Praise for Turning Judaism Outward “Wonderfully written as well as intensely thought provoking, Turning Judaism Outward is the most in-depth treatment of the life of the Rebbe ever written. !e author has managed to successfully reconstruct the history of one of the most important Jewish religious leaders of the 20th century, whose life has up to now been shrouded in mystery. A compassionate, engaging biography, this magni"cent work will open up many new avenues of research.” —Dana Evan Kaplan, author, Contemporary American Judaism: Transformation and Renewal; editor, !e Cambridge Companion to American Judaism “In contrast to other recent biographies of the Rebbe, Chaim Miller has availed himself of all the relevant textual sources and archival docu- ments to recount the details of one of the more fascinating religious leaders of the twentieth century. !rough the voice of the author, even the most seemingly trivial aspect of the Rebbe’s life is teeming with interest.... I am con"dent that readers of Miller’s book will derive great pleasure and receive much knowledge from this splendid and compel- ling portrait of the Rebbe.” —Elliot R. Wolfson, Abraham Lieberman Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, New York University “Only truly great biographers have been able to accomplish what Chaim Miller has with this book... I am awed by his work, and am now even more awed than ever before by the Rebbe’s personality and prodi- gious accomplishments.” —Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President Emeritus, Orthodox Union; Editor-in-Chief, Koren-Steinsaltz Talmud “A fascinating account of the life and legacy of a spiritual master.

ב"ה Family Treasures Memento from the wedding of Efraim and Shaina Duchman 15th of Elul, 5774 • September 10, 2014 Prepared by Dovid Zaklikowski ([email protected]). The Rebbe at the wedding of chosson's grandparents, Mendel and Sara Shemtov, 10 Tamuz, 5716 (June 19th, 1956). In the center (wearing glasses), is his great-grandfather, Reb Zalman Duchman. WELCOME To our dear family and friends, At all joyous events we begin by thanking G-d for granting us life, sustaining us and enabling us to be here together. We are thrilled that you are here to share in our simcha - joyous occasion. Indeed, Jewish law enjoins the entire community to bring joy and elation to the chosson and kallah - the bride and groom. The wedding of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, took place in Warsaw in 1928. In honor of the occasion, the bride’s father, the sixth Chabad Rebbe, distributed a special teshurah, memento, to all the celebrants: a facsimile of a manuscript letter written by the first Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. Following this tradition, we are honored to present our memento: a compilation of letters Rabbi Schneur Zalman Duchman, Efraim’s paternal great-grandfather, received from the Rebbe. This is an excerpt from the forthcoming book of stories, translated into English for the first time. This memento is crowned with Mazel Tov wishes from the Rebbe to Shaina's parents and from Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka and Rebbetzin Chana, the Rebbe's mother, to her grandparents, Rabbi Asher and Nechama Heber, may they be blessed with many more happy and healthy years.

Memento of the wedding celebration of Osher & Esti Gutnick November 10, Introduction It is with immense gratitude to Hashem that we are celebrating the wedding of our dear children Osher and Esti. We would like to thank all of our family and friends for coming and making our simcha so special. As a token of appreciation we present you with this t’shurah (memento) in the tradition of the Frierdiker Rebbe who distributed a t’shurah at the Rebbe’s wedding. Part I ,ז"ל The chosson’s paternal grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Gutnick was a shliach of both the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe to Australia for a period spanning over sixty years of renowned and outstanding rabbinical leadership. During Rabbi Gutnick’s visits to the Rebbe in New York in the early lameds (1970s) he was privileged to be invited to the Rebbe’s Yom Tov meals. These meals took place on the second floor of 770, formerly the Frierdiker Rebbe’s home. The Rebbe would discuss a wide range of Jewish topics with his guests, from the deeply mystical to the profoundly technical. A small number of yeshiva students would listen to these conversations and transcribe them from memory after Yom Tov. These transcriptions were later published in a two-volume work entitled Hamelech Bimsibo.1 The dialogue therein between the Rebbe and Rabbi Gutnick has been translated2 for the first time in this t’shurah. While we cannot guarantee the preciseness of the transcript of the Rebbe’s words, it is hoped that the wide-ranging divrei Torah it contains will enlighten and stimulate all those who study it and reveal a glimpse of a unique aspect of the Rebbe’s leadership.
