PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 120th Annual report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

Our season from a playing perspective was mixed.

It was heartening to see our Prem women become a competitive unit and developing a winning culture. We were fortunate to have the services of two Scottish Internationals Ollie Rae and Sam Haggo, and whilst there is no certainty they will return we are working hard on player recruitment to ensure our young team has the benefit of age and experience as they grow as a team.

My special thanks to Andrew MacKenzie for the stirling work he put in managing our Girls, and I am confident that we will go from strength to strength in the seasons to come.

Our morning mens grades- Prems, 2A and 2 B enjoyed mixed success. It would be fair to say we struggled at times to get full teams on the field.

The World Cup didn’t help us, with players away to watch those games, and I and the committee felt for Glen Hooper, as he battled every week to get 11 players on the park in Prems and 2a.

During the winter we have been working very hard on our playing numbers and recruiting quality players to bolster our ranks.

As this report goes to press, I know we have two new players recruited for Prems and also Kelvin Scott a very accomplished ex Prem Player who will Captain and manage the 2a side.

Chris Harris will Captain the Prem side and continue as head coach, and this year the Prems will be managed by Mike Dolden.

Doldy played many many years for our Prems, and in his earlier years he played as a semi professional in the UK. He has a strong coaching Pedigree having coached Syds to a one day title when Greg O’Reilly was our Captain and prior to that coached Woolston for a couple of years when they first entered the Prem competition.

This year also, Geordie Dann has agreed to manage the 2a and 2b sides with a particular emphasis on linking with our school leavers coming into the club, and also ensuring the sides are organised with structured training nights and individual skills based coaching.

Glen Hooper is back involved in playing day management, and has some coaching duties, and we wish him well with that. Hopefully we will still see him around the club as his son Angus will be playing in the morning squad. I would also like to make mention again about our afternoon sides. Whilst it is important for our top teams to perform it is equally important that our afternoon grades enjoy being part of our club and perform well.

These teams are the back bone of our club, and as President I wish to formally acknowledge their involvement from 3rd grade to Presidents, and trust that you can come back and enjoy your cricket for many seasons to come.

I know the Hospital team has struggled for numbers but I earnestly hope that we can retain this team not just for our club but for the history of that teams involvement in club cricket over many many years.

Our facilities continue to be a focus for your committee.

Whilst our astro all weather practice facility is standing up well, we acknowledge that our grass practice facility is adequate but not meeting our growing needs.

We still have advice on file from Council that our park is to receive a major upgrade to surface and drainage, but council still will not commit to a date for this.

Planning going forward thus remains difficult and uncertain. I am pleased to report that Tom O’carroll our groundsman has reported that he will be back this season and we know he prepares our playing blocks well.

You will see from our annual accounts that funding the expenses of our club is a struggle. We continue to approach corporates to secure funding but in these difficult times this is a big ask.

At this time I can report that your committee is in ongoing discussions with a major sponsor for our Prem womens team…..watch this space!

In saying that, we also continue to review all areas of our expense line, but also ensure that all members enjoy the best gear, grounds and facilities we are able to provide.

Our sincere thanks must go to all of our sponsors and funders who continue to support us. Air Rescue Services Ltd NZ Community Trust Pub Charities Southern Community Trust CMCA Coaching Grants Cricket Express.

Without the support of these trusts and Organisations, we simply would not have a cricket Club.

Finally my special thanks and appreciation to all of our committee who work willingly and tirelessly to ensure your cub is well managed and continues to grow.We are all committed to ensure our club can continue to be the cricket club of choice now and in the future. Graham Harris President

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Another season has come to an end with great turnout at prize giving on the last night of the season. Good to see most of the teams there. It was a close fought battle for many of the trophies with many only being decided on the last day of the season. Well done to all the winners.Team results were mixed with the 3C Cardinals coming close to winning the grade but losing the final on the last day of the season.

