PRESIDENTS REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the 124th Annual Report to the members of the Sydenham Cricket Club.

It is significant to note that next year is our 125th Year in existence, and this time next year, planning will be well underway for our 125 year celebrations. More on that event later, but suffice to say, we intend to celebrate that momentous occasion in style.

Looking back on our year I think we can feel satisfied with the season. I know our Afternoon grade teams acquitted themselves well, and in particularly our 6th Grade Cardinals who won their grade and Jon Bennett’s Goats who won the round robin section in Div Four.

We are seeing player growth in our Women’s section, and it is particularly pleasing to see both growth in player numbers and team performances in our Youth Section. We fully expect to field two more additional teams when their competition resumes in October.

Our Morning Grade cricketers achieved mixed results, and with the reality of promotion/relegation in these grades, the pressure is on to remain competitive and avoid relegation. Regrettably it appears our Division one side did not score enough points to be promoted into the Championship grade, and this is clearly an issue for our club as it does not provide an ideal pathway for our talented youth players who aspire to Premier Cricket, nor does it give us an ability to entice new promising players into our club.

So with all of this apparent to us, much work has gone on during the Winter to ensure we are best placed to be competitive in our two top teams. To that extent I am delighted to advise the Mathew Bell (ex Black Cap, and current NZC contracted coach) has been appointed head coach of the Men’s Premier Squad.

Chris Harris has advised the committee that he wishes to step back from front line duties and probably just play white ball cricket. We owe Harry a huge debt of gratitude as a player, a coach and a cricket ambassador for our club, and still he wants to keep playing at 50 years of age! However with Harry wanting to step back, I am delighted to announce that Tim Johnstone has been appointed Captain of the Premier team in all three playing formats. Toby Mowatt from the Northern Lancashire Leagues will be joining us as a specialist opening batter and there could well be another signing or two as we shore up the playing strength and numbers in our top two men's teams. Bill Nicholson has taken on the role of Convenor of Selectors he will be ably assisted by Kevin Congdon with input from TJ and Matt Bell.

The Premier Women have been busy in the off season also. Under the very capable stewardship of Linda Pettigrew they have been involved in winter coaching programmes with specialist coaches such as Amy Satherwaite and Nicky Turner and , and I am assured we will be a very competitive group this upcoming season.

The challenges of growing a sustainable cricket club remain, and the biggest hurdle is funding. I can assure our members that your committee is working very hard at ways in which we create multiple income streams into our club. I hope to make further announcements on this as we move into the season.

Further, the committee is very conscious of the need to balance our subscription revenue against fees charged by other clubs, but whilst ensuring that the subscription income does make a meaningful contribution to our income line.

We are also deeply indebted and appreciative of the support we receive from our community funding agencies and we work very hard to demonstrate to them that their contributions are vital in our desire to grow our player base and the quality of our facilities.

Our sincere thanks to Southern community Trust Pub Charity Air Rescue Community Trust Rata Foundation We also wish to acknowledge the financial support we receive from Metro Cricket Sport Canterbury - and also our other funding supporters The Birdwood café and Pizzeria Harris Family trust Banfields Butchery Swanndri The Experience Group Kiwi Rail International Antarctic Centre Koha Fitness Basic Bikes St Martins New World.

Finally and again, I must give thanks to my committee. To all of you I offer my heartfelt thanks for the work you do to make this club the successful club that it is. I can assure all of our members that having a stable and committed management team is a huge plus in embracing the many challenges we face. I am particularly pleased that our current committee offer themselves for re- election and that is a further endorsement of the faith your committee have in our journey ahead to grow our club in players and facilities. Do not let this dissuade any one of you in putting your name forward to join us at the committee table. We have much to do and you would be very welcome!

Finally on behalf of your committee, it is my pleasure to present to you the 124th Annual Report and Financial statement for your consideration.

Graham Harris President

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

It was a pleasing end to the season for the club with several outstanding team and individual efforts on the final day.

The Div 6 Cardinals won their final on Sydenham Park to go along with their first placing in the round robin competition. The Div 4 Goats wrapped up their season with a third placing in the finals after winning the round robin competition. The Prem Women won there playoff match to finish 3rd in the one day competition. Well done to all the other teams for their efforts over the season. Special mention to the Div 8 Tamil team who in only their second season of playing club cricket (and this year playing 40 over comp) showed they have the ability to play at this level with some good wins thru the season.

Individual highlights on the last day included Chad and Ryan for the Prem Men both getting unbeaten centuries and Chidambaram Palaniappan for the Tamils getting the clubs best figures for the season with 7 for 9. The last day of the season saw five more trophies for and bowling for individual efforts. Always an interesting time of the year when sorting trophies with these last minute achievements. And a good turnout at the prize giving with all sides being represented even with the winter sports code under way.

