The 164th Anniversary Convention was scheduled to be held in Lexington, KY, July 17–21, 2020. Due to local restrictions in Lexington, regulations established by the governor of Kentucky, and additional travel and gathering restrictions all caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grand Chapter elected to hold the Convention in a limited fashion at the International Headquarters in Carmel, IN, July 17–18, 2020.

albeit in a manner that adhered to social distancing. Over a century had passed since a Convention had been held in such a small space, namely the Epsilon/WPI and Delta/RPI chapters houses in 1910 and 1911. On Saturday morning, July 18, the Con- vention formally opened in its traditional fashion. After tending to other items on the Convention agenda, the members of the 2018/2020 Grand Chapter, acting in their capacity as delegates to the 164th Anniversary Convention, elected four candidates to the Grand Chapter for four-year terms and elected an Interna- tional President and International Vice President for two-year terms each. Full Circle

BY DOUG MILLER, PAST INTERNATIONAL SECRETARY

I have often said that as a newly initiated member 33 years ago, the thought of serving on the Grand Chapter never crossed my mind. I can now say that after being elected to the Grand Chapter in 2012, I never thought I would have a “farewell” like 2020.

I always viewed serving on the Grand Chapter as an honor. I will share, for those who have never served on the board, that the time commitment is enormous due to travel, meetings, and conference calls. In addition, there was daily interaction with the other seven board members. They can quickly become your best friends—and that was true for me. We were able to have difficult discussions in the board room without personal feelings being hurt. Rarely, was an idea ever brought forth that was not altered, and made better, by the rest of the board.

As a board, we delayed a final decision about the 164th Anniversary Convention for as long as possible before calling off the Lexington, KY-based event. We kept hoping that we could bring everyone together. When that was no longer an option, we did our best to create an Martin and Miller receive Grand Chapter Service Plaques. event at the International Headquarters in Carmel, IN, that past convention attendees would recognize. We discussed the business of the Fraternity, held elections, duly installed the new board, and recognized several brothers for their efforts.

When I was installed in 2012 at the 156th Anniversary Convention, I remember my head spinning with excitement. This year’s convention seemed much slower. I am not sure if that was due to my being a veteran of eight years or the lack of pomp that normally comes from 500 people in attendance. COVID-19 surely changed what we were able to do.

I will not lie—when I realized that we would not be having a full Convention, I was disappointed that very few people would be at my last Convention as a member of the Grand Chapter. There were a lot of brothers who had been supportive of me over the years whom I wanted to personally thank. I did try to contact many of them leading up to the Convention; however, there was not enough time to reach all of them. I was very apprecia- tive to my Grand Chapter colleagues for the honors and presentations they bestowed upon me for my service. However, the highlight of the weekend was in seeing a fellow Zeta Beta/Adrian brother succeed me on the board. Zeta Beta’s newest addition to the board. During our collegiate years, Alan Copeland was one year ahead of me—he is in the class of 1989. I will never forget the moment in fall of 1987 when he asked me to be his Assistant Marshal—it was my very first leadership position in the Fraternity. As life’s journeys often come full circle, I was truly honored to assist and serve as the Installing Marshal during the installation of the 2020/2022 Grand Chapter where Alan was installed as—International Marshal.

As I look at the new Grand Chapter, I am so pleased with the brothers who have been tapped to serve. These are challenging times. In addition to all the many topics discussed in recent issues of The Rattle, we are about to see a major shift in the operations of campuses. Many closed for the fall semester and went to full virtual instruction while others worked through hybrid models. As a board, we had already planned for the next potential dip in total number of college students due to the upcoming dip in the birth rate. Combining all these challenges, it is not hard to imagine a higher education community with fewer members. How this will affect our Fraternity, it is hard to fully know. What I do know is that I have supreme confi- dence in the 2020/2022 Grand Chapter’s ability to lead the Fraternity in these challenging times.

I would like to thank the brotherhood for all the support I received over my two terms on the Grand Chapter. It is still a great time to be a Theta Chi!!!! International Secretary Miller says farewell after 8 years.