This year saw two new sides and a large numbers of new players throughout the grades helping to build up the strength and stability to sides. They certainly enjoyed their time with the club this season and look forward to having them back next season. Again this season we had very loyal teams to the club, a large majority having been with the club for years. And we as a committee thank them for all their efforts and support over the season in helping to keep the club in fine shape.

Over the season many of the women and youth players had the opportunity to play in the senior section of the club when they didn’t have games in the competition. This certainly gave these players more experience to play in other teams in the club. Good to see everyone keen and enjoying their cricket. The continued development of our women's section leaves the club in good shape for next season. The Premier Women made a huge impression this year winning a few games and coming close in others. The Scottish girls Ollie and Sam having a big impact on the side, both on and off the field, and providing top level coaching for the women. A big thanks must also go to Andrew McKenzie and Emma Scarf for their efforts with the women's section.

On the social scene, as already mentioned, the prize giving had a great turnout with over 100 people there on the night. Unfortunately the quiz nite late in the season didn’t have as many teams as in the past but was still a good nite and ended in a close result - thanks Bert for your efforts. As a club we need to look at ways to create a more active social scene within the club. Thanks again to the bowling club for their support and use of the clubrooms. Certainly a great place to go back to after a game for a drink, TV (sky) and bowls.

Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on the club website and on Facebook. . Andrew Chisnall Club Captain

OBITUARIES

It is with great sadness the club and our wider cricket community acknowledge the passing away of Mike Shrimpton on 13th June 2015 at the age of 74.

Michael John Froud Shrimpton was born in Fielding on June 23 1940 and was raised in rural Manawatu. As a bright student and talented sportsman, the rural lifestyle agreed with Mike and no doubt had much to do with shaping him into a person of good character with sound values. As a young man Mike loved his cricket and rugby and after moving to Hawkes Bay struck up a great friendship with another Bay sporting icon, Blair Furlong, for whom Mike would fondly recant stories of their shenanigans on and off the sports field. Mike was selected to play for Central districts in the 1961/62 season and must have immediately caught the eye of the national selectors as he was picked to play for the following season against England in the second test at the Basin.

Mikes first class carrier spaned thirteen years and over 120 matches during which time he played a further seven tests for New Zealand and captained Central Districts. At the conclusion of his playing days Mike took up coaching which complemented his career in teaching and enabled him to actively participate in the sport he most loved. His coaching career included stints in Holland, England, a tour of Pakistan with the NZ under 19 side and as a Black Caps selector and development coach. However Mike’s finest hour was undoubtedly his success with the White Ferns who won the Women’s Cricket world cup in 2000.

Coach or Shrimpo as he was affectionately known joined Sydenham as head coach in 2005 at a time when, under the CCA’s new promotion relegation scheme, our senior men’s side had been relegated to suburban cricket. Mike took over a team low in confidence and at a low ebb and quickly installed a new culture and discipline within the team.

Mike’s coaching style and professionalism was infectious and rubbed off throughout the whole club. 2005 saw the senior’s win the combined two day competition and make it threw to the one day semi-finals and in 2006 return to the premier two day competition finishing third but winning the one day final against the combined HSOBOC side in emphatic style. The club also for the first time in forty years went on to win the Peterson Shield.

The efforts that Mike put into the club as a coach, committee man, groundsman and friend to all cannot be understated. In two years the club had rebuilt it’s player base to be one of the largest in and success on and off the field continued to flow as the club attracted a number of new players and previous members returned to the club.

Unfortunately the 2010 earthquake caused considerable disruption to the Shrimpton’s family business consequently Mike and Davina were forced to relocate back to Napier.

Mike will be remembered for not only his coaching prowess but also his kindness and humility. He loved his cricket and loved being part of Sydenham. His dry sense of humour coupled with a piercing cold stare could unsettle any foe on the field but was soon washed away with a glass of Claret and his wide beaming smile in the club rooms after the game.