It was good to be back on Sydenham Park this season and I think everyone certainly enjoyed that opportunity to play again on the park. And this showed at the bar with good turnouts after the games. Social events were reasonably well supported thru out the season. Everything from Bert's quiz nights thru to the end of season golf day which provides some exciting moments throughout the day. Would be great if we can get more members to these events in the coming season.

This year the senior club increased in size to 17 teams with the youth teams now under the club banner. Exciting times ahead with the youth talent coming thru both in the men's and women's ranks. Like other years it was great to see these youth players putting there hands up to play in mens/womens teams when they had no youth cricket and being embraced by the club teams.

A big thanks to all the captains for their hard work over the season supporting the club, from getting teams on the field, supporting social events, and to ensuring club stats were kept up to date. A special thanks to Maria Lankeshwar for all her hard work with the women's section. She has finished coaching with the senior club this last season to concentrate her efforts in the junior club.

Also thanks to the committee and helpers for all their hard work over the season. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep the club up and running especially with the size of our club.

Remember to stay up to date with the club scene on the club website and Facebook.

Have a great winter and look forward to seeing you all back next season.

Andrew Chisnall Club Captain OBITUARIES

Barry Ellis passed away late last season. He was apparently a (little) opening batsman and a (big!) character for the club from 1964 to 1971 (Played senior grade from 1964 to 1970). His club stats show he played (in senior grade) 80 innings, 4 not outs, scored 1244 runs at average of 16.36 with highest score of 77. Also 31 catches.

Mark Banfield died over the winter months. He was a great supporter of the club providing both raffle and quiz prizes through the Banfields of Beckenham butchery.

The club also records the passing of Russell Dann's wife Margaret.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

PREMIER MEN TEAM REPORT

At the Christmas break the Prem men would have felt pleased with their efforts to date having narrowly missed making the 1-Day semis, and sitting comfortably in 2nd place in the 2-Dayers. That good form initially carried through into January when the side again performed very well in the T20 competition, managing to get through to the semi-finals only to miss out on the final when they were well beaten by . The stand-out in that T20 run was TJ Johnston who relished the opening role and clubbed 245 runs to sit 2nd in the competition’s aggregates.

Attention then turned to the balance of the 2-Day competition but unfortunately from that point our game fell apart for much of February and March. In those next four matches we never managed to score above 160 in any innings against sides who had players better equipped to bat time which we struggled to do ourselves. Chris Harris was the exception to that with Harry instrumental in many desperate rearguard actions to save matches, but we failed to achieve in the first three, and then weren’t well placed in the Marist rained out match next. The batting problem was compounded by an inexplicable drop in the standard of our fielding which saw one of the better fielding sides before Christmas suddenly become one of the worse. It was hard to gauge the bowlers’ performances in that environment where missed chances gave the batsmen opportunities that they later exploited – an obvious big work on for next season.

The only ray of sunshine in the 2-Days after Christmas was the last match against BWU. We were well and truly out of contention in that match after the first day, but then through the sterling efforts of Harry, Chad Bowes and Ryan Wallace, managed to save the match with Chad (113*) and Ryan (118*) both finishing with unbeaten centuries. A memorable match and a Sydenham batting effort rarely seen in recent years.

Chris Harris was the stand-out performer of the side without whom some matches certainly wouldn’t have been won (his six off the last ball to beat OBC at Sydenham was memorable) and the bad days would have been far worse – his average of 43 with 10 not outs evidence of the inability of others to stay with him. Taylor Irie stood out as one of the few who could bat time, and was the pick of the out-fielders with seven run-outs. Ryan Wallace had a disappointing run by his standards after Christmas until that last match yet still finished the season with 500 runs. Mitch Gardner was again the top performer with the ball with his 37 wickets at 17.8, but in many ways it was the slower bowlers that impressed. TJ’s first season for Sydenham with 30 wickets, backed by the accurate leg-spin of Connor Marshall and Jamie Hunt, the latter who shone in the short form games, finally gave us a balance to our attack that had been very much medium pace focused in recent years. Others had their moments but struggled for consistency, particularly the batting.

So although our white ball efforts over the season were very competitive, the 2- Dayers showed that we have plenty of work to do on this next season. To be fair, injuries to the likes of Lane Tutty, Carl Hooper and Hayden Day, work transfers, and other unavailability’s saw the side use an unacceptably high twenty four players over the season, something that is unlikely to be repeated. The basis of a good side remains but to have a chance to win a title next season it will require some real hard work on the fielding, and some strategies to obtain better starts (an average opening partnership of nine runs lasting only four overs will not win 2-day matches). PREMIER WOMEN TEAM REPORT – STARS

The Birdwood Premier Women team finished the season with a second place in the Kirsty Bond series and third placings in both the T20 and one day competitions. The second placing is the highest placing in a competition for the team since premier women’s cricket returned to the club. This improvement shows the core players in the team are developing into a competitive unit.