Attending this historic Convention was extremely eye-opening for me. Getting to meet my brothers who I didn’t even know were my brothers was something special. I was exposed to so much more of Theta Chi than I already knew about. I was shown a great amount of the history of Theta Chi and was taught about some of our great members of the past. WWW.THETACHI.ORG THE RATTLE /WINTER 2020 13 What Will Your Legacy Be? BY JOHN BERGHOFF, CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER 14 Theta Chi Fraternity owes its strength and success to countless brothers who have labored for its welfare since 1856. The Legacy Society of Theta Chi is a collection of men who desire to see the values and friendships of this Fraternity live on forever.

The college environment has grown more complex and has created new challenges as well as new opportunities. Theta Chi Fraternity has succeeded due to the vision and planning of our fraternal forefathers. For the next generation to succeed, we need to clear a path for them to follow. The best way is by providing financial resources for our collegiate brothers. We need to ensure the next gen- eration of Theta Chis have the same opportunity to benefit professionally and personally and de- velop the lasting friendships and memories as you.

How would you monetize your Theta Chi experience? One way is to make a future gift today and

join The Legacy Society of Theta Chi. Have questions? I’d be happy to speak with you Perhaps the easiest and most common way of making a planned gift is through your will. A at any time. You can reach me bequest in a will can take the form of a set amount of money, a percentage of an estate, a specific asset, a trust, or the naming of the Fraternity as a contingent beneficiary. at 317-848-1856 or via email at [email protected]. Sample language for including Theta Chi Fraternity in your estate might be: “I give, devise, and bequeath (state amount, asset, or percentage of the estate) to The Foundation Chapter of Theta Chi (Tax ID: 21-4014559) to be used in the area of greatest need as The Foundation Chapter Board of Directors deems appropriate.”

For more information on the direction of funds, please contact The Foundation Chapter professional staff.

Another way to leave a legacy is an endowment. An endowment is a permanent fund set aside for a special purpose. Through an endowed fund, you can support a favorite cause in perpetuity. The gift is self-renewing and can even create oppor- tunities for others to join in extending a meaningful legacy.

Here’s how an endowment fund works: n The endowed fund is established through a tax-deductible charitable gift n The principal of the endowed fund is invested and only its income used to provide the designated support n As new tax-deductible gifts are added, the endowment grows and so does the income stream n Since the principal is never invaded, the fund becomes a growing perpetual source of financial support for the program or service you’ve chosen. And the gifts continue, from year to year and even generation to generation!

During this holiday season of giving, I wanted to remind you to consider extending a Helping Hand by making a year-end gift to The Foundation Chapter. I encourage you to join the other brothers listed in this issue and to make a gift to support the current and future brothers of Theta Chi. Use the envelope provided in the center of this issue, or visit thetachi.org/give.

Fraternally,

John Berghoff Chief Development Officer

The NIC shared, “This chapter is a vocal advocate and leader for the movement on the University of Arkansas campus in addressing issues surrounding alcohol, drugs, sexual assault, and hazing across the fraternity/sorority community, not just inside their own organization. They show their commitment to doing good through enthusiastic service, campus engagement and leadership in a variety of student organizations and initiatives. The chapter has the highest fraternity grade point average on campus with a 3.33. In an impressive accomplishment for a newer group, the Kappa Zeta Chapter earned Theta Chi’s top chapter honor, while also displaying forward momentum toward more success.”

The most ill-conceived food and clothing drive EVER: A 1966 fraternity memory from Mu/California

BY DENNIS MCDANIEL (MU/CALIFORNIA 1967)

In 1966, an anthropology teaching assistant was invited to speak at our chapter about his summer experience as a civil rights volunteer in Hopedale, MS, where people lived in tents, food came from what they were able to extract from the Mississippi River, and the threat of dire physical violence, including lynching, was ever-present. Stirred by his presentation, we contacted the mayor of Hopedale, expressed the desire to have a food and clothing drive for their community, and our invitation was accepted.