In 2007 he received the Bert Sutcliffe Medal for outstanding service to .

We will all miss him very much.

PREMIER MEN TEAM REPORT

After a solid season the year before, there were high expectations for this season. Unfortunately losing Arnie Yugaraja as the teams top run scorer and the inability to continue with the great start to the Two Day competition after Christmas, saw the team languishing towards the bottom of the table.

With only two hundreds scored and ten half centuries, across 23 batting innings, the team struggled to put enough pressure on the opposition teams through the scoreboard. A big congrats to Dylan for his 151*, unfortunately he only managed another fifty (in the second innings of the century), Talor Scott managed three fifties and looks promising for next season with a more settled position in the order.

Of note is the performance of Mitchel Gardner, who managed to top the taking for this side in all three versions of the game this season, and was the leading wicket taker for the Premier Metro Christchurch competition. Also of note is the performance of Tom Agnew, who was second in all formats to Mitch, having a very good return for the season with the ball.

On another positive note, it was great to see the performances of Talor Scott and Finn Loader who have made impressive starts to their Premier careers. As mentioned Talor managed three half centuries, and Finn scored a century on debut, and managed another half century before the end of the season. Robbie Selbie and Ryan Jones have made positive starts as well, and just need to increase the twenties and thirties into fifties or higher.

With the average age of the premier side being closer to twenty, there is lots of potential for this side to increase its performance, however, it cannot just be relied on to happen on Saturdays, there needs to be a greater work ethic in trainings and a greater desire to play premier cricket. This starts with consistent pressure from seconds and their individual performances and desire to play at the premier level.

This season I have had a number of conversations with the ‘Canterbury A’ selectors who are interested in players who perform at this club level. Our Achilles’ remains the inability to score runs, putting pressure on the opposition sides, as we have one of the best bowling attacks in the grade, albeit in need of a quality spinning option - if only we could score around the 250 mark, we would bowl teams out. Fielding has been disappointing, with too many dropped catches, and not enough pressure through ground fielding and hitting the stumps when required

PREMIER WOMEN TEAM REPORT

The Sydenham women’s section came under great focus from our committee again this season. Our second season in the women’s premier competition started with a great base of players. However to strengthen our squad we went about sourcing overseas international players as our aim was to start winning games.

Scottish internationals Olivia Rae and Samantha Haggo made their way from Edinburgh to Christchurch to join our squad. Olivia took the position of our coach and worked hard in developing us a great training schedule and merging us into a tight-knit team.

We trained twice a week under our new player-coach and our hard work paid off when we won our first game since we re-entered the top club competition. This was against East Christchurch Shirley CC at Burwood Park, our third game into the season. Olivia was fantastic with the bat and scored our only century of the season with 104. Chasing 212, we won by three wickets with eight overs to spare.

Former White Fern Maria Fahey joined us in February (during her Indian coaching off- season) and worked alongside Olivia coaching and mentoring us for a few valuable weeks. Her long term aim being to strengthen our squad and help bring the women’s competition back up to the standards of the 90s and 00s.

Olivia and Samantha were a great asset to our team. Olivia went on to pick up three 50s as well as her 100, and Samantha a 50 also. Overall we played 12 ODIs of which we won three, and three T20 games of which we won one. This was a great improvement on the previous year and I am confident that that will improve again next season. All the girls gained a lot from the coaching of both Olivia and Maria, both brought their amazing enthusiasm for the game and that seemed to rub off on the girls. Commitment was fantastic and spirits were high, always driving hard for our next win.

Strong numbers and well coached players coming through from our Junior girls is a big positive for the future and my aim is to see them step through the div1 grade to prems over the next few years. Exciting times ahead for Sydenham womens cricket

2A GRADE TEAM REPORT

On some aspects a season to forget, full of frustrations, performances not in line with our potential, and results that did not go our way.