This improvement is also visible in the individual player stats. This season Jenna Waghorn achieved the top honours with the highest MVP for Sydenham, competing against all players within our club. She also received the Christchurch Metro Cricket award for most wickets by a premier women player and came a close second for the MVP award for Metro premier women.

Two of our younger players played their debut game for the Metro premier women’s team post Christmas. Amelia Tainui was welcomed for a difficult game against Lancaster Park and Darcy Prasad joined for the last game of the season to win the third v fourth playoff. We look forward to seeing these players continue to grow through the lower grades.

We were lucky to have the Royal New Zealand Air Force cricket tour come to Christchurch in February. With the Christchurch cricketing community so small it was a refreshing change to play against unknown opposition and we were delighted to have this opportunity. We played two games against the team, each side picking up one win. These games were played in great spirit and we were impressed by the athleticism and professionalism of the RNZAF side. We hope to arrange a similar tour during the 2019/20 season.

Now the season has ended Erika Oda, from Japan, and Sarah Betterton, from the UK have returned home. These are two players who brought valuable skills and energy to the team. We hope to see both players return for next season.

Maria Fahey and Andrew McKenzie have devoted many hours to coaching and supporting our team. The effort involved in developing players and putting together teams each week is substantial and Andrew and Maria have gone over and above to ensure we are putting the best players on the park each week while continuing to develop individual players. We appreciate their hard work.

We are also grateful to The Birdwood for their ongoing support of women’s cricket at Sydenham.

DIV 1 TEAM REPORT

Hopes were high at the start of the season that the Seconds would earn promotion to the Championship grade. A strong side took the field for the first round of one dayers but didn’t perform to its potential, and when several injuries, a defection, and players moving to Prems the side struggled to find consistency. Nevertheless it still finished a close second in the competition and with the side it put on the paddock in the final we should have won. The T20 leg of the competition was a disappointment despite a good start against LPW. Finishing fourth (out of six) proved in the end to be the difference between promotion and staying in Div 1 the following year. There was a heavy reliance on ring-ins, youth players and bringing players up from the thirds as player availability over the holiday period became an issue. Sydenham only needed to win one more to gain promotion ahead of OBC.

Things improved slightly in the two day competition with the side sneaking into second, a few points behind LPW. Two games in particular had disappointing outcomes on their respective second days despite Sydenham being in a strong position in each game. In the LPW game a poor fielding performance ( not helped by some ‘unfortunate’ decisions by the opposition umpires) cost us the game, despite a magnificent century in the first innings by Carl Hooper. In the game against OBC Sydenham declared four down two runs ahead on the first innings, giving both teams a chance for an outright. However OBC batted the rest of the day to protect its promotion chances.

Despite these disappointments a lot of positives came out of the season. Charlie Finnie took his opportunities with both bat and ball and was one of the best all- rounders in the grade. Carl Hooper was our best bowler before his promotion to Premiers and then when unable to bowl in Prems due to injury showed how well he can bat. Sahan Perera and Peter Southey Jensen both showed tremendous improvement which provided much needed solidarity to the batting line up. Preetham Pagadala, who came up from our youth section made a very good impression as a bowler and has a bright future Gurav Dudeja also contributed well with the ball and showed glimpses of form with the bat. Pankaj Bhagat and Rod Hooper were both affected by injuries in the second part of the season so we probably didn’t see the best of them. Michael Nicolson lead the team well and had a good all round performance, particularly with the ball. . Daniel Thomson was a welcome addition to the T20 batting line up, and Matt Day had some solid performances despite having to fill in as ‘keeper.

Three new players joined us towards the end of the season: Zac Scott-Howman, Conner Williams, and Finn O’Donnell and each of these made a solid contribution and added to the strength of the team. The future looks good with some school leavers starting to emerge as promising prospects.

DIV 1 TEAM REPORT – SUDDENLY SYDENHAM

The 2018/19 season for Suddenly Sydenham was one of the toughest seasons for me as a captain and one for the team. We had got moved up into Division One to help with the numbers of the grade and join the 2nds. We knew it would be a tough season, but we were all looking forward to proving ourselves. We looked like we had numbers for the season, and we could challenge pretty much every team in the grade.

Then injuries took their toll as well as people from 2nds and above leaving the club took the strain on us and then we struggled to field a team most weeks. At the end of 2018, we got some youth into the squad and they proved themselves straight away and we were all very impressed in how they conducted themselves on the field. With Josh and Kieran Charlton making a massive impact as well as Will Andrews, who we cannot wait to join the team.