What followed was perhaps the most poorly thought out, badly planned, ill-conceived food and clothing drive to ever take place: 1. Huge amounts of clothing were contributed, but we didn’t have boxes to store it; 2. Transportation companies had not been contacted, and transportation costs, which were huge, had not been considered; 3. While one mover could transport the cargo as far as , another carrier would have to be hired to pick up the cargo in Dallas to transport it to Mississippi; 4. We had virtually no money to get the cargo from Berkeley to neighboring Oakland, 20 miles away, much less to Mississippi; and 5. Even if the cargo got to Dallas, we had no place to store it, nor any idea if a mover could be hired to get it to Mississippi.

Despite these shortcomings, it came together: l Sororities and fraternities on the Berkeley campus pitched in, contributing more than 1,200 pounds of clothing, which we gathered into a pickup truck one Saturday afternoon, driving from house to house in the Berkeley hills l A moving company donated storage boxes for free. Two movers informed us they would make the deliveries at no cost; the first, taking the cargo to Dallas; the second, to the final destination in Mississippi. Their motivation was simple: they shared our vision l Two churches, one in Texas, the other in Mississippi, agreed to accept delivery of the cargo on their property until it could be picked up by a mover and be transported to the next location l All our communications were made by phone; email and computers were non-existent.

Many who volunteered their services were people whom we never met, including the hundreds of college students making donations, the truck drivers transporting the goods, and the churches that allowed this strange delivery to be deposited into their temporary custody, unaware of how large the cargo would be, how long they would have to keep it, or how some in their community might adversely react. One snag in this human network, a system constructed on trust, and the entire endeavor would have fallen apart. This was a tumultuous time period in the civil rights movement. Resistance to school integration and to black voter registration efforts was often met with deadly violence. Truckers feared making deliveries to black communities, particularly in Mississippi. Once the cargo left our fraternity house, the matter rested entirely in the hands of those we had never met. For days we didn’t hear a word, and as time lingered, we feared the outcome. Then a letter arrived from the mayor of Hopedale, dated June 3, 1966. He wrote: “We received the package on May 31. We had to make two trips to Greenville after the things. We had no idea of such large boxes, and so many nice things. Words won’t express how much the people of Hopedale appreciated these things. We want you to continue to do whatever you can for us. To know that people are thinking about us, we can press even harder. It gets very hard sometimes. Your kindness will never be forgotten. May God bless each of you.” Decades later, many of our brothers recall this experience as one of the best, most productive, and personally rewarding experiences of our time together. Our chapter has celebrated more than 100 years on the Cal Berkeley campus and has persevered in good standing with the university and with the international office without incident. Alumni continue to pass down this story to each evolu- tion of new membership, hoping the story inspires them in the same way it continues to inspire us.

Exploring the West Coast with my Thumb

BY BILL SUTER (BETA DELTA/RUTGERS 1943)

In the spring of 1946 after my Navy discharge, I bought a half fare ticket and took the train from New Jersey to San Francisco. I stayed overnight in Berkeley at the Mu Chapter House at the University of California and then rode to Fresno with a brother, then hitchhiked to Los An- geles. I stayed several nights at Beta Tau Chapter at the University of Southern California, and then rode my thumb back to Berkeley again for a night's stay. I hitch- hiked north to Portland where I stayed at their YMCA be- fore heading on to Seattle where I stayed with Alpha Rho Chapter at the University of Washington for several days. I wired home for $25, got on the freeway east and caught a ride with a teenager going home to Flint, MI, where I stayed overnight with his folks. Next day, I hitch- hiked to Pittsburgh and again stayed at a YMCA, then to Philly, where I took a train home.

At every chapter where I stayed, I was welcomed with KAPPA IOTA/U.S. Military open arms and hearts. Academy’s Temuulen Sodgerel (2020) graduated in June and is commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army.

