Technical Guide SPECIFIC DESIGN TECHNICAL GUIDE to the specification, installation and maintenance of Hinuera Natural Stone NATURAL. DISTINCTIVE. RESILIENT. AUGUST 2015 | VERSION 6 SH29, HINUERA | 0800 HINUERA ( 0800 446 8372) www.hinuera.co.nz INTRODUCTION AUGUST 2015, VERSION 6 This guide has been designed to assist the reader in achieving successful specification and use of Hinuera Natural Stone. This document draws upon and collates the relevant information from over 100 years of Hinuera Stone use as a building component. While Hinuera Natural Stone is used in ways that are very similar to other common building materials, the fact that it is a natural material makes it unique. This means special attention to some details when specifying and planning its use on a project. While the best knowledge has been incorporated into this guide, it is equally important to involve design and building specialists such as architects, engineers, builders, and experienced installers, together with specialist providers of other components and services, such as adhesives, sealers, and maintenance. In addition to this guide, Hinuera Natural Stone technical specialists are available to assist if more specific advice is needed. Under the Building Code, E2/AS1 Masonry (2011) is only applicable to concrete and clay bricks, stone product such as Hinuera, require ‘Specific Design’, this document is that ‘Specific Design’. Please contact Hinuera Natural Stone to ensure that the copy of this guide you are using is the latest version. HINUERA NATURAL STONE Hinuera Natural Stone is cut from a naturally occurring Ignimbrite deposit, which is a volcanic rock. As the strength and hardness of Hinuera Natural Stone varies it is categorised into five grades. These different grades are also categorised by appearance. 4.8.3 Indigenous forest on the range and plateaus The Kaimai forests were included in the National Forest Survey (NFS) of indigenous timber resources of 1946-55. The southern half of the ranges was systematically sampled in 1946-48 and the northern half sampled less intensively in 1951-52. These data were used for the compilation of forest type maps (Dale and James 1977). The northern ranges were further sampled by the Ecological Forest Survey in 1965-66, to provide data for more detailed ecological typing. Descriptions of vegetation composition and pattern on the range and plateaus are provided by Dale and James (1977), Clarkson (2002), and Burns and Smale (2002). Other vegetation maps are provided by Nicholls (1965, 1966a&b, 1967a&b, 1971a&b, 1974a, 1975). Further descriptive accounts are provided by Nicholls (1968, 1969, 1972, 1976a&b, 1978, 1983a-c, 1984, 1985a&b, 2002). Beadel (2006) provides a comprehensive overview of vegetation in the Otanewainuku Ecological District and also provides vegetation descriptions and vegetation type maps for privately-owned natural areas within the tract, such as at Te Waraiti and the Whaiti Kuranui Block. Humphreys and Tyler (1990) provide similar information for the Te Aroha Ecological District. A broad representation of indigenous forest pattern is provided in Figure 9. Tawa and kamahi (Weinmannia racemosa) with scattered emergent rimu and northern rata dominates forests on the Mamaku Plateau (Nicholls 1966, Smale et al. 1997). Rimu increases in abundance southwards across the plateau, as the contribution of coarse rhyolitic tephra to soils increased (Smale et al. 1997). Beeches (Nothofagus spp.) (beeches) are present locally on the plateau (Nicholls 1966).