I think as a team, we have learnt quite a bit about ourselves as a team and as individuals and hopefully we can apply them into the coming season. We have made quite a few signings to our team, which I am hoping will help add to our team and hopefully we can be even more competitive on the field this season and look to win the title.

DIV 4 GRADE TEAM REPORT - GOATS

What a difference a year makes. After finishing second to last, last season the goats finally broke through to win the grade this year. With virtually the same team as last year this was a bit of a surprise but showed the potential we’ve always had but often not delivered.

Our grade was one of the most even in memory, with every team beating each other on a regular basis. After a first half of the season where we went 4 wins and 5 losses we then won 8 in a row to clinch the regular season with a couple of rounds to spare. Six of the other eight sides finished within two wins of each other which shows the closeness of the competition.

The strength of our side was it’s bowling attack, which never got hit around all season and was the most varied in the grade. Of our five main bowlers none had an RPO of more than 3.5 and all got the wickets at an average of less than 15. Chris Douglas led the attack with an outstanding 35 wickets with an RPO of 2.3 and would’ve had more except for a late season injury. Oliver Philpott also had a great year getting 28 wickets including 2 6 bags with his leg spin. Having a good spinner makes a huge difference when you are playing down the grades.

Our batting was not quite to the same strength as our bowling but still generally got us through. Some scratchy pitches certainly didn’t help the batsmen all year. Oliver Philpott and Andrew Douglas were the main contributors through the season, batting at three and four respectively, but others chipped and with good innings at vital times. The return of the special guest opener after Christmas let some of the bowlers have a go opening, often with good results.

Our fielding was a strength this year, lead by some great keeping from Andrew Douglas and expert slip fielding from Tony Dannenberg , who caught some outstanding catches in an area that had let us down in the past. In the outfield the speed and catching ability of Chris, Alex and Satpreet also saved many runs.

A great team spirit again this year, helped by a winning run. We enjoyed each other’s company on the field as well as having a beer afterwards. Great turnouts to the end of year dinner and the Metro Cricket prize giving and everyone is keen to be back next season.

Congratulations to Ollie for winning the all-rounders trophy again this year and to Tony for winning the fielding trophy and thanks to everyone who filled in when we were short.

Looking back on the season just gone, thoughts were how on earth will I write a season report on it. So I thought the best option was to just put in the report from the final which was written by James Macbeth Dann. Enjoy folks.

Sydenham Cardinals vs New Brighton, Division 6 Final, March 30th 2019

The Cardinals were rewarded for an excellent 2018/2019 season, but were made to work for it by New Brighton at Sydenham Park. This was the fourth meeting between the two teams this season, with Sydenham winning twice out east, and New Brighton upsetting the odds with a remarkable last wicket stand at Centennial Park. Tensions were high. The ground itself was notable for the lush outfield, the result of extravagant grass growth due to liberal use of fertiliser. As Sydenham’s two openers quickly found out, there was much value for a good stroke, especially along the ground. Geordie departed in the second over for just 1, while Coops took to the New Brighton attack with a couple of lusty blows over the rope. However, when he was caught slashing at a slower ball, the Cardinals were under the pump at 19/2. This was a situation tailor-made for Kez and Camo, who love nothing more than grinding their way out of a tough situation. They knuckled down, with their first priority being protecting their wickets. As they became more comfortable, the runs started to flow. Camo punched a couple of straight boundaries, with a technique that was best summed up by Jimmy as “technical as shit”. They carried the innings through till a well-deserved drink.

They had seen off most of Brighton’s bowling attack, and were able to get after some of the looser bowlers. Camo departed for 40, just in time for his family to turn up and watch him bat. Kez got through to around 27, and the next few batsmen all built on the platform that had been constructed. Larts dispatched three sixes, while Bruce and Smitty also made quick, handy contributions. Hemi was just getting into his work, slapping a boundary, when he pulled a hamstring making a quick single. Pez was bowled off the final ball of the innings, but had hit the ball before to the fence, meaning the Cardinals finished on a very handy 182.

While his early departure was probably bad for the total, it meant that Coops could man the bbq. He returned with his trademark pork belly, the undoubted MVP of the Cardinal’s Cuisine Awards. There were also some sausages, and Geordie’s meatballs were a quick energy burst for the drinks break when the team were in the field, but everyone was so focussed on bringing home the trophy that food was largely a secondary concern.

