.A. Tamil Literature, PSG CAS won the second prize with a cash award of Rs.7000/- and Ms.S.Ramya, II B.A. Tamil Literature won the third prize with a cash award of Rs.5000/- in the essay writing competition held on 9th August 2019, .

— 8 — Report on Pre – Placement Talk In view of Deloitte placement for UG final year students, the Department of Computer Technology conducted a pre-placement event on 14th and 16th August 2019. Mr.Vishnu Sankarlal, Associate Analyst, Deloitte, Bangalore, an alumnus of the Department of Computer Science was the Guest Speaker.

Visual Arts Workshop:

The Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media organized a workshop on Visual Arts from 28th to 30th August 2019 and on 3rd September 2019. Mr.Vignesh Raj, artist, Assistant Professor, Lalit Kalakshetra, Raviraj Institute of Arts & Culture, Mr.Elangovan, freelance artist from Coimbatore and Mr.Illayaraja, freelance artist from Chennai were the resource persons. The workshop focused on the fundamentals of visual arts, application of art skills in story boarding, shading techniques and portrait drawing. Around 120 students of first year from the department participated.

Guest Lecture on ‘Service above Self’ A guest lecture on ‘Service above Self’ was jointly organized by the Department of B.A. (Hons) International Business and Department of M.Com. - International Business on 5th September 2019 to create awareness on the importance of humanity and social work. Around 180 students from both the departments attended the lecture. Mr.N.Nithyanandam, UN Volunteer and a renowned social worker was the Chief Guest.

Acting and Theatre Workshop The Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media organized a workshop on ‘Acting and Theatre’ on 5th & 6th September 2019 at Library Exam Hall. Mr.Boominathan, NSD Trained Theatre Artist, was the resource person. Around 40 interested final year students from the Department were trained on scripting a scene, mise-en-scene and basic acting & theatre skills.

Innopreneurs Club conducted a ‘Basic Crochet’ workshop on 12th September 2019 at Brahmam Hall. Mrs.R.Selvapriya, Crafts Specialist, Niveditha Creations, Coimbatore was the resource person. This program encouraged the students to learn a new art to bring out their creativity, which could be developed into a business opportunity.

Guest Lecture on News Reporting & Consumption

The Department of Visual Communication & Electronic Media organized a guest lecture on ‘News Reporting and Consumption’ at the New Commerce Conference Hall on 12th September 2019. Mr.D.Andrew Sam, Founder & CEO, Simplicity News App, Coimbatore and Mr.Arvind Subramanian, Founder, D-DAY.OI & Chief Business Officer at Maestro Technologies, Coimbatore were the resource persons. Focus was on news reporting & consumption, changes in news reporting, consumption for modern news readers and awareness on fake news culture.

I-quiz Quiz Club and Innopreneurs Club of PSG CAS organized i-quiz at Library Conference Hall on 13th September 2019 for the students of our college. The quiz focused on innovations in products, services, brands and people involved in business. Around 35 teams participated in the preliminary round and six were selected for the finals.

— 10 — An Interaction on New Media Platforms for Presenting Social Issues & Sensitizing Students’ Volunteerism The Department of Visual Communication & Electronic Media organized an interaction on ‘New Media Platforms for Presenting Social Issues & Sensitizing Students’ Volunteerism’ at GRD Auditorium on 18th September 2019. Mr.G.Kumaresan, Social Policy Specialist and Field Officer, UNICEF, India was the Chief Guest.

Crafts Bazaar

Crafts Bazaar - a one-day attractive display cum sale of crafts was organized by Innopreneurs Club on 19th September 2019 at Brahmam Hall. The event was inaugurated by Dr.D.Brindha, Principal, in the presence of Dr.A.Anguraj, Vice Principal, Dr.R.Swarnalatha, Faculty Co-ordinator of Innopreneurs Club, Ms.Rhea Lund, President of Innopreneurs Club, members of IIC and Innopreneurs club.

Students churned their creative minds and made attractive clay products, resin jewellery, customized silver jewellery, explosion box, handcrafted home decors, thread jewellery, nail-art, organic soaps, creams, face packs, polymer based key chains, magic greeting cards and photo-booth.

Quiz Competition

The students of III B.Sc. Biotechnology organised a quiz competition on General Biotechnology on 19th September 2019. The quiz was based on basic biology and application in biotechnological aspects. The winners were appreciated with prizes.

The Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media organized a Script Writing workshop on 23rd & 25th September 2019. Mr.N.Krishnakanth, Script Writer, Nakkalites was the resource person who focused on script writing for feature films. Around 110 final year students from the Department participated.

Entrepreneurship Development Cell - Report on Mou Signing Ceremony, Le Expo and Start- Up Challenge

As part of the directive from MHRD’s (Ministry of Human Resource Development) National Innovation and Start-up Policy for Students and Faculties, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of PSG CAS and FICCI FLO, Coimbatore Chapter organized an MoU signing ceremony, IE Expo and initiation of Student Campus Ventures on 24th September 2019 at GRD Auditorium. The event was to foster an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem among the students of PSG CAS, motivate them to contribute for economic growth as well as national development.

A total of 9 student campus ventures dealing with different products and services under the guidance of faculty mentors from various departments were launched through PSG CAS Incubation Centre. Institution Innovation Council along with Entrepreneurship Development Cell organised ‘Interdepartmental Innovation Entrepreneurship Exhibition Start-up Challenge’ in 5 thematic areas focusing on National Sustainable Development Goals.

— 12 — An MoU was signed and exchanged between Dr.D.Brindha, Principal and Mrs.Poonam Bafna, Chairperson, FICCI FLO, Coimbatore Chapter in the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr.Anand Pillai, Managing Director, Leadership Matters Inc., Bangalore, in order to initiate industry academia partnership, offer mentorship for student entrepreneurs, support ED (Entrepreneurship Development) programmes and take up industrial visits and research.

Mrs.N.Krishnaveni, Coordinator, Entrepreneur Development Cell, PSG CAS welcomed the gathering, Dr.D.Brindha, Principal delivered the presidential address and Mrs.Poonam Bafna, Chairperson, FICCI FLO addressed the gathering. Chief Guest, Mr.Anand Pillai interacted with the students. The dignitaries released the Annual Report of EDC, PSG CAS for the year 2018-19. Cash prizes along with certificates were distributed to the winners of IE Expo.

Dr.R.Swaranalatha, Organising Committee Member, EDC and Faculty mentor, Innopreneurs Club proposed the vote of thanks for the three-in-one event.

National Level Quiz Competition Winners

Students of PSG CAS participated in the National Level Quiz Competition held at SNMV College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore on 26th September 2019. Over 200 teams from various colleges from different states participated in the competition and students of PSG CAS won the first two places. Mr. Shricharan, II B.Com. (PA) and Mr.Aditya, I B.Com. were the winners and Mr.D.Rohan, II B.Com. and Mr.P.Barath, II B.Com. (CMA) were the runners up.

— 13 — Workshop on Plant Tissue Culture Techniques The Department of Biotechnology organised a workshop on ‘Plant Tissue Culture Techniques’ on 27th September 2019. The main objective of the workshop was to sensitize the students on how to carry out basic plant tissue culture techniques through hands-on learning experience and to provide a platform to expand their creative thinking skills. Mr.Balarama Krishna Ancha organised a hand-on training on callus induction and micro propagation of plants.

Visual Effects Workshop The Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media organized a Visual Effects Workshop on 27th September 2019. Mr.N.Murugeshwaran (VARAN), Visual Effects Artist & VFX Producer was the resource person who stressed the importance of visual effects in film making to the final year students of the department.

Extension Activities

Handloom Day Fashion Show 2019

The 3rd edition of Handloom Fashion Show was held on 14th August 2019 at GRD Auditorium. The event was jointly organized by Covai Makkal Sevai Maiyam, Department of Costume Design and Science, PSG CAS, Center for Women’s Studies, PSG CAS and Dream Zone School of Creative Studies to promote the value of handloom products among the youth population of Coimbatore. Dr.D.Brindha, Principal welcomed the gathering. Ms.Vanathi Srinivasan, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu and Founder of Covai Makkal Sevai Maiyam presided over the event. The Chief Guest of the event was Ms.Poornima

— 14 — Bhakyaraj, actress and entrepreneur. Ms.Radhika Prithvi, Managing Director, Tharakaram Silk House and Mr.C.R. Boopalan, Center Head of Dream Zone, Coimbatore were the Guests of Honour. Students from various colleges across Coimbatore donned handloom costumes and participated in the fashion show. Ms.Latha Kalingarayar, Ms.Priya Moorthi and Ms. Jayanthi were the jury members. Around 53 colleges participated in this intercollegiate event. The preliminary round was conducted at the respective colleges. Selected students from around 1650 were shortlisted for the grand finale held at PSG CAS.