I am going to focus on a couple of highlights. Notably the outright win in the two day round against OBC – with between 9 to 10 actual players in attendance we managed to take first innings and then claim an outright win. The round before saw the start of a fight back against Easts, when we were in the preverbal dongers ditch, when Dan ‘Circuband’ Thompson 157 stepped up on only one leg and was assisted by Ryan Jones 70 to actually set a target for Easts to have to chase down.

Anyway to the OBC game. With a rain affected first day, we were set to chase down 216, overnight being 50 odd for 2, and with only 6 players there at the start, we batted on, and on, taking 74 overs to reach their total with Mayuresh 107 Daniel ‘Circuband’ Thompson 35 and then go past it by a few before being all out at Lunch. They needed a result out of the game and batted the middle session, setting us 157 to win outright – Dan scoring 63 , Mayuresh 50 and George Moore a handy 30 not out secured an outright win for the lads. There lies the potential that some of these lads have. With more consistent performance they will challenge for a place in Prems next season.

The one day highlights were playing Marist twice, beating them in the round robin by 10 wickets, Matt Day 32* and Matt McCall 50* wrapping the game up within 10 overs – Then in the playoff game, beaten them by 8 wickets, Braden Gardner (the other Gardner) scoring a nice 66*. The other One-day comp highlight was the irrepressible Samantha Haggo – ‘yes I am wearing either Scottish or Magicians rep gear!’ taking a wicket in the one day game against Riccarton and then having numerous Friend request from Tim Yeadon – he wants it!

T20 Highlights – Robbie Selbie 83 versus Marist, Braden Gardner (the other Gardner) 79 versus Burnside and Matt (Scottie) McCall 72* versus Saints, but the highlight was again our wee Scottish lasses 4-0-12-3 versus Easts, second best figures for T20 comp for this team.

So for the train spotters out there, we had two hundreds scored, Daniel ‘Circuband ‘Thompson 157 and Mayuresh Khanolkar 107 and 8 half centuries. We had 5 - 5 wicket bags for the season, Alex Brailey 7-38 versus Saints, Finn McEwen 6-31 versus Marist, Hayden Day 5-57 versus Easts, Blue Hamel 5-64 versus Marist and Finally Mayuresh Khanolkar 5-77 versus Burnside.

Throughout the season we used 59 players (yes – have a look at the stats page) 25 of them played/batted in only one game, 42 bowlers were used throughout the three competitions. We have 41 players on a list for the top two sides and still play Second A short – We started the two day comp in October playing 8 a side against Easts and the last two day round in March, versus Burnside was over in a day, we started with 6 players, had seven then finished with 6 players – no wonder we were beaten outright in a day. Huge thanks to Andrew Moults, played the last game with a broken hand, maned up and deserves a DB.

To everyone who has been pestered or bothered by my constant requests to play, a huge thanks, to Andrew Chisnall, who had to deal with my constant texts, emails and phone calls from Tuesday through to Friday, a massive thanks.

To the core players who did turn up week after week, irrespective of the game scenarios, Ben, constantly leading the team, Mayuresh, Daniel, Andrew, Matt, Josh, George and Angus – my personal thanks – It has been embarrassing from my perspective and it was not how I wanted this team to run, but we are now one step closer to where we need to be. Our attendance at trainings is very good, attitude is great, and we are able to laugh at ourselves, and others easily.

To the thirty odd players that ‘Filled’ in, a huge thanks, without your effort we would have been unable to field a team. Some of you experienced solid personal performances at a higher grade; some could make the transition to this grade if it fits in with your desire to play semi-serious cricket. Hopefully you enjoyed your experience, and if I missed the opportunity to express my thanks, I am truly thankful for your contribution.

Lastly, we did have some laughs, some good individual performances, some good results, and a few laughs. But for us to continue this way, we cannot have the same or similar issues next season! The premier team needs competition, from a performance and training perspective, and an attitude that reflects the level of cricket being played, next season has no excuses.