Hemi’s injury meant a sub fielder was required. Col had come down to support the team, so put on a Cardinals top and fielded in the slips in jeans until Shanks could get home and get into his kit. By the time Shanks had got back to the ground, New Brighton were already two down, with Coops taking two wickets in a maiden first over. It was an impressive effort from the Cardinals with the ball; Pez ably supported Coops from the other end, bowling his 8 overs straight through. Kez came on from the Brougham St end, and almost immediately facilitated a run out, with the batsman making the mistake of taking on Coop’s arm for a second run, and being well short. The game looked to be swinging to the Cardinals, and then with the last over before drinks, Larts managed to snap up two more wickets, including the last recognised batsman. After a brilliant pep talk from Shanks, the Cardinals came out after drinks resolved to see the job done. There was initial frustration, as Larts kept putting the ball in a good channel, but the batsmen couldn’t get his blade close enough to nick it. At the other end, Jimmy was having trouble recalibrating his radar from a line down leg stump. He was replaced by Smitty, who made short work of the last two wickets, and the Cardinals were crowned Champions.

After clapping Kez off the field, for his performance not just in this game, but across the whole season, the team made their way to the clubrooms, where a few Warriors tragics watched the second half of their mauling by Manly. Following that was the club prize giving, with awards for James Stokes, Larts, and quite a few for Kez. Once the formal proceedings were wrapped up, Kez headed to the upstairs mezzanine where he impotently squirted a bottle of bubbles over the team below. From there, it was strawpedos, Armadillos, and infamy.

DIV 6 TEAM REPORT - ALLSTARS

The Sydenham Allstars returned for another season, with the majority of the 2017-18 players returning. With the help of Sydenham Cricket, we were able to recruit more players and we could confidently field eleven players each week. The team welcomed Nitish Gautam, Abhi Kumar and Milin Paul to the team. We also had Ben Potter playing a number of games for the team.

The season was an improvement on the 2017-18 season, with the highlight of four victories and more importantly a victory over eventual Champions for the grade, Sydenham Cardinals. The team was not short of run scorers or wicket takers, yet victories eluded us. We had many players contribute throughout the season, however collectively these contributions only occurred a few times, leading to victories. If we can collectively and consistently deliver each week, more victories will come.

Some key highlights for the season;

 Christopher Reeve and Paul Jensen fulfilled their long-time promise of an opening hundred run partnership. Christopher scored 59 and Paul 54. These were the only half centuries for the team, and it led to a great victory for the final game of the season.  Christopher Reeve provided solid batting in the top order with four scores over 35 and a healthy average of 25. Christopher blunted the toughest of bowling attacks with strong defence and smart shot selection. Christopher also picked up a wicket with his bowling and 7 catches for the season. Christopher was our MVP for the season.  Gourav Saini was a double threat with his batting and bowling. He is the strongest all-rounder in the team and this saw him accumulate 208 runs at an average of 23.1 and capture 19 wickets at 14.5.  The wickets were spread across the four main bowlers for the Allstars; Gourav 19, Abraham 19, Mark 18 and Jordan 15. The line and length of these bowlers were more consistent this season leading to runs being hard to come by.  Satvik Saini and Cameron Hatcher did not play as many games as in previous seasons, however their impact was felt immediately. Satvik captured 8 wickets in his 21 overs for the season. Cameron captured 10 wickets in his games with the only 5 wicket haul for the team.  Paul Jensen recaptured the place as the team's dominant spinner. His 5 wickets was 1 better than last year’s best spinner, Ben Potter.  Mark Flowerday top scored against Parklands in one game with a brilliantly struck 31. This was the second week that Mark showed our top order batsman, how to dismantle the bowling attack. Well done Mark.  The wicket keepers, Milin Paul, Christopher Reeve and Paul Jensen, captured 22 catches for the season.  There was much to be celebrated in the season, and the collegiality and camaraderie will ensure that the players return for future seasons.

Kind regards, Abraham Atherton and Cameron Hatcher

DIV 8 TEAM REPORT - TAMILXI

This is our second season with the club and the first in the 40th over format. With all the learning's from the previous season we came back strong this season adding many wins to our name. We enjoyed the season as a team and were happy to be quite competitive. We can proudly say we have come a long way from where we started.

Though we finished in the lower half of the group we did manage to beat almost all teams in the group at least once sparing a couple of teams. The energy in the team was consistently high throughout the season. Every player had a significant contribution throughout the season and was responsible for a victory in at least one match. We had a few players leave us mid-season due to them getting jobs in other cities but were fortunate to find replacements.