PALMER (BETA ALPHA/UCLA 1985) Paul F. Nicholasen (1946) Eric M. Page (1973) Robert A. Potts (1951) David Holmes was a force in our lives. As our chapter adviser at Beta Alpha/ Wells W. Straub (1952) UCLA for over 30 years, he was the living embodiment of our Creed and a Arthur F. Veinott, Jr. (1956) mentor and a brother to literally hundreds of young Theta Chis. Peter R. Waldes (1973) Thomas Washburn (1952)

To many generations of Beta Alpha brothers, he was outwardly a very success- BETA TAU ful, high level executive at IBM (then-known as “Big Blue”) who remained Southern California deeply loyal and involved in Theta Chi Fraternity throughout his life. He was Gary A. Deperine (1972) Bradley Nuremberg (1955) all business and seriousness—but with understanding, a kind smile, and a gen- tle, easy laugh. Terry Krekorian, M.D. (1984) recalled, “As a pledge in fall 1980, Brother Dave cast a long BETA UPSILON shadow in his dark blue IBM suit and conservative striped tie. Whenever he walked into the chapter house at Fresno State Ivan F. Altamura (1990) 663 Gayley Avenue, everyone stood up straight. Dave led by example.” Richard P. Ramage (1966)

Neal Weichel (1984) agreed. “Because a senior successful man like Dave took time and cared, everyone cared. BETA CHI He impacted each of us.” Allegheny John C. Johannesmeyer (1964) “Brother Dave was ‘The Alumni,’’’ shared USMC Col. Robert Higbee (1983). “The sororities had their house mothers; Beta Alpha had our ‘father’: Brother Dave. He was that calm, steady, mature presence that ensured GAMMA BETA the Fraternity survived and ultimately thrived through that period and beyond. He was the personification of Furman Rhodan D. Batson (1957) the Helping Hand and ‘sturdy manhood.’” GAMMA DELTA Dave Holmes was not the brother to sit on the sunny beach drinking cold beer with you. Rather, he was the Florida Southern hard worker, always the first man to step forward to give you his Helping Hand when it was most needed. J. Robert Kingham (1955) Douglas F. Schauer (1969)

CarMax executive vice president of finance Tom Reedy (1987) remembered, “Major problems at the house GAMMA ZETA were magically fixed. I watched repairmen appear to fix plumbing issues and electrical work. An expensive Oklahoma State steel fire escape just seemed to appear out of nowhere to replace the unsafe rickety wooden stairs on the back Taylor C. Davis (2013) S. Brandon Spears (2000) of the house. Those stairs still stand today, over 40 years later. It was always Dave Holmes’ unseen hands.” GAMMA ETA Brother Holmes left the minor problems to be managed by the brothers. Past International Vice President Bill Bucknell Palmer reflected, “I was a pledge in 1980 and later the House Manager. I remember Dave saying, ‘Bill, we need John B. Allen, Jr. (1957) John W. Spencer, II (1990) the lightbulbs replaced … the stairs need to be swept …this needs to be painted …there are too many broken windows.’ Then he said to me, ‘You should run for Chapter President.’ He took me out to a steak dinner to GAMMA THETA thank me, which was a big deal to a young man on a student budget. Down through the decades, we often San Diego State Dr. Alfred G. Diboll (1952) spoke with Dave who was always available with sound advice. He listened carefully.” Glenn R. Snyder (1956) * +

James Armstrong (1988) said, “I appreciated his approach to guide a large group of college kids with a balance GAMMA IOTA of rules and leniency. He understood we all wanted to get smarter and be better men, but that we also joined a Connecticut Earl B. Geer, Jr. (1950) top fraternity to learn on our own and have fun. I can say now his approach was successful.” GAMMA KAPPA Tom Neff (1959) pointed out that Dave’s approach was consistent. “I was an active member the same years Miami (OH) Davy was there. The more I was around him the more I realized he revealed himself to be a genuine man of J. Theodore Benham (1973) John K. Blassingame (1973) integrity. If any of us best represented the principles of Theta Chi, it would be Davy. Besides that, he was so Stephen H. Daniels (1969) damned likeable! It’s disappointing that my life took a path that prevented me from seeing him more often. Jeffrey A. Fagan (1973) But I never will forget him, and the good things he did for us.” Stephen J.