2B GRADE TEAM REPORT – SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

The season was a mixed bag in the way of results but a very enjoyable and memorable one. We lost Dr Jack Auty to Manchester University early in the season, John Carter to fatherhood and Nick Carter to a club transfer debacle. We even lost Daniel Loughton for most of the season when he broke his leg fielding on the boundary. The doctor on the team told him it was a bad sprain and he walked to our camp and watched the rest of the game. Nine of our past, present and fill in members were away frequently following the Cricket World Cup around NZ and to the Final in Melbourne. What a World Cup it was and a great year for cricket.

Some highlights nominated by the boys were · Beating LPW thanks to a Tom ‘T-Bag’ Broughton 7-21 and racing to Brickworks to see the Black Caps beat the Aussies with a Kane Williamson six. · Beating top of the table Riccarton with a clutch 6 hit by Geoff Bunn. · Bolting from Bradford Park to Andrew’s house to watch Guptill’s 237* against the Windies in the Quarter Final. · Every time Tom ‘T-Bone’ Broughton left early for work we would win tight games. · Beating Hornby by 3 runs defending 278 thanks to 96 (72) by Michael Nicolson · Michael Nicolson getting a 6 wicket bag in a . · We really enjoyed the hospitality and cucumber sandwiches at Merivale-Pap and it was cool to line up our bats to remember Phil Hughes. · Benny Magon’s 61* from 35 balls when Sarah was watching. Maybe the first time she has seen him score more than 0. · Matt Coxon filling in for us in bad state and catching a one handed screamer.

Our leading bowlers were Tom Broughton with 36 wickets at 12 and Michael Nicolson 27 wickets at 15. Our leading batsmen were Michael Nicolson 462, Zach Abbott 421 and Marty Crook 310 runs. Michael Nicolson was our player of the year.

We have lost Tom ‘Teabag’ Broughton our overseas import who has travelled home to England after a very successful 2 year contract with Suddenly Sydenham. We may have lost Zach Abbott and Marty Crook for a few seasons as they anticipate being overseas next season.

There seems to be a reshuffle at Sydenham in the morning grades so Suddenly Sydenham may take a very different form in the 2015/2016 season. Suddenly Sydenham started in 1999 with a core group of Cashmere High School students and has kept a loyal base of good blokes through the years after a merger with the Book L’s who were a younger bunch of Cashmere students. We have had 130 players play for us so far. The name Suddenly Sydenham was coined by a founding member Sebastian Parr circa 2003 and the origin of the name was based on a c-grade American sitcom ‘Suddenly Susan’ with Brooke Shields. #sydsontour2015

They year started well with a few new guys coming to the club which the Goats grabbed with both hands to help fill some of the numbers that had moved on over the last couple of seasons and there were high hopes of a successful year. Unfortunately for one reason or another we always still seemed to end up struggling to fill a side on Saturday with work commitments and injuries combining to be the main problem. Plenty of texts went out later in the week and thanks to everyone who helped out by filling in or bringing along a mate, their dad or their dog to make up the numbers. Special thanks to the junior section of the club who provided a number of primary school age players who helped us out over the Christmas period. While we didn't win any of these games they all got a taste of bowling against adult players and all performed very well.

This , along with some inconsistent performances meant we ended up with a losing record for the year. We struggled against the better teams, winning no games against the teams who made the top 6 and had mixed results against the bottom 8.

The highlight result of the season was beating Old Colls, who eventually won the bottom 8 section. Chasing 180, after 15 overs we were 5-34 but a great partnership by Simon and Pat got us close and we eventually won by 2 wickets in the last over.

Generally our bowling was sound with our 5 regular bowlers all picking up wickets without going for too many runs. We probably lacked a consistent strike bowler who could run through the better sides. Pat Clarke was consistently good, as well as having the best beard in the grade and having genuine spinner in Dilan Patel was a great addition. When he was available Alex Brailey performed well for us, as well as for 2nd grade.