David was the most consistent batsman this season too and an amazing fielder taking many difficult catches. Won us many games and a great bowler too. He won the team player of the year award. Selva was a very reliable one down batsman who added a lot of support to the top order. Had a significant contribution in our very first win of the season against Merivale Papanui which gave us a lot of confidence for the season. Mukesh was one of the best all rounders who also filled in keeping the wickets in Ravi’s absence. Had key contributions with the bat and the ball in many matches. Made 75 in the match against Lancaster park and took the total to 178 from nowhere. Ravi injured his finger during one of the matches mid-season and had to undergo a surgery and missed the rest of the season. Hope he gets fit before the next season. John was a key member of the team who helped in organising at various stages during the season. He was instrumental in the win against the Riccarton Telegu thunders with a blitzkrieg innings towards the end. Monty was the opener which the team badly wanted. He was the all in all of the team. Gave a lot of support with the field placing, umpiring, befriending opponent teams. Very useful spinner too.

Kumar was a key opening bowler who tore into the opponent’s top order in many matches. Very consistent to practices and got key runs towards the end in many matches which got us to decent totals. Along with him Hareesh was another key opening bowler taking the top order(main) wickets in many games which eventually resulted in victory for the team. Hareesh also helped in various activities of the team. Karan was an amazing allrounder who helped the team in all aspects of the game. He never got out without scoring at least 40 runs in every game he played. Great fielder and an amazing bowler. Came as a fill in and became a mainstream player. Aman was the Shoaib Akhtar of the team. Added a lot of strength to the bowling unit. Opponents could rarely hit above 15 runs in his 8 overs. Took 5 wickets against Richmond Rhinos and helped us comprehensively win over them. Gowtham was the most committed player. Was in for most practices and was instrumental in the win against Heathcote SOC’s with his 4 wicket haul. Narayanan was the wall who provided great resistance with the bat when we were struggling towards the start of the season. Pradeep took some astonishing catches whenever he played. Had to go to Auckland mid-season for his job. Raj gave a lot of confidence to the team whenever he played. Very good all rounder. But chose not to play many times. Samarth volunteered as an opening batsman when there was no opener available. Had a good stint at the field. I was happy to finish the season with 33 wickets and a 7 wicket haul in the final match against Lancaster Park. Thanks Navin, Raghu, Gopi, Dinesh, Lucky, Simi, Madhesh, Anil, Pratap, Anand, Amit for supporting whenever required.

After a much-improved season everyone’s confidence has increased, and everybody seem to be very motivated. We look forward to the next season and are confident we can do better and have another enjoyable season.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – CARDINALS

The Presidents Cardinals started the season, as they always do, hoping to revisit old glories and a target of making the top four competition at the end of the season.

As has been the trend of recent seasons, we delivered on the first with some standout individual performances and moments of sheer incredulity, but without the consistent team performances to challenge the grade’s top performers. Player availability was a challenge throughout the season, and all too often the team selected itself, sometimes with ring-ins required, detracting from the consistent performances needed to challenge for the top spots.

The season’s highlight was undoubtedly the instigation, by Hornby and Cardinals’ team member Anthony Wild, of the Brendon Laughton memorial trophy. Featuring Laughts’ iconic right red cricket boot mounted on a skateboard, the trophy symbolises Laughts’ early years in Hornby, and his later years playing for the Sydenham Presidents Cardinals, where he delivered camaraderie and humour, some devastating performances with the bat – including an unforgettable 229 – some outstanding moments in the field, and some frankly jammy efforts with the ball.

The trophy will be played for whenever the two sides meet, and the first game for it resulted in a season highlight when Matt Loose, in the middle of a stellar season averaging in the 60s posted a stupendous 179 not out – the ball departing Sydenham 2 for the far side of Brougham Street several times during his innings. Matt raced to fifty in 55 minutes and 47 balls. His hundred came in 77 minutes and 75 balls. His 150 came in another 17 balls and 18 minutes. Matt finished not out on 179 off 105 balls (the final 79 taking 30 balls), having batted 112 minutes, in an innings that, all told, featured 23 fours, nine sixes and just 27 singles.

With Cardinals finishing 258 for one, Matt’s innings was bettered by a Hornby player scoring 191, and after 519 runs were scored in the game, Hornby took the trophy. Cardinals claimed it back later in the season with a well-earned victory at Denton Oval, in which James McKay, new to the Cardinals line-up this season, registered his first hundred for the side. The mercurial Bert Walker belied his years taking two screaming diving catches in the same game, one of them swinging the game very much the Cardinals’ way.

Another highlight was Ewen Spence notching up his 10,000th run for the club with a glorious cover drive for four, a milestone acknowledged with champagne delivered to him at the crease, and by both sides.

Beyond those highlights, there were some spectacular individual moments of cricket – an Anthony Wild one hander at long on in the style of Dan Vettori in the 2015 Cricket World Cup quarter final that was the first wicket in a JK five-for that took a close game away from Hospital – Cardinals only five-for of the season. Notably, Cardinals also lost to Hospital – and the Frampton trophy with it – for the first time in several years. Cardinals also claimed that trophy back later in the season.

A season lowlight was dropping 18 catches in a narrow loss to Burnside, who went on to win the grade.

