Like I mentioned before, more thana great story, it's a collectionwithgreat moments and several"par-for-the-course"plot lines that didn't necessarilyhook me. GRAPHIC NOVELS IN ADVANCED ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS CLASSROOMS: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL CASE STUDY Cary Gillenwater A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Madeleine Grumet James Trier Jeff Greene Lucila Vargas Renee Hobbs © 2012 Cary Gillenwater ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CARY GILLENWATER: Graphic novels in advanced English/language arts classrooms: A phenomenological case study (Under the direction of Madeleine Grumet) This dissertation is a phenomenological case study of two 12th grade English/language arts (ELA) classrooms where teachers used graphic novels with their advanced students. The primary purpose of this case study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of using graphic novels with these students—a research area that is currently limited. Literature from a variety of disciplines was compared and contrasted with observations, interviews, questionnaires, and structured think-aloud activities for this purpose. The following questions guided the study: (1) What are the prevailing attitudes/opinions held by the ELA teachers who use graphic novels and their students about this medium? (2) What interests do the students have that connect to the phenomenon of comic book/graphic novel reading? (3) How do the teachers and the students make meaning from graphic novels? The findings generally affirmed previous scholarship that the medium of comic books/graphic novels can play a beneficial role in ELA classrooms, encouraging student involvement and ownership of texts and their visual literacy development. The findings also confirmed, however, that teachers must first conceive of literacy as more than just reading and writing phonetic texts if the use of the medium is to be more than just secondary to traditional literacy.

PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership.

This assumption is an unchallenged perception that doesn’t actually hold much water under any major scrutiny. If you add up all of Daredevil’s issues to date, the vast majority are not “noir.” Mild examination exposes Daredevil as one of the most diverse characters who has ever been written across a series of genres, from swashbuckling romance, to absurd space opera, to straight up super-heroism and, often, to crime saga.

GEEK MYTHOLOGY: NOSTALGIA IN FOUR COLORS RYAN HAMPTON he cover of Marvel Comics’ The West Coast Avengers #11 depicts Iron Man, an armored and helmeted superhero, locked in heated battle with Shockwave, an Tarmored and helmeted supervillain. Both their arms are raised, the fingers of Iron Man’s right hand intertwined with Shockwave’s left hand in a power struggle to hold the other close. Iron Man’s left hand is clenched into a fist about to hammer Shockwave’s silver face shield, while Shockwave’s right hand is extended in a karate chop formation about to strike Iron Man’s back. In the middle distance, Hawkeye, a nebulous hero clad in a purple costume and armed with bow and arrow, and Mockingbird, an acrobatic ingénue armed with an extendable steel staff, are fending off Razorfist, who has large razors for hands, and Zaran, a self-proclaimed weapons master. In the background, a crowd of frightened onlookers recedes into the distance. As an adolescent, this cover spoke to me in a way that it does not now. I had never purchased a comic book before, but something about the characters and their struggles prompted me to buy it, take it home, and devour its contents. I hold no emotional ties to the comic itself (the cover image and the story inside were long forgotten until rereading the issue very recently), except that it was the entry point for years of comic book collecting that eventually waned and died with the advent of adulthood and the speculator boom and crash of the mid-1990s.

Heroes and Superheroes: from Myth to the American Comic Book

Heroes and superheroes: from myth to the American comic book Hougaard Winterbach Faculty of Arts, Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. E-mail: [email protected] This article demonstrates that the mythological hero who appears in myth, legend and folklore has resurfaced in the twentieth century as the American comic book superhero. First, the differences between the hero and the superhero are explained. Then the characteristics of the archaic hero are discussed to show its parallels with the modern superhero. The argument is based on Joseph Campbell’s formulation of the complex pattern in the stages of the adventure of the hero. An analysis of a superhero comic book, Daredevil: Born Again, serves to show how these different stages, as distinguished by Campbell, form the basis for both the archaic and the American comic book superhero. 'n Analise van 'n superheld strokiesprent (Daredevil: Born Again) toon hoe hierdie verskillende fases, soos deur Campbell onderskei, die basis vir sowel die argaïese held as vir die Amerikaanse strokiesprent vorm. he superhero1 has been a key character in the comic book, published largely in the United States of America, since 1938.

WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOR by Bob Morrill

WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOR by Bob Morrill Bob Morrill 1 A Sunday in July Chapter 1 M.V. Owaissa Piscataqua River Portsmouth, New Hampshire “Tony, I told you I‟d do it myself,” my wife Jennifer hissed. “Okay, okay, I was only trying to help,” I whispered back. We were spectacle enough without starting an argument, especially one that I was sure to lose. I had accidentally pushed the right wheel of Jen‟s wheelchair off the gangway to the M.V. Owaissa. An excursion boat, the Owaissa was already half full of sightseers. The other half, blocked by Jen‟s wheelchair, were lined up behind us. The gangway had only a slight incline and Jen could have easily propelled herself up it. But I had insisted on pushing her— with predictable results. Rather than watching where I was wheeling her, I had been looking up at the head of the gangway, trying to catch the attention of my niece Lexie, Owaissa‟s first mate and ticket-taker. When Lexie spotted us, her broad grin triggered an involuntary reflex, and waving back, I had steered Jen‟s chair off the gangway. Only a knee-high guardrail prevented her from nose- diving onto the dock below. I wrestled with her chair. “Hold still!” “I am!” The bottom of her right wheel hung over the edge of the gangway. Yet when I pulled it up, the rail, which had saved Jen a moment ago, trapped the top of the wheel. The harder I pulled, the tighter the gangway gripped, like some stupid Chinese fingercuff.