Our batting and fielding were we struggled throughout the year. To many easy catches were dropped and we gifted games away that we could have won.Our batting was inconsistent at best. Most guys had some good innings but players often gave their wickets away with little thought to the state of the game. Jacob Harrington had a great first half of the season, including his first 50 for the club but dropped away after Christmas. Chris Ingram scored heavily when he could get past 0, he just got some nasty balls sometimes, and it was a shame work meant he could only play a little over half the games. Amos Taylor joined us from Southwest after Xmas and performed well with the bat and did a great job with the gloves while Dougie wasn't available.

While the results weren't there, it was an enjoyable year with a good team spirit and everyone contributing. Hopefully we will have all the regulars back next year for another season of Goats cricket.

Jon Bennett 5-12 3B TEAM REPORT – ALLSTARS

The Sydenham Allstars had a mixed 2014/2015 Season in the 3B Grade. It was a season that relied heavily on the unknowns, stepping up and saving the team on many occasions.

One of the foundation members, Marc Hobson, had a sublime season with both bat and gloves. He was the stalwart on many occasions, blitzing the opening bowlers all over the park. His powerful straight shots saw the Sydenham Allstars begin most innings very strongly, however this was not always supported by the middle and lower order. In the end of the season, Marc Hobson also delved in to the bowling line up with some positive results. His aggression and pace, proved troublesome to most batters. This talent looks promising for the 2015/2016 season.

John Hawes was as destructive as ever at the batting and bowling crease. His line and length caused trouble to most teams, and he was one of the leading wicket takers in the Sydenham Allstars. A true allrounder, John was lethal with the bat accumulating many boundaries and runs in the season.

The Sydenham Allstars lacked players in the second half of the season, and this caused teams to accumulate scores out of the Allstars’ reach. It was positive to see the players fielding and bowling the forty overs, however batting with 8 players, 7 wickets, was a bridge to far.

Next season, we are striving to have a full team list and showcase the talent we have.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT - CARDINALS

After a second place finish in the 2013-2014 season, the Presidents Cardinals season opened with ambitions of going one better. A few wobbly performances early on put that ambition under pressure from the start, and despite the occasional great team performances, it was to be individuals who provided the real highlights of the season.

Brendon Laughton’s 229* against a strong Old Colls at Elmwood Park was both ridiculous and sublime and justifiably got media coverage in practically every sensible nation that plays cricket. Kev Moore put together a string of impressive hundreds against some of the better opposition in the grade. Just to prove the baldies didn’t have a monopoly on big scores, Anthony Wild also knocked up a very rapid 154* on the return visit to Elmwood Park and threatened plenty more, if only the opposition had got a bigger total. That trio ended the season batting aggregate within 30 runs of each other, with Laughts taking the aggregate honours.

The laid back Craig Borcoski troubled the scorers with more than the spelling of his surname, threatening a ton more than once, and adding a five wicket bag early in the season. The irrepressible Matt Loose, battling injuries for much of the season threatened big totals too, delivering a high quality 78 off 62 balls in the last game of the season. Jeremy ‘Second Spell’ Brown got that wayward first spell under control and was always threatening with the ball, and as the season progressed became just as threatening with the willow. He also took the most catches, including a magnificent over the shoulder running effort that was easily the catch of the season. Dave Fleming always testing with the ball, topping the seasons bowling effort with 30 wickets after an ongoing head to head battle with the ageless Julien van Dyk. Brenden Winder captained the side, balancing individual opportunities against the need to play competitive cricket, delivering a streaky 4- 18 in the final game of the season. Kevin Congdon, more often seen on the sideline than on the field last season, showed he still had it, taking 3-16 in the same game. He has promised us more games next season. Fergus Smith showed his quality with a number of quick and economic spells, delivering when it counted most. Bert Walker was, well, Bert Walker – contributing with the bat, behind the stumps when necessary, and always with the jokes.