The team finished the season winning nine of 20 games, and while looking to inject some new blood next season, it won’t be short of enthusiasm or quality banter.

The team ended the season as it has in recent years with a team dinner in the President’s Suite of Addington Raceway. Team awards were:

Player of the season and winner of the Brendon Laughton Memorial Trophy – Matt Loose. Batsman of the season – Matt Loose Innings of the season – Matt Loose Bowler of the season – Julien van Dyke Spell of the season – Jagath Keersooriya Catch of the season – Bert Walker Player’s player - Ewen Spence

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT – HOSPITAL

After a turnaround in fortunes the previous season, where a few notable victories were recorded, the challenge was to see if that momentum could be sustained.

The answer to that has to be a qualified yes as despite only yielding 2 wins compared to last year’s 6, there were mitigating factors.

Before the start of the season it looked like we could offer for the second consecutive season a formidable batting line up (a perennial weakness in previous years). Players of the quality of Bruce Day, Abhaya Paudel, James Barkhuizen, Richard McKinlay and Captain Eugene Hawyn giving us strength well into the middle order. Given the solid bowling of the Barkhuizen boys and Kelum Mendis, ably supported by elder statesmen like Frank Walsh, we had the look of a balanced team particularly with the support of the old faithful of Mark Crawford, Rex Venning and Prasanna.

Unfortunately, during the first part of the season that is pretty much where the good news ended. Before a ball was bowled, we learned we had unavoidably lost the services of star batsman and last season’s player of the year Richard McKinlay for the entire first-half of the season. As if those were not big enough setbacks, a familiar demon for the Hospital team rose its ugly head in the shape of duty rosters severely impacting on Abhaya’s availability. A similar issue (plus family time) also restricted Chris Warren’s appearances to a single match. Family time was a factor for skipper Eugene as well, of which more later. Losing players of that quality was inevitably going to impact on results as the win ledger testifies. However, despite the loss of so many quality players we were anything but the easy-beats of 3-4 years ago and were very competitive in most of our matches even if we were unable to claim victory in most of them. When we were able to field something approaching our strongest eleven, it showed in the results. For those of us who have been in the Hospital team for a few years, the highlight was the win in the ‘local derby’ v the Cardinals which saw the Noel Moorhead Memorial trophy exchange hands for the first time in seven years. (OK we only held it for seven weeks, but that’s hardly the point!)

Another highlight for many, was the match v St Albans, played on . While this didn’t yield a victory, it did produce a highly competitive and exciting match, very much worthy of the venue. In a nail-biting finish it went to the final ball of the final over with St Albans batting and scores tied. Sadly for us, they (only just) managed to scramble the single run they needed. Despite the disappointment however it was a memorable day.

In the second half of the season the major issues were off the field, as mentioned above, family time was impacting on Eugene’s availability and ultimately his Captaincy and membership of the team. A short-term appointment was needed and Bruce agreed to step up to the role (since confirmed for the coming season I am delighted to add!).

On a more positive note we were able to welcome a few new faces to the team, Rahul Mukherjee and Bryan Bunz, who joined mid-season are both quality players who have very much enhanced our squad. Rahul slotted in very quickly, and I’m sure Bryan would have done so also, had he not fractured his thumb making his debut in a friendly match!

At this time of year, it is appropriate to recognise the efforts of the stand-out performers. Obvious candidate is Player of the Year James Barkhuizen, he carried the pressure of opening the batting and bowling with aplomb. Bruce was inspiring with his consistency and leadership. Kelum’s ability to take the wickets of some of the most accomplished batsmen in the grade always gave the rest of us a great lift when defending a total.

I would also like to thank a player who did not feature for us last season. Bill Nicholson has supported the Hospital team for a few years now. In view of the improvements in the team’s form in the 2017-18 season, Bill let us know at the start of the 2018-19 season that he felt he had completed his role with us and that he would be taking another role within the club for the 2018-19 season. Thank you Bill, you helped carry the Hospital team through some very dark times and your contribution should never be underestimated. All the best in your new role – but remember you will always be ‘one of us’!

SYDENHAM WOMEN

WOMEN’S TEAM REPORT

This season we entered a T20 and a youth team in the lower grade women's competitions. Both teams put pressure on the best teams in their grades but finished the season in the lower half of their competitions.

Our youth numbers this season were boosted Rosie Cruikshank, Dakoda Potter, Emma Begg, Amelia Tainui and Sophie Hickey moving through from our junior club. We also welcomed new player Sadie McLoughlin and returning player Sarah Brostow during the season. All these players made a seamless step up to senior grade cricket with contributions on the field and supporting the team by taking on umpiring and scoring responsibilities. A cricket match is very busy when playing 8 or 9 a-side, as we do in T20 and youth women grades, but both these teams had keen players willing to take on these extra roles.