The title winners were Maharaja - Mr.Ajay Krishna, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science, Arasan - Mr.Poovarasan, CSI BACAS and Ilavarasan - Mr.Devendar, PSG CAS and consolation prizes were awarded to Mr.Harish, Government Arts College and Mr.Akash, Nehru Arts & Science College. The title winners in the female category were Maharani - Ms.Mitra, SNS CAS, Arasi - Ms.Bhavadharani, PSG CAS and Ilavarasi - Ms.Muthulakshmi, Hindusthan CAS and consolation prizes for Ms.Sneha, RVS CAS and Ms.Kiruthika, Sankara CAS. Exuberance 2K19

The students of the Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management organized a National- Level Intercollegiate Hospitality Competition, ‘Exuberance 2K19’ on 25th September 2019. Students from various colleges all over India participated in various competitions including Culinary King, Shake and Stir, Sculpting, Floral Fragrance, Tackle The Trick and Quizoholic.

World Tourism Day Celebrations The students of B.Sc. Catering Science and Hotel Management and B.Voc. Hospitality Management participated in the World Tourism Day Celebrations at Ooty on 27th September 2019. The event was organized in coordination with the Nilgiris Hotel and Restaurant Association (NHRA). Around 43 students along with staff members were taken to YWCA Academy followed by a road rally from the Botanical Garden to YWCA, Anandhagiri, Ooty. The Department of Costume Design and Fashion of PSGCAS also performed a designer show during this event.

The Department of B.Com. (Banking and Insurance) organized a guest lecture on ‘Awareness on Career Opportunities in Insurance Sector’ on 16th September 2019. Around 360 students of the Department of B.Com. (Foreign Trade) and B.Voc. (Banking, Stock & Insurance) attended the program at the New Commerce Block Seminar Hall. Mr.V.Vetrivel, Mr.Sankara Rama Narayanan, Mr.C.Jagdees Chandran and Mr.N.Nasser from the Coimbatore Insurance Institute were the resource persons.

Curry Masala – 2019

PSG Arts Alumni Association organized ‘Curry Masala – 2019,’ the Food and Cultural Fete in a grand manner with the support of the Department of Catering Science & Hotel Management, Department of Costume Design & Fashion, Department of Carnatic Music and the Music Club on 7th September 2019 at GRD Auditorium.

Also present were the Heads of various Departments of PSG CAS, staff members, students and common public. Shri V Lakshminarayanasamy, President, PSG Arts Alumni Association awarded prizes to the best designers of the fashion show. Convener, CA.L.Kamesh delivered the vote of thanks. The success of this festival was also a combined effort of sponsors and co-sponsors.

12th Annual General Meeting:

The 12th Annual General meeting was held on 9th September 2019 at Sangamam Hall. Shri.V.Lakshminarayanasamy, President, PSG Arts Alumni Association presided over the meeting and welcomed the members. Shri J Prithiviraj, Secretary presented the activities of the Association for the year 2018–19. He highlighted the steps taken by the Executive Committee for improving the financial performance of the Association and Scholarships provided to the deserving students.

The Executive Committee report was adopted by a resolution proposed by Shri.L.Gopalakrishnan, Trustee, PSG Institution, alumnus of PSG CAS and seconded by Dr.T.Kannaian - Secretary, PSG CAS, also an alumnus of PSG CAS.

The accounts of the association as presented by Dr.B.Ramesh, Treasurer, were adopted by a resolution proposed by Dr.D.Brindha - Principal, PSG CAS and also an alumna of PSG CAS and seconded by Shri. Madhan Mohan, alumnus of PSG CAS. The members appreciated the efforts of the Executive Committee for improving the financial performance of the association.

Shri.C.R.Sathyanarayanan, alumnus of PSG CAS proposed S.Lakshminarayanan Associates as the Auditors of the association for 2019-20. This was seconded by Shri.C.Balasubramanian, alumnus of PSG CAS, and passed unanimously. The Executive Board was authorized to fix the remuneration.

Shri.V.Lakshminarayanasamy, Immediate Past President conducted the election for the Office Bearers and Executive Members for the period of 2019–22. Shri.R.Mahendran has been appointed as President for the period 2019–22.