Jase Miller played the most expensive game of the season, paying a sub to turn out once – but with just as much passion as always, and Phil Barclay’s kit ended the season looking almost as new as it did at the start. Jeff Millar and Tim Murdoch should be fully rehabbed now and ready to rumble along soon.

The Pressies Cardinals built on the solid core of good players and good blokes from the previous season and welcomed new players into the mix in Warren Guy, Joey Rogers, Chris van Rensberg and Phil Walker. All contributed with both bat and ball and added much to the positive way that the Cardinals play cricket. As was mentioned several times at the team dinner, it’s the team and the people in it, and the way we play our cricket that players draw the most enjoyment from. The banter only adds magnificently to it.

The team highlight of the season was posting 90-odd against Burnside West on an appalling Somerfield Park pitch with weeds spaced irregularly giving it a seasick wallpaper texture. While the batting total was not a highlight, the bowling and fielding effort that very nearly brought victory certainly was. A magnificent six maidens on the trot from Ken Julian (amongst other excellent performances) at one end and the troubling left arm magician Jules van Dyk at the other set a tone from the start. Warren Guy took four cheap wickets in the middle order to put their tail enders under pressure. The rest of the side fielded unbelievably, making Burnside scrap for every single run. It went down to the wire before we ran out of runs – even five more might have done it.

The season could be described as one of two parts, with the Christmas / Near Year break providing somewhat of a turning point for the team. Up until then, player numbers had been variable. Two games were defaulted because of a lack of numbers and another two were played with a reduced side.

The final game before Christmas was arguably the low point of the season, with a team of nine cobbled together, including a willing first timer. A defeat to East-Shirley Blue by 280 runs was the end result.

A fresh recruitment drive through the hospital over the summer break yielded a positive outcome and up to six new players were brought in to the squad. The playing line-up became much more consistent as did the on-field performances, which gradually improved over the ensuing weeks.

Despite this, the team were unfortunately unable to register any victories, although there were a number of games that went down to the final few overs. The game against Old Boys Collegians was one in particular, where they chased down 233 with three balls to spare and nine wickets down.

The prevailing themes throughout the season were of participation and enjoyment, and although this became slightly strained at times in the early to middle stages, the injection of new players helped to renew enthusiasm and confidence.

Rex Venning, one of the mid-season recruits, proved to be an extremely handy acquisition and ended up topping the run scoring table. He also took home the award for best all- rounder for his efforts keeping wicket. Bernard Fanning had the highest individual batting score of 91 not out.

Chris Warren and Gareth Thomas, another of the mid-season recruits, shared the most wickets with 14 each. The best individual bowling figures of 8 overs, 3 maidens, 5 wickets for 10 runs* are worth a mention and went to Tom Vedder, a useful leg-spinner who came in for a couple of the final games. *not included in official stats as <3 games

Although a poor season in terms of results, there is every reason to be optimistic looking towards next season.

We would very much like to thank the club for their ongoing support.

WOMEN’S DIV 1 TEAM REPORT

Sydenham is proud of the quality and depth of our youth girl’s cricketers. Div one is benefitting with many skilled cricket girls now following on via the junior club again this coming season.

This season Div one girl’s grade was setup as a development grade 9 a side format playing 30 overs retiring batsman at 50 runs and bowler on 5 wickets starting at 1 pm. Also play a T20 round in which the girls produced some of their best cricket for this season in finishing third just missing out on a finial play off in a close match up.

It was excellent to see our div one and woman’s prem teams both playing in home matches on Sydenham Park. This was a first for the current crop of players and a most enjoyable day for Sydenham cricket was topped off with our prems defending #1 pitch in taking a win over OBC.

Team in 2014/15 Captains: Jamie Lyth and Olive Topping

Ellie Lovett, Jodie Dean, Caitlyn Robertson, Lucy Lyth, Nicole Hurd, Danielle Dunlop, Jenna Waghorn Thanks to Alana Topping from yr 7/8 morning grade who became our 12th girl regularly play two games on Saturdays .