This season we contracted Paula Windsor and Eden Pettigrew to coach our youth women on Wednesday evenings. They provided our players with well organised coaching sessions, maximising time on task, player engagement and, of course, fun. As our youth players are our feeder team to our premier women this investment was seen as essential for the future of women's cricket at Sydenham. We are offering similar training for the 2019/20 season.

Next season we will see a large number of players coming through from the junior club once again. We plan to keep these players together in an under 15 team and play our youth team in the under 19 grade, bolstered by some of our T20 players.

Training for 2019/20 will start early September. Any one interested in playing should contact the club.

THE NEXT GENERATION - SYDENHAM YOUTH

The Youth season, which tracks the school year, commenced in late January with two teams, The First XI and Year 10 Colts teams entering all-day 2 competitions, with three other teams 2nd Grade, Syd Bernadine Stars – Winners of the Yr 7/8 Girls Grade Beyond the Boundary April 2019 Year 9-10 and 9A entering one day competitions that commenced in early February. Playing a grade higher than last year, saw the First XI go down comprehensively in their first game, but then rally for the four remaining games they played to be on the verge of victory several times, only to see these games slip away. The opening bowlers Daniel Watt (3rd) and Archie Goodrick (6th) both featured highly on the Grade’s honours board for wickets taken in Term 1. Henry Boyd Tibbotts (10th) was the accumulated the most runs for the team in Term 1.

Metro launched a new grade, Year 10 Colts, this year with the aim to keep the top Year 9 players from 2018 together for one more year before they chase high team placements as they get old. Sydenham Youth was one of six teams in this highly competitive grade and notched up 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw across their 5 games. Ben Breitmeyer (4th) featured in the grades overall runs scored for the term, while Isaac Milne (1st), Jamie Ehau (6th) and Toby Hull (10th) featuring on the bowling hours board for the number of wickets taken.

The 2nd Grade, combined Year 9-10 and 9A teams all played afternoon cricket in Term 1. Full credit must go to both the 2nd Grade and 9-10 teams who had players who could have played in lower age grade competitions but stood up strongly to take on players several years older than them. The 9A team came up against some strong teams in the 9A grade that sees the best Year 9 players pitted against each other. The 9A’s competed well and as the term progressed took games deeper and deeper into each Saturday as they got used to accumulating runs and batting time. The Youth season reconvenes in Term 4 when the same teams will regroup.

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

The 2018/2019 season ended with the Prize Giving. It was a busy day for the committee with 5 sessions over a full day. It’s always a great way for teams to celebrate the end of the season. A big Congratulations to Darcy Rose Prasad our 2018/19 Girls Junior Player of the year & Otis Whitehead our 2018/19 Boys Junior Player of the year. Thank you to all players and families who attended and thank you to the Sydenham Bowls Club for hosting us. It has been another fantastic season for the Junior Club, we have continued to grow and develop our players, teams and coaches. Our volunteer committee put in considerable amount of hours to keep the club going, so thank you to our wonderful but small team: Allan Hickford, Kerry Constable, Maria Lankeshwar, Tracy Hurrell, Kevin McGowan and Paul Durdin.

Thank you to all the wonderful coaches and managers, the time and commitment that these volunteers put in is amazing and without their continual support, we wouldn’t be able to operate. This season NZ Cricket tasked us with some new initiatives - a major one was ensuring all our coaches and managers were suitably vetted and completed training courses relevant to the age and stage. It was a major challenge for Maria and Tracy – but thankfully we succeeded & met our target (just!).

Congratulations to the Syd Bernadine Stars Yr7/8 Girls team who won their grade and won the Tiffen Shield at their last game. They won 6/6 games after Christmas even though they were often short by a couple of players due to injuries. We are a very strong club for Girls cricket and we hope this continues.

This season we are very sad to announce that Kay will be leaving us after the AGM in August. We were able to take the time and thank Kay at the Prize Giving. Kay has been with us for 6 years and has had a positive impact on the programs and community feel of the club. This leaves the committee short and so we ask that you all consider whether you could step up and assist the committee with communication, minute taking at meetings or any other job that Kay does! Please contact Libby if you would like more information.

We have been well supported by some generous businesses this year with our Quiz night, Raffle and coaching tools. A big thank you to Business IT for supplying an IPad, tripod and software to allow Maria to do injury prevention. Giesen wines for supplying wine for our Prize Giving and The Great Journeys of New Zealand, Basic Bikes, the International Antarctic Centre and Koha Fitness for donating some amazing raffle prizes.

Enjoy your break and all the very best for those taking up winter codes. We look forward to seeing you all back for another great season.
