LIFE MEMBERS (Women) Mesdames R Martin, T McDonald, P Quickenden, P Carrick PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure to present the 120th Annual report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club. Our season from a playing perspective was mixed. It was heartening to see our Prem women become a competitive unit and developing a winning culture. We were fortunate to have the services of two Scottish Internationals Ollie Rae and Sam Haggo, and whilst there is no certainty they will return we are working hard on player recruitment to ensure our young team has the benefit of age and experience as they grow as a team. My special thanks to Andrew MacKenzie for the stirling work he put in managing our Girls, and I am confident that we will go from strength to strength in the seasons to come. Our morning mens grades- Prems, 2A and 2 B enjoyed mixed success. It would be fair to say we struggled at times to get full teams on the field. The World Cup didn’t help us, with players away to watch those games, and I and the committee felt for Glen Hooper, as he battled every week to get 11 players on the park in Prems and 2a. During the winter we have been working very hard on our playing numbers and recruiting quality players to bolster our ranks. As this report goes to press, I know we have two new players recruited for Prems and also Kelvin Scott a very accomplished ex Prem Player who will Captain and manage the 2a side. Chris Harris will Captain the Prem side and continue as head coach, and this year the Prems will be managed by Mike Dolden. Doldy played many many years for our Prems, and in his earlier years he played as a semi professional in the UK. He has a strong coaching Pedigree having coached Syds to a one day title when Greg O’Reilly was our Captain and prior to that coached Woolston for a couple of years when they first entered the Prem competition. This year also, Geordie Dann has agreed to manage the 2a and 2b sides with a particular emphasis on linking with our school leavers coming into the club, and also ensuring the sides are organised with structured training nights and individual skills based coaching. Glen Hooper is back involved in Hagley Oval playing day management, and has some Hawke Cup coaching duties, and we wish him well with that. Hopefully we will still see him around the club as his son Angus will be playing in the morning squad. I would also like to make mention again about our afternoon sides. Whilst it is important for our top teams to perform it is equally important that our afternoon grades enjoy being part of our club and perform well. These teams are the back bone of our club, and as President I wish to formally acknowledge their involvement from 3rd grade to Presidents, and trust that you can come back and enjoy your cricket for many seasons to come. I know the Hospital team has struggled for numbers but I earnestly hope that we can retain this team not just for our club but for the history of that teams involvement in club cricket over many many years. Our facilities continue to be a focus for your committee. Whilst our astro all weather practice facility is standing up well, we acknowledge that our grass practice facility is adequate but not meeting our growing needs. We still have advice on file from Council that our park is to receive a major upgrade to surface and drainage, but council still will not commit to a date for this. Planning going forward thus remains difficult and uncertain. I am pleased to report that Tom O’carroll our groundsman has reported that he will be back this season and we know he prepares our playing blocks well. You will see from our annual accounts that funding the expenses of our club is a struggle. We continue to approach corporates to secure funding but in these difficult times this is a big ask. At this time I can report that your committee is in ongoing discussions with a major sponsor for our Prem womens team…..watch this space! In saying that, we also continue to review all areas of our expense line, but also ensure that all members enjoy the best gear, grounds and facilities we are able to provide. Our sincere thanks must go to all of our sponsors and funders who continue to support us. Air Rescue Services Ltd NZ Community Trust Pub Charities Southern Community Trust CMCA Coaching Grants Cricket Express. Without the support of these trusts and Organisations, we simply would not have a cricket Club. Finally my special thanks and appreciation to all of our committee who work willingly and tirelessly to ensure your cub is well managed and continues to grow.We are all committed to ensure our club can continue to be the cricket club of choice now and in the future. Graham Harris President MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT Another season has come to an end with great turnout at prize giving on the last night of the season. Good to see most of the teams there. It was a close fought battle for many of the trophies with many only being decided on the last day of the season. Well done to all the winners.Team results were mixed with the 3C Cardinals coming close to winning the grade but losing the final on the last day of the season. This year saw two new sides and a large numbers of new players throughout the grades helping to build up the strength and stability to sides. They certainly enjoyed their time with the club this season and look forward to having them back next season. Again this season we had very loyal teams to the club, a large majority having been with the club for years. And we as a committee thank them for all their efforts and support over the season in helping to keep the club in fine shape. Over the season many of the women and youth players had the opportunity to play in the senior section of the club when they didn’t have games in the competition. This certainly gave these players more experience to play in other teams in the club. Good to see everyone keen and enjoying their cricket. The continued development of our women's section leaves the club in good shape for next season. The Premier Women made a huge impression this year winning a few games and coming close in others. The Scottish girls Ollie and Sam having a big impact on the side, both on and off the field, and providing top level coaching for the women. A big thanks must also go to Andrew McKenzie and Emma Scarf for their efforts with the women's section. On the social scene, as already mentioned, the prize giving had a great turnout with over 100 people there on the night. Unfortunately the quiz nite late in the season didn’t have as many teams as in the past but was still a good nite and ended in a close result - thanks Bert for your efforts. As a club we need to look at ways to create a more active social scene within the club. Thanks again to the bowling club for their support and use of the clubrooms. Certainly a great place to go back to after a game for a drink, TV (sky) and bowls. Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on the club website and on Facebook. Andrew Chisnall Club Captain OBITUARIES It is with great sadness the club and our wider cricket community acknowledge the passing away of Mike Shrimpton on 13th June 2015 at the age of 74. Michael John Froud Shrimpton was born in Fielding on June 23 1940 and was raised in rural Manawatu. As a bright student and talented sportsman, the rural lifestyle agreed with Mike and no doubt had much to do with shaping him into a person of good character with sound values. As a young man Mike loved his cricket and rugby and after moving to Hawkes Bay struck up a great friendship with another Bay sporting icon, Blair Furlong, for whom Mike would fondly recant stories of their shenanigans on and off the sports field.