The club thanks Jenna Waghorn the on call 12th girl for the prem team playing a lot of her cricket between our two teams this season. Putting the club needs ahead of her own Jenna was rewarded with a of 12 also worth a note Jenna was retired on 50 runs of just 32 balls nearly getting the girls home chasing a 200 plus score in a 30 over match. Note Jodie and Caitlyn retiring also on 50 an excellent effort of batting with the team scoring at better than a run a ball.

The girls are looking forward to the 2015 /16 season which I’m sure will open up new opportunities to lift the standards to a new level.

SOUTH WEST YOUTH CRICKET REPORT

SWYC started 2015 cricket season with a few changers to what we had last year. Most of our 1st X1 had left school at end of 2014, so this was going to make it difficult to retain a team in the 1st X1 grade for 2015 and consequently we decided not to enter a team in the 1st X1 grade. Three of SW last year's first X1 players who are still at school joined up with the North West club to bolster the ranks of the NW 1st X1 as they were also struggling withnumbers. This move by the three lads to NW was hard for the SW club but was totally supported by the club, in fact one of the players who went over to NW Alex Heenan has done really well in being top run scorer for the NW first’s. Alex has been recognised for his great first half cricket season in 2015, as he has been selected to travel to Malaysia and Shri Lanka with the Willows cricket club in these school holidays, so Congratulations to Alex for this great opportunity.

So the way SWYC club stacked up at the start of the season was three and half teams: we entered a year 9, year 10 and a 2nd X1 team in the competition, unfortunately we only had six afternoon youth open grade players available so these players filled in for the 2nd’s when required. Half way through the season North West Cricket approached us advising that they also are struggling to put a youth open team on the field so we combined the two teams, calling it the North/South club youth open team.

South west year 9b and 10A team went really well with both at the top of their respective sections. Our 2nd X1 team captained by Brad (a last year 1st X1 player) is also top of the section having only lost one match at the start of the season. Special thanks goes out to Gary Nightingale who is coaching and running the team on Saturday’s with John Hydes. Chris Harris has been helping with coaching when he can but his cricket world cup duties have prevented him from helping out more often.

Special thanks goes out to the Sydenham cricket club for use of the grass nets for our Wednesday and Thursday trainings. Thanks also to the Halswell Cricket club and Cashmere High School for providing cricket grounds for our Saturday matches. We are hoping the success of the cricket world cup will bring back more Youth grade cricket players to the sport and especially to SW cricket come start of cricket season again in Oct 2015.

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

Our junior teams performed extremely well in the 2013/14 season with our Year 7 Premier boys team finishing in 1st place. A remarkable result for our club, the team consisted of some very talented young men, whose dedication and commitment certainly paid off. Thanks to Rod Hooper and Greg Manson, along with Emma Scarf who worked endless hours correcting technique and assisting these boys to achieve personal goals and targets.

Many of our clubs teams won shields and our young ladies teams achieved exception results, everyone’s efforts were recognised by the many players that achieved placements in Canterbury Squads.

The coaches of all of our teams are all volunteers and we are so fortunate to be in a community where people give their time so freely to assist our club. We had many parents/care givers who provided umpiring, scoring and management of teams and we are so very grateful for their continual support.

Hardball Clinics run by Emma Scarf and her dedicated professional coaches, were well received and due to funding we were able to offer these free of charge to all hardball players. The clinics showed a remarkable difference in player’s technique and confidence on the field. We look to continue these for the 2015/16 season.

The junior committee was dedicated in providing a quality club that continued to be at the forefront of cricket. We were grateful to our specialist team of individuals who give endless hours for the continuation of our club.

The club was supported immensely by the Senior Club and SPC, and we are grateful for the quality of the resources, guidance and support we received.
